Laffey vs Rowland-Smith, 7:10 pm.
It’s the return of Hyphen, and Wak celebrates by putting out the best line-up possible:

Lopez, 2B
Shelton, DH
Gutierrez, CF
Langerhans, LF
Johjima, C
Hannahan, 3B
Cedeno, SS

Because the incidence of left handedness in general society is around 10%, does that mean that it is way harder to find a good left handed pitcher than a righty? Or is there no correlation?
Bah… With Gutie out there we need to just not have a center field wall restricting his range. 😉
I don’t think if Joe Mauer hits another 3 tonight it’s going to help us out.
starting to wonder if hyphen is a bit gassed. couple of tagged balls there
Rowland-Smith has retired 14 in a row.
You beat Sims and Blowers with that by 4 minutes. I blame all of you for the single followed by the HR.
Let’s see how long we can leave an obviously tired pitcher who is hanging every other pitch in the game.
I was regretting not starting RRS for my roto league up until 4 batters ago. Glad my intuition is right, but yet not so happy about it at the same time.
Bleagh.
my assumption has always been that they send her with a mike to get the fan info up to the booth, and maybe save it for a future promotion– but that they don’t want to put them on-air.
And Anaheim takes a 6-2 lead.
We need to start thinking about other options for a 4th or 5th starter. A lot of clubs can get by with a end of the order starter going 6 and giving up 4 runs (Moyer leads the Phils in wins doing just that), but not this team.
Wouldn’t that mean we would need a better offense?
“And Anaheim takes a 6-2 lead.”
On paper this wasn’t a good match up today for Anaheim to lose in. Plus there is the fact that the baseball gods are completley in love with the Halos right now.
And those options would be? Maybe we should go get a guy like Silva… oh wait.
4th and 5th starters are easy to find, and cheap to find.. hell, we have like 7 of them. We need to fill the holes at LF, DH, SS and C and score some runs. That’s the priority.
I am starting to get really depressed. All teams ahead of us in both the wild card and the division win today, and we are about to lose. A couple of more days like today, and Zduriencik will start the fire sale on Monday.
You should have been depressed in May when we were 21-26. To win 90 games at that point we would have had to go 69-46 (.600) the rest of the season, and as it turns out, even that likely would not have been good enough to top the Angels.
Our offense is very very bad.
Is it me or does Batista look a bit haggard out there? His hair is all messy and his facial hair not quite right. Is it Homeless Guy Pitches the 9th Inning Night?
I was even more depressed in May. BTW, let’s DFA Batista tonight.
Did Sims call that a “three-run boner” or am I just hearing things?
Might be a better alternative than Batista.
*Sigh* I’m afraid I’m moving semi-firmly into the sell camp. This team just doesn’t seem to be able to score enough runs to compete consistently. Nothing seems to be slowing down the Angels. To this point we’ve gotten pretty lucky with our negative run differential and all. Somebody talk me out of this.
Haha. Right after the home run, I was waiting for this joke. And yet I stil laughed. I even LOL’d a little.
<blockquoteDid Sims call that a “three-run boner†or am I just hearing things?
Hard to believe but I can remember when the term ‘boner’ in ordinary conversation referred to a big mistake and not an anatomical feature.
Might be a better alternative than Batista.
I think Batista was the right choice, the game was already out of reach at 4 runs, now Wak is tiring them out before tomorrow’s Saturday day game. He’s hoping they bat around twice, and none of the outfielders get a neck strain.
(sorry. Problem with the chrome edit functions)
“Is it Homeless Guy Pitches the 9th Inning Night?

”
Would be more entertaining anyways. 🙂
Is there any hope that Batista can get shelled for another 4 or 5 runs just to get it out of his system to keep himself from doing this again the next time he comes out?
Well the positives from tonight:
RRS looked great until he got tired and started leaving pitches up.
Gutie’s back.
Kelley’s looking like he’s starting to get back in the swing of things.
… hmmm. That’s about it I think.
On ESPN:
Beltre says he’s two weeks away
Perhaps about two weeks too late though. 🙁
Hard to figure how a healthy Adrian would have made any difference tonight. This was a real team effort.
I am pretty sure Jakubauskas will not start on Sunday. I sincerely hope that Olson does not get the start. Vargas Please.
We may shortly see a trade or trades involving Bedard and Washburn, so we might be seeing Jak, Vargas, and Olson in the rotation soon enough. Although give Morrow another few weeks in the minors and we might see him back up too in place of one of them. But I’d just as soon have them leave him down there until he’s truly ready or the AAA season is over.
Jakubauskas was just named to start sunday.
Wak just announced that Jak gets the start on Sunday.
Well Sunday is an almost guaranteed loss.
Just back from the game. Someone upthread said this was a real team effort, and that’s true, apart from the defense, which was generally good (other than the couple of plays up the middle in the ninth). Of course, when you give up gopher balls like RRS and Batista did, defense won’t help you much. The offense was simply crap. 1 LOB after the first inning, three room service double play balls. Yuck. The bobblehead is nice, though.
back from the game. It was nice to see the mariners still taking BP when we got in, and awesome that Branyan took some time to sign some autographs. My choice for play of the game, no not ichiro! or hannahan, how about the third base ump diving to save his life.
I gotta say I’m feeling pretty pessimistic. First off, I’m ecstatic with the job Zduriencik has done and feel he will keep us going in the right direction. However, right now the Angels are on pace for 95 wins. If they play .500 ball from here on out they end up at 90 wins. For us to get to 95 wins (which would only tie us for first) we would have to play .670 ball from here on out. Yeah. Not happening. If the Angels play .500 from here out we would have to play .580 ball. Possible . . . but really not likely. Even if the Angels are playing above their true talent level and will regress, I doubt they’d regress all the way back to .500.
To legitimately be back in the race we would need to truly upgrade the roster, not do the more lateral shift that has been suggested if we were to trade away Wash and Bedard; or hope that the Angel’s fall of a cliff and play below .500 the rest of the way.
Anyway, its been a really fun season and the team is a joy to watch, especially after last year, but I wonder if selling off a bit more than the “lateral shift” plan might leave us in a better spot next year.
I wonder if there is any market for trying to fleece a team with Aardsma? Why not try to unload an inherently overvalued commodity especially before he regresses from his tenuous hr/fb ratio.
Pennant dreams for this year died last night when Batista took the mound. This team exceeded on-field expectations, played exciting ball at times and, perhaps most importantly, got value raising play from it’s tradable inventory. Time to start preparing for 2011.
was also at the game last nite. Sat behind Bill Buckner and when that ball went thru Cedeno’s legs, my son told me he really wanted to yell “BUCKNER.” Thank goodness he didn’t.
Gotta feel bad for a guy that ends up being the punch line so much.
