Game 119, Mariners at Orioles

Fister vs Bergesen, 4:05 pm.

Usually, when the Mariners travel to Baltimore, I take the opportunity to complain about MLB’s archaic blackout rules that prevent me from watching any Orioles game on MLB.TV, despite living seven hours and two states away. This time, though, I have to admit that it doesn’t bother me much – the odds of me choosing to watch these next three games in lieu of spending time with my wife were about the same as the M’s scoring 20 runs tonight.

Ichiro, RF
Figgins, 2B
Branyan, DH
Lopez, 3B
Gutierrez, CF
Kotchman, 1B
Moore, C
Saunders, LF

Meanwhile, the two losing-est teams in the AL can’t even decide which one is the losing-er-est in a reasonable amount of time.

For such closely matched teams, 54 outs is too small a sample size to answer the question.

    Spot on Westside guy.

It’s pretty interesting to read someone trashing Ichiro for being selfish for trying to get a bunt hit down with a man on 3rd.

We know that Ichiro has a pretty high success (most likely more than 1 times out of 3) for getting bunt hits down and otherwise is a .333 career hitter (best in the majors, by the way, but still 1/3). He also had a great hard hit shot with the bases loaded get grabbed for an out yesterday in a tremendous play, by the way. I don’t blame him for mixing things up.

Ichi did not have a great day (maybe he’s being selfish and this is why he didn’t get more hits) and to me it looked like his bunt for a hit didn’t go as as fast or as far as he wanted it to.
It’s funny how the person trashing him assumes that the result, i.e. the placement and speed of the bunt, is exactly what Ichiro was intending to do (I guess he would be a 1.000 hitter then, right?), and on that assumption tries to trash him for being selfish. And I never knew that trying to get hits rather than making outs was selfish.
    Oh, wait a minute…

Nice to see Moore have a great game.

And with Bard the day before yesterday, wow, the catchers are on fire.

Westside….I don’t care what Adam Jones does!!! Besides, that was Felix Pie….thanks for playing!

And there wasn’t 2 outs!!! Why would you even compare the 2 situations? Unless you are a glutton for punishment and are both a Mariners fan and Orioles.

Nice dart. You are wrong as hell, but “good one!” It was Adam Jones that bunted the ball.

Thanks for playing? You sure showed Westside Guy who is boss and good job following-up your earlier post. Way to stick up for yourself! Now go pin a rose to your ass.

Sorry Mini G. Westside was correct – game recap

BALTIMORE — Nick Markakis led off the 11th inning with a double and scored on a two-out bunt by Adam Jones, giving the Baltimore Orioles a 5-4 comeback win over the Seattle Mariners on Monday night.

The victory improved Baltimore’s record under Buck Showalter to 10-4. The Orioles had lost two straight, their first skid since Showalter made his debut on Aug. 2.

Markakis doubled off Sean White (0-1) and advanced on a groundout by Ty Wigginton. After Corey Patterson grounded out against a drawn-in infield, Jones dropped a bunt down the third-base line that Jose Lopez failed to snare with his bare hand as Markakis sprinted home.

My bad! Nonetheless…..who cares what the Orioles do. Ichiro is still selfish! And that was a crappy play with 2 outs and a runner on 3rd.

And yes pinning a rose on my ass did hurt a bit!! 🙂

  9. Westside guy on August 16th, 2010 9:28 pm

Well, I didn’t expect the bunt obviously – but with Jones up there I figured it was likely over nonetheless.

He seemed to be taking a page from the Saunders playbook… except he bunted successfully. 😉

(I like Saunders but the attempted bunts drive me nuts)

I guess it’s a hard decision of who wins the gas can award for tonight… I’d have to say that Aardsma and White tied for the distinction. Brown Brown, Z, Howie, Chuck, et. al. better figure things out really quick with these basket cases if we have a prayer of competing any time this decade.

WTF has happened to Guti? Jesus, he has looked bad at the plate for a LONG time. And I don’t know if they keep a stat for swings at pitches out of the strike zone, but the M’s tonight set the high standard.

    Oh. And I hate Figgins.

Woot, walk off homer for Ackley.

Another I hate Ichiro moment: Bunting with 2 outs and a runner(Saunders) on 3b. It wasn’t like he laid a drag down….He bunted towards 3b and even if he was safe, Saunders wouldn’t score.
He is so selfish, and I can’t stand that about him.

Adam Jones bunted for a hit with 2 outs, runner on third, exactly the same as Ichiro. It was even the same “bunted towards 3b”.

Some people will lie or post any crap to try to help their agenda of bashing Ichiro. Jeez, embarrassing.

ESPN’s PbP account shows this as the final play in the Baltimore ninth:

B Roberts grounded out to first.

    Is this correct?

    Is this correct?

    No.

Ty Wigginton flied out to center (Fly).

See the play by play on Fangraphs.

The last play in the Baltimore 10th was
Brian Roberts grounded out to first (Grounder).

A sweep would be great, either way.

I like watching the Mariners win, and I hate the Orioles (I don’t know why, but I always have), so an M’s sweep would be terrific.

But, the Orioles are also the owners of the worst record in baseball, and they’re exactly the team we need to catch to improve our draft position.
