I just heard RBI Baseball Hall of Famer Todd Worrell might be involved in the Clement trade.

He’s very effective in games in which none of your players get stuck in the grand stands.

  2. TumwaterMike on July 29th, 2009 8:05 am

What I heard was that the trade was Clement and Morrow for Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy. That would make Safeco Field that “Happiest Place on Earth.”

“What I heard was that the trade was Clement and Morrow for Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy. That would make Safeco Field that “Happiest Place on Earth.”

That hilarious. I’ve never heard that one before!

Seriously, I can’t wait until the trade is announced, just so I don’t have to hear 43 versions of the exact same dumb joke told every five minutes.

  4. Carson on July 29th, 2009 8:29 am

    Stay cool.

While I’d love to put blame on trade anticipation, I didn’t sleep much last night due to the heat. Also, my girlfriend got a spider bite, so naturally, when waking up from heat I thought I had spiders on me.

    Good times in Seattle.

I’m going to miss Clement. I had some high hopes when he got drafted. Too bad…

    I feel your pain.

  7. scotje on July 29th, 2009 8:44 am

I think I had irrational expectations for Clement because he was the first player the M’s drafted once I started really following the team closely. (Read: found USSM and began my baseball re-education.)

I really do wish him the best wherever he ends up though. (As long as he goes 0-* whenever his new team is playing the M’s.)

  8. rsrobinson on July 29th, 2009 8:47 am

Since the Yankees and Phillies keep popping up in speculations about a Washburn trade, what do they have to offer that the M’s might be interested in?

  9. _David_ on July 29th, 2009 8:49 am

Pittsburgh could still be the third team that sends us stuff if we trade Clement to the AL. Could it be Clement, Morrow, Pribanic + maybe someone else for Sanchez, Wilson and Snell?

  10. galaxieboi on July 29th, 2009 8:54 am

    The re-education of scotje?

I don’t think I had unrealistic expectations for him. A slugging catcher coming out of one of the best baseball programs in the country? Yes, please. Lefty too? Oh, goodness.

Can we trade Dave Sims for silence?

  13. Carson on July 29th, 2009 9:06 am

Can we trade Dave Sims for silence?

We traded Ron Fairly to retirement for Dave Sims, and you should be thankful for that every single day.

  14. _David_ on July 29th, 2009 9:07 am

Not to get into a stupid argument about Mariners broadcasters, but really, Sims is the guy you’d get rid of?

  15. galaxieboi on July 29th, 2009 9:14 am

Sims is worlds better than say…60% of baseball TV announcers.

  16. Wells on July 29th, 2009 9:17 am

I’d ditch Sims, yeah. Blowers is decent- a bit like he’s overly sedated, but alright. Niehaus seems barely there any longer but he’s Niehaus. Rizzs is radio-only and I rarely listen to the radio. SIMS, though, SIMS, that guy just seems fake. I can’t pinpoint it. Like he gets way too excited about a single and I don’t know, I feel like he looks at the Mariners job like someone looks at a TV weather job in some nowhere town- a step in a certain direction. Maybe it’s me.

  17. Beniitec on July 29th, 2009 9:22 am

So if the deal i s with Pittsburgh, which would we rather have? Wilson or Sanchez? Which player brings the most value to the Mariners?

  18. mlathrop3 on July 29th, 2009 9:23 am

Can we trade Clement and Dave Sims for Joe Buck?

  19. jwgrandsalami on July 29th, 2009 9:24 am

Sims and Blowers are both awful. Just about every hit for the Mariners or opponent, Sims says, “That’ll sit down!” I know you’re not a baseball announcer, but how ’bout mixing it up a little bit?

And I’ve never been so pissed at him as when I was listening on the radio a couple weeks ago – M’s up 3-2 against Texas in the sixth – Sims’ call went like this – “Fly ball to right, Ichiro goes back, back. That one’ll leave the yard!!!!”

Has the man never heard of the descriptor “deep” to let the radio listeners know that the ball was hit deep? His call made it sound like a routine fly until it went out. LAME!

Blowers is too close to the players. I’m really sick of hearing him talk about “the guys”, as in “The guys aren’t going to like all those September callups – its going to be too crowded in teh clubhouse” (yes he really did say that in ’07)

And don’t get me started on those rally fries — after three years don’t you think the M’s could come up with a new gimmick?

  20. bat guano on July 29th, 2009 9:24 am

It’s you. Rizzs is by far the worst; compared to him, Sims is a breath of fresh air. If you’re watching on TV you can always turn off the sound. If you’re in the car and have to listen to the radio to follow the game, you have no choice but to listen to Rizzs. He’s moronic. I’d personally pay the rest of his contract if they’d package him off to another team with Clement, Morrow, etc.

  21. tgf on July 29th, 2009 9:26 am

Can we trade Clement and Dave Sims for Joe Buck?

Joe Buck is terrible. One of the 10 worst broadcasters in baseball, easily.

  22. bat guano on July 29th, 2009 9:27 am

Re Pirates: Sanchez is the better player, but Wilson fits the M’s needs more if we can’t find a better long term solution at shortstop.

  23. Mike Snow on July 29th, 2009 9:39 am

Not that Sims is spectacularly good (though I’m with galaxieboi, there’s a lot worse out there), but were you not able to figure out from his description of Ichiro’s retreat that this must have been a deep fly ball, even before he tells you it’s a home run?

This seems excessively generous. I miss Jack.

  25. Juicer on July 29th, 2009 9:45 am

After having the MLB package for Direct TV I have actually come to respect the on air team we have. I listened to the LA an KC feeds last week and they were a clueless bunch of ass hats. I still think I probably can listen to Vin Scully order his breakfast and be on the edge of my seat.

  26. joser on July 29th, 2009 9:46 am

Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy.

I think the Angels retained the rights to those players even as the team was released from Disney corporate bondage.

In other news, Bedard trade piece Tillman gets his debut tonight.

  27. Mariner Optimist on July 29th, 2009 9:48 am

Could someone summarize Jeff Clement’s rise and descent as a Seattle prospect for me (or point me to a writeup on this subject)? Why is he not seen as a catcher/1B/DH for Seattle, but is tradeable as a prospect?

  28. B.W.Marx on July 29th, 2009 9:50 am

    Jack Wilson to Seattle.

  29. mrw88 on July 29th, 2009 9:51 am

The Pirates are supposedly the other party in the Clement trade..

Clement and other minor leaguers for Jack Wilson and others

It looks like we just got Snell and Jack Wilson

  31. ComeBacktoUsZalphabet on July 29th, 2009 9:51 am

Jack Wilson and Ian Snell for Clement, Cedeno, Aaron Pribanic, Brett Lorin, Nathan Adcock per Dejan Kovacevic.

I saw Clement for Wilson on MLBTR. Where do you get that Snell is in the deal?

What’s interesting about today’s games is that may wind up being as hot — or even hotter — at game time here this afternoon as it will be for tonight’s Rangers-Tigers game in Arlington!

    Crazy.

What moz57 said: It’s official. Snell + Wilson for Clement, Cedeno and Clinton’s full pitching staff.

  39. NoStars on July 29th, 2009 10:38 am

A 27-year-old with an FIP of 4.57 and a 31-year-old with a wOBA of .300 is that all we got??

[If you can spell Zduriencik correctly once, you can spell it correctly the other two times]

  41. Rick L on July 29th, 2009 11:59 am

I don’t understand what Pittsburgh intends to do with Clement. Unless they have another deal lined up with an American League team, he doesn’t seem to have much value to them due to his knees and limited defensive capabilities.

  42. LewLegend on July 29th, 2009 12:08 pm

Wlad to the Reds…as per MLBTR.

  43. Marinerman1979 on July 29th, 2009 12:32 pm

I hope Z has a deal in the works for Wash. I still want a Brignac or Hardy.

  44. stevie_j13 on July 29th, 2009 12:35 pm

Clement is going to play first, with Doumit at C, although I thought the Pirates were worried that Doumit might have to move to 1B at some point.

I like this deal for the M’s, especially if Wash gets moved in the next two days. The amount of salary the M’s are getting is roughly “half of Wilson’s salary in 2010.” They get an SS and a rotation piece for 2010 and did not have to give up any top prospects for him. A rotation next year of Felix, Snell, RRS, Vargas, Morrow is not bad and they should have a bunch of money to possibly re-sign Beltre and Branyan and pick up another bat. Plus, moving Washburn should help mitigate the loss of pitching depth in this trade.

  45. mlathrop3 on July 29th, 2009 12:37 pm

Picked up a pitching prospect for Wlad.

That takes care of 1/3 of the prospects we lost to get Wilson and Snell.

  46. just a fan on July 29th, 2009 1:57 pm

Man, I hate for the M’s to trade Wash, because every time he goes out and everybody frets about him destroying his trade value, he’s pitching shutout baseball through 6 innings. But he’s just too darned valuable to somebody. Somebody (please be the Yankees!) is bound to overpay for him.

With the M’s picking up Snell, it does give them more flexibility to deal Wash — being as that, prior to today, it would have left them with Felix and (probably) RRS as the starters they could count on for the final two months. I know they’re essentially out of the race, but they still have games to play. Perhaps Vargas, too. Eventually Morrow, unless he’s going to be traded.

The more I think about the Wilson/Snell trade, the more I like it. The only thing I wouldn’t like is if Clement was a part of a deal to snag a Brignac, but maybe that was just a rumor. Seems his value was mostly because he was once a big hitter for a catcher.

  47. trtlrock on July 29th, 2009 2:11 pm

Seems like the Astros could really use a pitcher; do they have any valuable shiny objects they would be inclined to dangle for Washburn? Then again, Washburn could get walloped in that park.

I haven’t heard a peep as to whether the Astros are buyers or sellers, but they’re hot in the race — they ought to be buying.

Maybe Zduriencik could get them to throw in Towles in a deal — seems like he could be useful.
