Jason Churchill reports that scouts are in to see Washburn specifically tonight, at least from Philly.

You gotta send him out there.

If the defense lets Washburn down with mediocre play and a lot of runs score as a result….a real scout will know the difference between that and a pitcher just getting shelled outright.

I have a trade proposal, involving the Rays:

    Washburn/Aardsma/Morrow/Clement/Halman: to the Rays

Wade Davis/Reid Brignac/AA-pitcher Rayner Oliveros: to the Mariners

  2. Red Apple on July 28th, 2009 4:46 pm

I can’t make heads or tails of that comment.

Whew, I thought it was just me…

Washburn + Lowe > LAD for Devaris Strange-Gordon, MiLB throw-in and cash.

What would a scout see from the stands in one game, that they couldn’t get from a video archive of all of Washburn’s starts?

    #@*^ing Rally Fries!

I’d run naked in the streets if we got JJ Hardy for just about any combination of our players.

  7. johndango on July 28th, 2009 5:11 pm

To be clear: I WANT JJ Hardy to be a Mariner.

  8. jimmylauderdale on July 28th, 2009 5:14 pm

    Rickie Weeks?

Would definitely signify the end of Lopez at second.

  9. JHeino on July 28th, 2009 5:14 pm

I wonder if “rally fries” is trademarked, copyrighted, whatever. Unloading “rally fries” would, for me, be better than unloading Silva. They are not even associated with a rally, or needing a rally, how about making a sign to support your team instead of free food?

  10. Red Apple on July 28th, 2009 5:18 pm

And they’re chock full of garlic, which gives those who consume them bad breath and bad gas. Death to rally fries!

Damn, I’m loving this free-form thread.

When will Derek treat us to his rally fries post, anyway?

    Z is 24th?!?! i know it’s ESPN but this is a tragedy.

and in my previous confusing comment, i was pretty much going for would Lee/Martinez be more worth the risk of trading a Bedard load of talent than trading for Halladay

  13. candasharp on July 28th, 2009 5:59 pm

Blue Jays are saying that they will charge a premium to trade Halladay to the Yankees or Red Sox. Mariners should do the same and trade Washburn to the Angels for Brandon Wood.

Yankees are a bad fit; no middle infielders even close to the major league roster. Austin Jackson is a solid propect but why would we make an OF the ceterpiece of an acquisition. Maybe if they will trade Betances + Melancon.

Brewers seem most likely unless we work out a three way trade with the Rays where they end up with Aardsma + Clement + Halman + prospect from third team , we get Brignac and Kazmir and third team gets Washburn + Rays prospect.

Final note: even missing this year, Triunfel at 19 is still a better prospect than Liddi, Halman or Gillies. Not even close….

  14. decatur7 on July 28th, 2009 6:07 pm

If the Phillies fail to land Roy Halladay, I dream of using Washburn to pry Carlos Carrasco away from a despondent and hysterical Ruben Amaro Jr. I read in a few places (Baseball America and phuturephillies, I think) that the Phillies were down on Carrasco and saw him as a bit of a head case before the start of the year, but it seems they value him more highly now.

Also, I like Rickie Weeks a great deal (he was a 3.2 win player in 2007 and is 27 in 2010).

Also, SNELL SNELL SNELL SNELL SNELL.

  15. Mariner Optimist on July 28th, 2009 6:11 pm

Rickie Weeks for Washburn? I’ll take some of that! Even if we have to move Weeks to 3B due to his defensive woes at second. Seems like he had finally broken out this year before the wrist injury ended his season.

I think he is arb-eligible for 2 more years and in first year of arb made 2.8 million.

    You and Dave…jogging partners! 😀

JJ Hardy; Reid Brignac; Escobar; I don’t care…I want a high quality SS added to this team.

Would Pittsburgh be willing to trader Snell (whom they apparently have had enough of) for Wlad (whom the M’s have apparently had enough of)? Yeah…a Washburn trade bringing in one of the Brewers SS and then Ian Snell in a separate trade…I’d be more than a little thrilled.

I will say I agree with the posters that are happy Jack Z is the guy pulling the trigger on deals now. It’s actually made the trade deadline something that’s exciting instead of scary.

  17. Mariner Optimist on July 28th, 2009 6:31 pm

Sigh… I wish we could time travel and bring Z on board just 2 years ago and avoid our aggregate trade of

    Jones + Choo + Cabrera + Moyer + Thornton + Soriano + Sherrill + Tillman + Mickolio
    for
Erik Bedard, Horacio Ramirez, Ben Broussard, Eduardo Perez and oh the humanity.

Well, at least we let Gil Meche, Jorge Campillo and Joel Pineiro go so that we would have the money to sign Miguel Batista and Carlos Silva and extend Kenji Johjima’s contract! Our roster would look pretty pathetic if we hadn’t done that.

Hello Mariners faithful. Speaking as a Brewer fan, I am pleased to see that you are enjoying your brand new GM. Please give him our love.

Also, we are falling apart right now. Currently getting waxed by the Nats for the 2nd night in a row. With that in mind, I can’t see us trading for a rental SP like Washburn.

Hardy or Weeks I can see us giving up, but only for prospects. I take it from the amount that I see Clement’s name tossed around here that he hasn’t hit his way into your hearts. What happened to him, wasn’t he supposed to be amazing? And would he be better than Jason Kendall? Please don’t laugh, Kendall apparently has mental powers that allow him to force whoever is managing the Brewers to put him in the lineup everyday, occasionally as a leadoff hitter. We are all afraid of him.

  19. Snarf15 on July 28th, 2009 6:50 pm

Will someone tell what is so special about Ian Snell. He is like 28 or something which isn’t that young and his numbers aren’t good either. I also don’t think the M’s need a guy in the clubhouse who apparently would rather pitch in a AAA game instead of big league game. I don’t care how bad your big league team is, but you should want to be in the big leagues.

Besides that, I think we should sell Washburn and trust Z deal done, but I have a feeling that he will surprise us with something good that no one saw coming.

  20. joser on July 28th, 2009 7:36 pm

Notice how no one is suggesting trading Felix. That Geoff Baker post is borderline irresponsible

It sure would be interesting to know what, say, the Red Sox would include in a serious offer for him though, wouldn’t it? Or the Rays? Or the Dodgers?

  21. stevescheffler on July 28th, 2009 8:06 pm

Hi. Grew up in WA but live in Milwaukee now. Follow the M’s closely but I’m not totally in it. Who is considered untouchable? I would guess Felix and maybe Ichiro (for baseball and PR reasons) but do we have any hot prospects on the way?

FYI – as a Brewers fan also I think a Wash for JJ trade could be mutually beneficial, though with the Crew dropping the second straight to DC I’m kinda hoping they go seller vs. buyer.

  22. Wolfman on July 28th, 2009 8:09 pm

Mariner Optimist…no kidding. Hurts to even think about. I often wonder how Armstrong and Lincoln allowed some of those trades to happen! If I owned the team I would have asked Bavasi if he had lost his mind and to leave. Please.

ComeBacktoUSZalphabet(what a name! I have cramps just from typing it!) I wonder if the Brewers would be interested in trading a Brandon Morrow and Wlad Balentein for Hardy then? I thought the Brewers were in love with the idea of landing Jarrod Washburn. No? At least it sounds like the Yankees are getting involved in talks. Thanks to the Brewers for at least, perhaps, upping the ante a little, eh?!

One more question for you…since you’re a Brewers fan. Are you also a Packers fan? I grew up in the Midwest and am a BIG time Packers fan. Just curious.

  23. ComeBacktoUsZalphabet on July 28th, 2009 8:20 pm

Wolfman: I can’t speak for Doug Melvin, but I think the Brewers were in love with the idea of getting a healthy pitcher. With suppan going to the DL (probably) we just aren’t going to get it done this year. Washburn strikes me, personally, as Suppan v 2.0

To your second question, I’m a big packer fan. Like most other people I am incredibly sick of the constant Favre stuff. Enough already! But of course in 2 months he will be rethinking his latest retirement.

Well, Washburn has been very tough, durability-wise. He’s also a Wisconsin native, so it would be a good fit…IF the Brewers have a good OF defense. He’s a fly ball pitcher. Wold the Brewers seriously consider sending JJ Hardy or Escobar for him? I guess if they need a durable SP bad enough. We’d sure LOVE to have either of those SS!

No kidding on the Favre front! Aaron is going to be fantastic. Funniest shirt I’ve seen in a long time: “We’ll Never Forget You Brent!” All I have to say for this year: Capers/Trgovac. Best hires in the entire NFL this year. They’re going to be fun to watch…after the growing pains!

  25. Mariner Optimist on July 28th, 2009 9:19 pm

Clement pulled for pinch-hitter in the 3rd inning.

    I’m just saying…

  26. profmac on July 28th, 2009 9:46 pm

Any more rosterbation and I think we’ll need some kleenex.

Given that Washburn is an FA after this season and is a Boras client, I can’t see him giving the Brewers a hometown discount. As a result, I can’t see them thinking of him as a long term solution, at least I hope not. You guys are really in a great “sell high” spot with him right now, as long as Z. can get something done. I think Hardy is much more likely to get moved than Escobar, but at this point only for prospects.

Our illustrious host here made the right call a while back when he said the Mariners should trade Bedard and Washburn for Hardy right then. Bedard could now be sitting on the Brewers 15 day DL, and you could have your SS of the future. Only a couple more days of rampant speculation left!
