Vargas vs Niemann, 4:10 pm.

Jeff Niemann has been awful since coming off the DL a month ago, giving up more runs than innings pitched. I’m guessing that changes tonight.

Ichiro, RF
Figgins, 2B
Lopez, DH
Gutierrez, CF
Smoak, 1B
Moore, C
Saunders, LF
Tuiasosopo, 3B
Josh Wilson, SS

Does Saunders finish the year above the Mendoza line? Maybe not. And to think his “breakout” is one of the highlights of the year.

Guess the Halman/Mangini experiment is over? 🙂

I’d rather see Langerhans at DH… but I’ve come to accept(*) that nothing is going to change this year.

(*) Acceptance is only provisional. The author reserves the right to rescind this acceptance at any time. Author also reserves the right to continue referring to Daren Brown as “clueless”, “unoriginal, and/or “an idiot”; and to refer to Jose Lopez as “Baby Steps” and/or “6-4-3”.

Dang so they play the kids at a game I can’t see and now on a Friday night on a game I can see it’s the same old crap. Yay….

For what it’s worth: It probably helped that Sabathia got roughed up by the Rays – but Buster Olney just listed Felix as #1 in the Cy Young race. So it would seem there’s hope that the more traditionally-minded voters will still come around…

I realize Olney isn’t a voter – at least I don’t believe he is, since he’s not a city sportswriter. But he does seem to have some clout, whatever you may think of him.

Also, I see DB continues to believe that J-Lo is somehow the Second Coming of Reggie Jackson and therefore is still batting him third…

Fun stats: We all know that the M’S BA of .234 on the season is bad, but is it epically bad? The last time an AL franchise had a team BA this bad was Toronto in 1981, but that was the strike-shortened season so it deserves an asterisk. The most recent sub-.234 full season was the Rangers in 1972. Four AL teams, Boston, Cleveland, Kansas City, and Tampa Bay have NEVER had a sub-.234 season, and that goes back to 1901 for the Red Sox and the Indians. Honorable mention goes to the Tigers (1904 was their last sub-.234 season and to the Twins, then the Washington Senators, who last recorded M’s ineptitude in 1909. We are witnessing more than once in a generation futility and more like once in a lifetime. Of course, the 2011 M’s may be up to the challenge.

Even the 1962 Mets hit .240 as a team — and they were wretchedly horrible!

  9. scott19 on September 24th, 2010 5:12 pm

And here’s another (not-so) fun fact: Based on the team stats heading into today, if you took Ichiro’s 200 hits and 635 plate appearances out of the equation, the rest of the lineup is 986-for-4,977 — a .198 average!!

    One…Ninety…Freaking…Eight!!!

    Talk about historically bad! 😮

    Hope-Lez in full contract drive.
Mariners in full draft place dropping drive.

Cortes…a prospect that might actually pan-out!

  12. scott19 on September 24th, 2010 6:45 pm

Hmmm…Rays fans must be sensing an imminent victory — I’m hearing the sound of vuvuzelas blaring in the background! 🙂

    10 comments? Really?

    This means two things…

1 – More people use twitter now. Many more people. Including Dave and Jeff (LL). They will post to twitter far more often than they post/reply in their own threads (Dave at least).

2 – It’s Friday… M’s are bad again… Lookout Landing is gaining with the drinking crowd?

    Methinks yes to both.

Nah, I’m just killing time until 8.30…when I’ll head over to the bar to watch the Grand Final of Australian Football. 🙂

Varvaro and Cortes look good, bye bye Sean White, Olson and Seddon

Of course, whenever I see Rafael Soriano excel someplace else, I always have to thank Buffalo Bill for the one craptastic year of Ho-Ram which he subjected us to.

Sean White – We will all miss you, but not as much as you missed the plate. Fare thee well.

So has this season been just a crazy roller coaster ride or what? I’ll miss the Mariners wacky hijinks during the offseason.

So has this season been just a crazy roller coaster ride or what?

Well, except for the fact that the offense this year has had about all the thrilling g-force of a golf ball rolling gently down a miniature golf straightaway, that is. 🙂

Doesn’t the phrase “roller coaster ride” imply that there were some ups? Cuz I don’t remember any…

Well, I’m only one of many, but…

Unfortunately I’m back to my normal work schedule, which doesn’t mesh with these east coast start times very well – so my participation has been pretty limited.

Well, there was that one homestand back in April where they were actually 7-2…though that feels like it was about a hundred years ago now at this point.
