Rainiers Game Thread

No Mariner game tonight, so we direct your attention to the Tacoma Rainiers instead. In fact, the R’s are even on TV tonight, as FSN is broadcasting the game as part of their deal with the Portland Beavers. That said, if you choose to watch the game, you should do it with the sound off, and tune into the great Mike Curto on 850 AM. Also, you should be reading his blog, which is full of good, interesting information, plus a side of Curto-humor.

Line-up for Tacoma:

Saunders, RF
Tui, LF
Hannahan, 3B
Everidge, DH
Carp, 1B
Alfonso, C
Vazquez, 2B
Woodward, SS
Carrera, CF

Chris Seddon starts for the Rainiers against Cesar Carillo. The Portland line-up isn’t that interesting – local kid Aaron Cunningham is the best prospect on that team.

Are the major-league-caliber players on the Rainiers hitting at the top of the order to get more at-bats? It seems suboptimal, especially given the struggles the first two players have faced this year.

Also, since I’m from Oregon, but an M’s fan, I’m 1000% torn on who to root for.

You definitely hit on part of it – they try to get the “prospects” more plate appearances. But they did knock Carrera down to the #9 spot because of his struggles.

It’s rather sad that I feel that lineup would put up a good game vs the Mariners… Well I wouldn’t say the game itself would be good but the matchup would be even (assuming King or Cliff aren’t on the hill for the M’s)

Mini-Mariners just like the major league ones, Saunders to 3rd with nobody out and gets stranded there.

Despite his offensive struggles so far, Saunders Has been solid on D.

  6. mike on May 3rd, 2010 7:28 pm

That was a pretty nice catch on a tough low fly in shallow right-center.

  7. Marinersmanjk on May 3rd, 2010 7:42 pm

Since whenever Saunders comes up he would be playing left, wouldn’t it be logical to give him playing time in left at AAA? Ichiro isn’t going anywhere, so putting him in right just puzzles me.

It’s funny, but there are 2 batters playing tonight for Tacoma that I would much rather have on our roster than the dead weight playing DH.

  9. mike on May 3rd, 2010 7:43 pm

Saunders plays lots of left in Tacoma. He plays all three outfield positions.

Bases loaded for Tommy Everidge…SF to tie the game.

    Occasionally he doesn’t strike out?

Wow I completely forgot about Tommy Everidge. Well theres your power DH for you. Lots of K’s, but lots of power.

How did I not know that Chris Seddon was with the Rainiers the last two years?

  14. thehemogoblin on May 3rd, 2010 8:07 pm

MSB, it’s because you weren’t living the Seddon-tary lifestyle required for such arcane knowledge.

Glad Saunders worked that walk, but he had no business swinging 3-0.

  16. SonOfZavaras on May 3rd, 2010 8:18 pm

Wicked slide on the FC, though.

There are 9 batters playing tonight (and 25) on the roster that I would prefer to Mike Sweeney.

actually, that’s a bit of an exageration, i want the 5-10 biggest upside prospects to play every day in AAA but i’d take anyone from the Tacoma bench over the right handed hitting mascot.

  18. Marinersmanjk on May 3rd, 2010 8:30 pm

    I second that.

The high-pitched screams of children in the background is going to drive me away from watching. Lordy.

  20. marc w on May 3rd, 2010 9:18 pm

What a a throw by Alfonso!

  21. marc w on May 3rd, 2010 9:22 pm

Brian Sweeney = poor man’s Scott Atchison. Question is how much poorer. I suppose Scott Atchison could be a poor man’s Sweeney, but in a better situation.

How exactly can a team look at Mike Sweeney and Mike Carp and think “We want the old guy who gets hurt all the time, has piss-poor pitch selection and can’t play in the field”?

Speaking directly to your question as phrased, because a Carp/Griffey platoon would make no sense. Speaking to the nature of your question, good fucking question.

Not a bad night for Saunders.

It really makes me wonder what goes through the mind of Zduriencik that makes him think this roster is acceptable.

The DH platoon wouldn’t be Carp/Griffey. It would be Carp/Bradley, with some Griffey thrown in when they have a bobblehead.

A damn good night for Saunders. Him putting it all together offensively, even as a ~.250 hitter with a bit of pop and some patience at the plate, would do wonders for the Major League club at this point.

  28. TumwaterMike on May 3rd, 2010 10:34 pm

I think the best catcher the M’s have is Alfonso.

  29. henryv on May 3rd, 2010 11:26 pm

Jesus, look at Luke French’s pitching line in Tacoma.

    More than 2K’s/BB…

Q: why is Hannahan at 3B? Shouldn’t he be getting time at SS?

See Dave’s post today. Also, it may be a matter of rehab progression, and they’re working their way up to the most demanding position.
