M’s Tag 1B Maguire Wiswall at #222
Fantastic name, not on the level of Gauntlett Eldemire though.
Wiswall, who goes by Mickey, is out of Boston College, a left-handed hitting first baseman. He did quite well in the Cape Cod League last year. He got a little bit of a big head about it, apparently, because he was trying to pull everything out of the gate this seasons and everyone abandoned ship on him.
Since we’re suddenly experts on horizontal vs. vertical leverage in our training programs and swings, we may be able to tweak him to the point where he’s effective and not quite so pull happy. He’s pretty much locked into first base, so that bat will have to carry him if he’s going anywhere in the league. There’s a lot of potential there, it’s just a matter of tapping into it.

Here’s some video of him. Not real big.
In the goofy names category, I’m sorry we missed out on Stetson Allie.
Saw him listed at 5’11”, which seems real short for a 1B
Casey Kotchman proves nightly we’re not.
Again, Stone has full Baseball America write-ups on our picks, including this one, making for a nice complement to Jay’s comments.
This is the first comment of this sort that I’ve seen here, but since I’m this close to tearing my hair out over this, the program was mandatory ONLY FOR MINOR LEAGUERS. Entirely volitional for major leaguers.
And, if I may, a comment on the BA commentary on Wiswall, and a theme I’m starting to see with the M’s picks. Wiswall was apparently a guy many scouts were higher on going into the year, and he struggled a bit. The M’s seem willing to bet on progression to the mean, and niftly sidestep small sample size problems. It’s been an intereting draft that way.
I apologize to your scalp, Jay. That comment was (almost) entirely in jest (as is my mien).
Though I must say, perhaps Kotchman should have been from Tennessee on this one.
It’s no big deal, joser. You’re usually on the ball, and I’m usually better at detecting a wry tone, I’ve just been seeing a lot false correlation between the training program and the performance of our major leaguer hitters and it’s rubbing me the wrong way because we’re seeing results on the minor league level.
Mickey Wiswall is sure fun to say, and SOUNDS ballplayer.
But unless you’ve got Chris Snelling-style hitting ability, a 5’11” first sacker is tough to sell on me.
However, I stand elated at Littlewood,Stanek and Paxton.
My only question is if it’s an “s” sound in his last name, or a “z” — because if it’s the latter, it SOUNDS like what you do on a long walk home after a long night of drinking.
