The M’s potential free agents

DMZ · November 5, 2009 at 1:38 pm · Filed Under Mariners

For your discussion. They have to declare for FA in the next 15 days.

RP-R Miguel Batista
SP-L Erik Bedard
3B-R Adrian Beltre
1B-L Russ Branyan
OF-L Endy Chavez
DH-L Ken Griffey Jr.
DH-R Mike Sweeney
SS-R Jack Wilson

So expect extensions or FA announcements for all of those guys. Pravda doesn’t list Wilson, presumably because the M’s could pick up his option year so it’s out of his hands.

I just want to see Batista gone. All season it seemed like he was put into the game because ‘he hadnt pitched in 6 days’ or whatever. His fastball is mediocre and his control is mediocre as well.

Hmm, I didn’t know Endy was a FA this year. Any idea what’s going to happen with him? Is there any chance we resign him, or are his skills replaceable through someone else as to allow the Ms to avoid dealing with the uncertainty surrounding his injury?

  4. Liam on November 5th, 2009 2:23 pm

In addition to the uncertainty that comes with his injury, Saunders and Langerhans are suitable replacements.

  5. wabbles on November 5th, 2009 2:27 pm

OK, I was wondering about this since there’s now…101 days until pitchers and catchers report (count the days every year).
Griffey, Sweeney and Batista are or should be gone.
Bedard would have to make us a really good deal.
Bring back Beltre, Branyan and Wilson.
That just leaves Chavez…..maybe if he made us a really good deal.

  6. TranquilPsychosis on November 5th, 2009 2:27 pm

Due to his injury,Endy won’t be ready to play until somewhere around the all-star break.

Why wouldn’t a player that knows they are not staying with a team (ie. Batista) just have the paperwork ready to go at 8am this morning?

After watching this for a few years it seems like there should be a lot more announcements on a day like today. Even if the move is just to remove guys off the roster.

  8. Brandonswest on November 5th, 2009 2:50 pm

I think Bedard’s been counting the days til he’s no longer a mariner. So have I. Won’t miss him. I will miss Griff. I’d love to see him back despite his lack of production.

    Adios Batista!

I’d go for new blood at third, first, and short (Maybe Tui at third?) tho Branyan could DH if he’s not otherwise spoken for by springtime.

Forget it Chavez, let Saunders play.

  9. Captain Poopy on November 5th, 2009 2:51 pm

Speaking of free agents, I read that Putz is one – that the Mets didn’t pick up his option, or told him they wont. Man, that was a great trade.

Just out of curiosity (I realize it’s highly unlikely if it’s ever happened at all), what happens if they don’t declare in that window?

What’s the sequence wrt offering arb? Do the teams offer first and then the player decides whether to accept or file for FA? Of do teams offer arb after players file for FA.

  12. DMZ on November 5th, 2009 4:09 pm

I’ll have to write up a whole off-season timeline here soon. I’ll put that in.

w/r/t not filing for FA: you don’t have to, and I believe after his last season Tony Phillips didn’t (just to be a jerk, basically) and his team then had to cut him for a small payout. I should go look that up.

  13. Liam on November 5th, 2009 4:10 pm

What’s the sequence wrt offering arb?

Beltre filed for free agency today and the Mariners have until December 1st to offer him arbitration.

  14. diderot on November 5th, 2009 4:56 pm

I deeply hope they pick up Wilson’s option. I do not look forward to a lesser fielder with Tui on one side of him and Lopez on the other.

  15. joser on November 5th, 2009 5:10 pm

Nope, doubtful, doubtful, maybe, maybe, nope, nope, yes.

Hmm, I didn’t know Endy was a FA this year.

This seemed to surprise at least one person every week the entire season.

Good luck to Beltre, Bedard, Sweeney, Batista and Chavez.

Resign Branyan to an incentive laden deal at 4M base pay with up to 3.5M in incentives totaling 7.5M if reached with a club option for 10M in 2011?

Offer Jack Wilson 2YR/10M? You can’t replace the defense he can offer.

Griffey can come back but for half of what he got in 09. And off the bench. The reason is highly for club house leadership.

  17. lailaihei on November 5th, 2009 6:05 pm

I hope we keep Branyan as long as he signs a team-friendly deal. Other than that, Beltre if we can get a decent deal, although there may be a decent number of suitors for him. Wilson is good if we can drop the option and sign him to a 2 year deal for $13 million or so.

Other than that, I’m not interested.

  18. dsmiley on November 5th, 2009 8:21 pm

I’m generally with lailaihei on this one.

Definitely bring back Branyan and Beltre if we can get really good deals, but I suspect Beltre is gone.

Otherwise, I’m not totally sold on the others. Maybe Wilson and/or Bedard if we can get a screaming good deal. And maybe a bionic body for Bedard.

I like Griffey and Sweeney, but they aren’t the future of the Mariners and take valuable roster spots. I was a little kid who grew up adoring Griffey, but that was the past. The franchise is bigger than any one person so it’s time to let him go.

I like Endy too but not sure it’s worth the money to keep him around when he probably won’t play half of the season. Plus ACL injuries to guys who rely heavily on their legs (like an Endy-type) can be career enders. I tore my ACL in high school and it’s not pretty. Sorry Endy, I really am, but it’s too great a risk. Blame Yuni.

    Does Batista need mentioning?

Oddly enough, useless players have seemed to a bit of a theme recently. (see most recent threads)

  20. TranquilPsychosis on November 5th, 2009 8:55 pm

“seemed to be a bit of a theme”

Speaking of idiocy, it looks like I’m adding a bit of it myself the last couple of days with my typing. Somebody please shoot me before I start advocating another Griffey year.

  21. joser on November 5th, 2009 11:36 pm

I think you just need to blame it on the flashbacks. Tight pants, open shirts, frizzy hair, wide ties…. I don’t think Tom Jones is 100% with his typing either.

  22. maqman on November 6th, 2009 2:30 am

Beltre and Branyan have earned decent offers from the Ms. Branyan seems to be dealing with his back problem effectively during the off-season. Wilson is still worth a reworked offer of 2 years at about $5M per, he may well attract other offers if the Ms pass on his 2010 option. Sweeney finished the season on a strong note and is worth a contract contingent on his making the team out of spring training.

  23. Mid80sRighty on November 6th, 2009 7:24 am

I will miss Griff. I’d love to see him back despite his lack of production.

Seriously? Griffey was a childhood hero of mine too, but he didn’t just have a lack of production…he was the WORST DH in the league. If you want Mr. Tickles back bring him back as a coach or something because he makes the team worse as a player.

Still can’t believe so many people want to see Griffey back. I suppose it’s kind of like the instant replay/umpire argument. People don’t want instant replay yet bitch about calls all the time.

I can’t believe so many people want to keep Branyan. Look at his career stats! 1000 K’s in 2400 AB’s! And a sub .250 hitter. Do you really think he’d be able to hit playoff pitching?

I’m not sure that a roster is constructed with that particular worry in mind. I believe the idea is to get to the playoffs. They can fret over playoff pitching, if they’re in contention at the end of July.
