I before U, except after T

Mike Snow · November 20, 2009 at 10:07 am · Filed Under Mariners

Since there’s been some talk about comment moderation, along with proper spelling, this seems like a good opportunity to write this note. As you know, some employees of the Mariner organization have names that can be mildly difficult to spell (Zduriencik, Rizzs, etc.), but we expect that if you care enough about the Mariners to discuss them here, you should care enough to spell them correctly or use an acceptable shorthand.

The pair people have struggled with the most in the past, probably because they have a superficial similarity but the pattern is reversed (and then you have to remember which is which), are Piniella and Pineiro. Nowadays, we have another pair a bit like that who have been coming up through the system, Tuiasosopo and Triunfel. People seem to get Matt right, partly because shortening to “Tui” is an easy save, but Carlos gets butchered constantly.

It’s hard to know what the future holds for Triunfel. What position will he ultimately play? Will he recover from his injury well enough to compensate for the lost development time? How much power will he develop? Is he a future star, or a future Jose Lopez? Is all this going to happen for the Mariners, or will he become a trade chip? Whatever the outcome, though, it’s at least time to start getting his name right.

    Aye toatalley agre wit u.

My mnemonic for Triunfel is to remember out hope that he show defense, offense, and grit -s ort of the holy Trinity. And if he were god-like, he would be Triunfel.

That only works for the spelling of his name. Phonetically “triune” will lead you astray.

Oh, to be able to see the moderation queue on this one.

We still have a Maikel, and a Jharmidy hanging out there in the system amongst others that could provide some fun in the future.

What are acceptable shorthands for Zduriencik? Is Zalphabet acceptable?

  5. TumwaterMike on November 20th, 2009 11:08 am

    What’s more shorthand than “Z.”

  6. IwearMsHats on November 20th, 2009 11:09 am

    Steve Nelson is Michael Scott?

  7. Willmore2000 on November 20th, 2009 11:15 am

    Acceptable shorthand for Jack Zduriencik:

He who is not named Bill.
    That bald guy.
Jack (Don’t ask me about the mini sirloin burgers).
Sir. As in: “Thank you sir, may I have another.” (Only people named Dayton Moore and David Dombrowski may use this shorthand, though new applicants are being accepted based on merit)

  8. fiftyone on November 20th, 2009 11:18 am

It doesn’t exactly help that every member of the media who discusses prospects refers to Triunfel as TRUE-in-fell.
Also, Niehaus is on the list, right?

  9. Mike Snow on November 20th, 2009 11:24 am

Absolutely Niehaus is on the list.

is RARRR an acceptable shorthand for Radio AnnouncerR Rick Rizzs?

Wasn’t the previous guy also bald. How about the other bald guy.

  13. joser on November 20th, 2009 12:09 pm

Zduriencik isn’t that hard once you think of it as Zd – that “auto row” city by the airport – cik

Niehaus is German (house of, uh, knees?) and in German “when two vowels go walking, the second one does the talking”

How about and all-time Mariners spelling lineup?

I think you can find starting pitchers that are harder to spell — Mr Snow listed one of the notables in the intro. And Skip Jutze seems much less likely to give problems than Guillermo Quiroz.

Also, you didn’t list a manager but if you didn’t want to slot Lou in you could consider Jim Lefebvre.

Joser, it’s House of Never. Sorry for how ominous that sounds.

Joser, it’s House of Never. Sorry for how ominous that sounds.

Google likes to translate ‘nie haus’ to “never home”.

…fitting for a career like that I guess.

Don’t forget the Dave approved GMZ for Zduriencik.

I check this site on a daily basis to hear more about my beloved M’s but I find it a little offputting to suggest that, since I can’t, off the top of my head, spell Jack Pzuerencikzx’s crazy polishey name or pronounce the names of the entire roster of the High Desert Mavericks, that I don’t care. I’ve endured too many Bavasi blunders to be called apathetic, thank you very much.

    GOO MAYRINURZ!!

Niehaus is German (house of, uh, knees?) and in German “when two vowels go walking, the second one does the talking”

Actually, that’s not really true. A German “ie” is pronounced like a long German “i” (which sounds like an English “ee”). When spelling, the letter “i” in German is pronounced like the English letter “e”, which has been a neverending source of confusion for my bilingual children.

And for the translation, literally “never house” (“never home” would be “nie zu Haus”), but in all likelihood, it is a variation of “Neuhaus” (new house) which is a fairly common name (both place and person) in Germany.

  23. Mike Snow on November 20th, 2009 1:22 pm

It’s not that we expect people to know everything about High Desert. It’s that we want to have intelligent conversations, and that requires that if somebody wants to talk about the advanced Class-A team, it’s on them to get at least some basic background knowledge (that means knowing we’re not in Inland Empire anymore).

  24. putnamp on November 20th, 2009 1:27 pm

I donno who any of these guys are but I’ve always been a big fan of Grant Winstrom and Matt Hasselback

I think your pan might be a little too dead there.

  26. GarForever on November 20th, 2009 1:40 pm

Don’t forget the Dave approved GMZ for Zduriencik.

Congrats, Dave! You’re notoriety is now such that you get a definite article before your name: I like it…The Dave.

Speaking of your notoriety (“his fame is expanding faster than the known universe”?), here in Chicago the afternoon guys (Boors and Bernstein) on 670 The Score talked up (and quoted at length) your Fangraphs piece on the Cubs signing John Grabow. They instinctively felt they didn’t like it, and your piece confirmed it for them.

  27. GarForever on November 20th, 2009 1:49 pm

Oh, jeez. That should be your notoriety…ugh

Tuiasosopo still gives me fits. I keep thinking it’s double “s’s” and double “p’s” like in Mississippi.

  31. msb on November 20th, 2009 2:34 pm

I see we’ve been saved from any further struggles with Jakubauskas.

  32. fiftyone on November 20th, 2009 2:34 pm

Let’s not forget the immortal Scott Spiezio. If that’s even the correct spelling. Of course, just mentioning him might/should lead to moderation most days.

  33. wabbles on November 20th, 2009 2:49 pm

They have a valid point, especially since with that Interweb thingy, you can either look up the name or cut and paste it from somewhere.
By the way, didn’t there used to a handy spelling guide link for some of these names on the home page?

  34. SonOfZavaras on November 20th, 2009 6:04 pm

    Fiftyone,
you spelled “Spiezio” right. Trust me, I have to spell Italian-ancestry names all the time.

With “Triunfel”, I’ve never had a problem spelling it. The pronunciation, though, I’m still not sure about.

“Tree-UN-fel”? “TRY-un-fel”? I wonder which syllable gets the emphasis.

But I’ve always had foreboding that it resonates with similarity to “try and fail”.

  35. SonOfZavaras on November 20th, 2009 6:10 pm

    …unless I’m really off-base and it really is “TRUE-en-fel”.

Which wouldn’t be my number one guess, I admit.

  36. TranquilPsychosis on November 21st, 2009 7:18 pm

Don’t forget the Dave approved GMZ for Zduriencik.

I was under the impression that Derek pretty much banned GMZ from it’s inception. Now Dave is approving it? I find that to be highly doubtful.

  37. Jeff Nye on November 21st, 2009 7:31 pm

I’d say it falls more along the lines of “barely tolerated because none of the mods feel like having a three-page argument with someone who feels their civil rights are being infringed”.

  38. TranquilPsychosis on November 21st, 2009 7:40 pm

*Laughing heartily at the “civil rights” infringement.*

Jeff, you can be a rather amusing fellow from time to time.

  39. Mike Snow on November 21st, 2009 8:11 pm

Also, we have a winner! Congratulations to fwbrodie in the AFL championship game thread, the first person to get a comment moderated on account of this rule.

I don’t know, but the name sure rings a bell. I think he pretty much dug his own grave, though.
