Game 116, Mariners at Indians

Pauley vs Carmona, 4:05 pm.

Fausto Carmona does one thing well – he gets a lot of ground balls. He doesn’t throw many strikes, though, and he’s stopped getting many strikeouts, so he’s kind of a one trick pony. This is the kind of pitcher that the M’s attempted work-the-count approach should succeed against, as Figgins, Branyan, Gutierrez, and even Saunders have the ability to get deep into counts. I’m not saying that the M’s are going to explode for double digit runs or anything, but I’m at least somewhat hopeful that they’ll be able to create some offense tonight.

Ichiro, RF
Figgins, 2B
Branyan, DH
Lopez, 3B
Gutierrez, CF
Kotchman, 1B
Moore, C
Saunders, LF
Josh Wilson, SS

So did Wak leave a note in his desk drawer saying that Lopez has to bat fourth?

  2. SODOMOJO360 on August 13th, 2010 1:43 pm

Good lord, will people get off the topic of Lopez hitting 4th or 3rd? That’s just how bad our offense is. We don’t have anyone to replace him. Would you prefer Kotch 3rd and Branyan 4th? Still gross. Guti doesn’t deserve to hit higher either. STOP THE MADNESS.

  3. TheBird on August 13th, 2010 1:55 pm

Yay, Saunders is back. Try not to run into any walls Michael.

  4. CecilFielderRules on August 13th, 2010 2:14 pm

    STOP THE MADNESS

Let’s see, Carmona is a righty. The two lists below contain Lopez, Kotchman, Saunders, and Gutierrez. I’ll let you guess which one is Lopez…

    wOBA vs. RHP
    0.257
    0.284
    0.334
    0.307

    OPS vs. RHP
    0.579
    0.666
    0.755
    0.698

Yes, he’s the worst on both. Stopping the madness would be Lopez not hitting clean-up against a right handed pitcher.

Can’t wait for the Braves to take Figgins. Ackley will step into the 2 spot very nicely and get some great experience for 2011.

  6. Westside guy on August 13th, 2010 2:53 pm

As I think I said recently – I’d rather have Lopez 4th than 3rd, if those are the only two options.

I’m looking forward to next year, though, when he’ll be batting 0th!

  7. Westside guy on August 13th, 2010 3:13 pm

Besides, it’s always possible that Zduriencik still wants to showcase Lopez because he thinks he might be able to get some value back as part of a waiv.. HA!HA!HA!HA!HA! I’m sorry, I really tried but I couldn’t keep a straight face through the whole joke.

  8. Chris_From_Bothell on August 13th, 2010 3:19 pm

Yay, neither Lopez nor Kotchman are batting 3rd!
Boo, Lopez is hitting cleanup. No I don’t have a better idea either… just… argh.
Boo, Kotchman is there at all. Free Smoak!

And here’s hoping Condor does well tonight, nice to see him back.

  9. robbbbbb on August 13th, 2010 3:42 pm

I, too, want to see Smoak and Ackley get their shots. However, I don’t want to see them called up too soon.

    (1) I remember the previous regime’s aggressive promotion schedule, and how that hurt some of our young talent. Don’t you?

    (2) That starts their service clock. If Smoak stays in AAA for the rest of the season, it probably buys the M’s another year of arbitration on Super Two status. Same for Ackley.

Let’s wait until next year on those guys. I want to see them when they’re ready to go.

Shannon Drayer was discussing the dismissal of Wak on the radio the day he got canned and mentioned something curious. I’m paraphrasing, but she essentially said that leadership stability was one of the concerns Justin Smoak had when he arrived in Seattle.

While it might have been cool to see him every day at the big league level, I agree with her that the last thing we needed was a rookie with great promise being distracted and disheartened by a dramatic clubhouse situation.

As it stands, he can be happy about Brown’s promotion, work on his game and play for a very competitive club. There is a good chance of a playoff run for the Rainiers, right? Why not give the kids a sweet taste of the postseason, rather than extra servings of castor oil in the bigs?

  11. EthanN on August 13th, 2010 4:24 pm

    That a boy Pauley.

  12. cmonseattle on August 13th, 2010 5:04 pm

Wow Tinsley… why weren’t you told to leave with Wak.

  13. EthanN on August 13th, 2010 5:11 pm

I’ve been wondering that for awhile. Tinsley has actually probably been the worst coach on the team this year, yet he still has his job. Hmm

  14. lalo on August 13th, 2010 5:36 pm

    Tinsley…

  15. Des71 on August 13th, 2010 5:37 pm

Two bobbles, and two great throws to nail Mariner runners at home. Lee Tinsley is pressing.

  16. Pilate on August 13th, 2010 5:38 pm

That’s twice in one game. Lee Tinsley is not only the third base coach, he’s the base running and outfield coach. Big surprise, huh?

  17. Westside guy on August 13th, 2010 5:47 pm

Which owners daughter is Tinsely married to again?

  18. TwoOutsWhatsNew on August 13th, 2010 5:53 pm

To go further with stopping the madness, I couldn’t believe how Drayer and the other guy on the pre-game show were going on about how Tui would get a shot if Figgins is traded, and how Brown might be able to help him become a better Major Leaguer because he coached him in Tacoma and saw him as a very productive player there. I guess they don’t see the obvious problem is that he might be a good Minor League player, but not a Major League caliber one.

  19. msfanmike on August 13th, 2010 6:09 pm

Glad to see Tinsley has joined the 2010 fray.
We need some replacement level base coaches in 2011. The only reason Tinsley and Brumley were retained (probably) is because they know the signs. Why else would they still be around? Kotchman was out by 40′ and Lopez was out sometime shortly after he rounded 2nd base and picked up the sign to go homeward.

    Good God!

Ichiro … hey, take two juicy fastballs down the middle (with a man on 2nd and no outs) and then swing at some slop in the dirt that crosses the other batters box.

    Atta Boy!

This team has literally surrendered 3 outs that could have easily led to runs tonight. Pauley can’t get his first MLB win on this team. White will find a way to blow it. If not him – someone else will. I have to admit (as blasphemous as it sounds) that White looks a bit better since he returned to that high overhand delivery – as he attempts to get more down angle on his pitches. Then again, he is facing Cleveland.

  20. PouxBear on August 13th, 2010 6:12 pm

    1-2-3 inning for White…

  21. Pilate on August 13th, 2010 6:14 pm

“Which owners daughter is Tinsely married to again?”

That’s exactly how we ended up with Bobby Ayala. He was the husband of Lou Piniella’s second cousin.

  22. msfanmike on August 13th, 2010 6:17 pm

I’ve been wondering that for awhile. Tinsley has actually probably been the worst coach on the team this year, yet he still has his job. Hmm

Ethan, I think you are forgetting that Brumley was the 3B coach making all the gaffes earlier this season. Tinsley has only “boned” a few decisions … with 2 glaring, unfortunate ass flares coming today.

I think the Mariners already have enough of a delicate balance to navigate in regard to race relation overture issues that are starting to surface in brevity (not here yet) with Griffey, Bradley and Figgins. They don’t need another one – if that is what you are inferring with the “hmmmmm” query. Personally, I think it is probably nothing more than happenstance.

  23. EthanN on August 13th, 2010 6:18 pm

Lol Cleveland is still the predicted winner

  24. EthanN on August 13th, 2010 6:19 pm

@MsfanMike ah thanks for the correction man. My excuse for the gaff is they both end in “ley” haha

  25. msfanmike on August 13th, 2010 6:22 pm

@MsfanMike ah thanks for the correction man. My excuse for the gaff is they both end in “ley” haha

That’s actually a good enough reason. The best thing for you to do (and I think you are the young dude who lives in Anaheim correct?) is to forget as much of the 2010 season as you can and keep “ley” as your path forward motto for the next 10 years or so … but, carefully son.

  26. EthanN on August 13th, 2010 6:26 pm

I will take this knowledge which you have bestowed upon me and use it wisely. Although I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to forget a train wreck

  27. PouxBear on August 13th, 2010 6:32 pm

That’s the worst Ichiro at-bat I’ve seen since, well his last at bat.

  28. EthanN on August 13th, 2010 6:36 pm

Eh, he’s batting above .300 on a team that can’t hit the ball to save their lives. I’ll allow it.

  29. Breadbaker on August 13th, 2010 6:37 pm

David Aardsma is moving away from the mean again.

  30. littlesongs on August 13th, 2010 6:41 pm

    “High fives and knuckle sandwiches…”

    God, I love Dave Niehaus.

  31. msfanmike on August 13th, 2010 6:56 pm

    Ditto.

Someone must have translated the Baseball Between the Numbers chapter on “clutch” into Japanese. Nice clutch (err, situational) hitting Ich.

Good for Pauley on career win #1, but blech! on the win-ometer scale.

  32. msfanmike on August 13th, 2010 7:11 pm

If you could put together one team, but it had to be comprised of the best players from the Mariners, Indians, Royals and Orioles … could you assemble a team with a legitimate shot at winning any division in the AL?

You could come up with some good outfielders, but can you create a competitive team of infielders, pitchers and viable catchers:

    Outfield options:

    Ichiro
    Choo
    Jones
    DeJesus
    Guti
    Markakis

  33. DC on August 13th, 2010 8:12 pm

I’d sure like to have the Royals’ talent moving up through the minors though.

  34. groundzero55 on August 13th, 2010 8:14 pm

You could easily create a very strong team with players from all of those four. Not just outfielders.

  35. scott19 on August 13th, 2010 8:25 pm

Two bobbles, and two great throws to nail Mariner runners at home. Lee Tinsley is pressing.

And yet, Z kept him and Brumley around while dumping Rick Adair…go figure.

That’s exactly how we ended up with Bobby Ayala. He was the husband of Lou Piniella’s second cousin.

And also how the M’s lost David Arias Ortiz…because they seemed to have a pressing need to acquire Dave Hollins just so he could play for his cousin Lou.

Still in all, a nice performance for Mr. Pauley tonight. In a season of scant, one must take whatever scraps are available.

Okay, this is eery. I know there are things you have to do with scheduling ads on various stations, but I just saw on the Cooking Channel the Z/Wak/Franklin ad. That is just strange.

Almost as strange as firing your Japanese-American manager on Japanese-American Appreciation Day?

Hey I just thought of another great ad. Wak and Zduriencik are walking through the clubhouse, where Junior is snoring away in his Lay-Z-Boy. Wak goes “Boy, that guy can sure relax in the clubhouse!”, to which Z answers “That’s why we signed him”. Then they’d cut back to Z who’d have a quizzical expression on his face.

And maybe there’d be a short cameo with Larry LaRue – he’d quietly raise up from behind the chair wearing a fedora that has one of those “press” tags poking out of the band.

  38. olymsfan on August 13th, 2010 9:22 pm

I have heard rumors of Cora as a possible manager. I know everyone wants a separation from ’95, including me. But I have heard great things from him as a bench coach.

  39. Breadbaker on August 13th, 2010 9:35 pm

And with a photographer with one of those old-fashioned flash cameras. Great idea, let’s make it so.

  40. samregens on August 13th, 2010 9:54 pm

My trust in Z is so low that I think, in order to try to make it seem that the 2010 disaster was mainly Wak’s fault instead of Z’s own terrible calls in assembling this sucky roster, he fired Wak after the division leading Rangers series (where they managed a series win by the way, it was some strange timing in the middle of a homestand) and where the M’s had just come off facing a string of mostly strong teams, and before this extremely easy stretch of A’s, Indians, and Orioles.

Yeah sure Z, nice calculation, we are completely sold that it was all Wak’s fault and not yours.

    Not.

Glad to see the announcers go ahead and interview Branyan real quick postgame instead of that nit Mueller that usually does it. Both she and The Mentink should find other gigs.
