Cactus League Game 9, M’s at A’s

Jay Yencich · March 7, 2011 at 11:57 am · Filed Under Game Threads, Mariners

RF Ichiro!
3B Figgins
CF Gutierrez
1B Carp
2B Jack Wilson
SS Ryan
LF Saunders
C Gimenez
DH Mangini

P Felix! and then Pineda!

If Twitter isn’t lying to us, then it seems as though the game won’t be on radio after all. I’m going to tune in anyway and be horribly disappointed.

Jack Wilson is back in the lineup. That’s something.

It’s true. No radio. Felix’s first spring start and there’s no radio in Seattle. Awesome.

MLB.com’s Gameday Audio has the As feed available.

No radio AND no pitch fx, as the M’s are playing at Oakland’s Phoenix facility.

I’m sure KIRO’s less than pleased, as I’m sure they finalized their broadcast schedule quite a while ago.

Felix and his Hernanditos take on an Oakland team that seems to feature hulking 1B prospect Chris Carter in LF. If you thought putting Mike Carp in LF yesterday was weird, this is much, much stranger. This is closer to putting Ryan Howard in LF. SS prospect Grant Green’s also starting for Oakland, which means I’m mad again that this isn’t on KIRO/pitch fx.

Pitchers expected in this game for the M’s include the dueling lefties Aaron Laffey and Cesar Jimenez as well as dueling righties Josh Lueke, Denny Bautista and Justin Miller.

Done. Was looking back on my last gameday thread, forgetting you put up the one on Sunday.

lesch2k – Oh, I’ve got the mlb at bat app. I’d still rather have an M’s feed to listen to, and then there’s the fact that not everyone has an iPhone. I don’t want to speak for people, but I don’t think anyone would’ve minded if yesterday’s game wasn’t broadcast. This one’s a bit tougher to take.

Felix/Pineda scheduled to go 3IP each.

Matt Carson grounds out, pitcher Felix Hernandez to second baseman Jack Wilson to first baseman Mike Carp. One out.

That just has all kinds of “huh?” factors.

Just tell me it wasn’t hit off his arm or plant leg. Or, I guess, head and various other important parts.

it was lightly deflected by Felix at best. the Oakland (non-Frick award winning) announcers weren’t even sure if it was deflected.

M’s lead 2-0 on an RBI double by Gimenez and an RBI single from Ichiro.

Felix is yielding some hard hit balls today, but this A’s line-up doesn’t seem to be able to make him pay.
Also, did a desert-fever-addled Conor Jackson just steal a base without a throw?

  11. marc w on March 7th, 2011 1:04 pm

Kouzmanoff scores Jackson w/ a single. Damn.

  12. marc w on March 7th, 2011 1:09 pm

Felix replaced by Justin Miller after 2 2/3 IP, 2 men on.

This wasn’t a walk in the park for Felix, a fact which will be invested with all sorts of significance by some fans.

  13. groundzero55 on March 7th, 2011 1:10 pm

Was Felix on a pitch count? Seems strange pulling him before the inning was over.

  14. marc w on March 7th, 2011 1:13 pm

Yes, he was on a pitch count.

  15. kimalanus on March 7th, 2011 1:15 pm

According to Larry Stone via the Lookout Landing game thread, Felix threw 53 pitches and 20 of them were not strikes. He was a bit wild… Pulled after a four pitch walk. Maybe I shouldn’t say wild, just not his usual pinpoint control.

Joey Devine walked one, hit a batter, then walked another two in a row to plate a run for the M’s. Devine missed ’09 and ’10 rehabbing. Nope, not quite ready.

score board change (or announcer change). the hbp is a walk as well.

  18. marc w on March 7th, 2011 1:37 pm

Pineda in…and walks his 2nd hitter. This hasn’t quite gone according to script.

  19. marc w on March 7th, 2011 1:38 pm

No, gameday had it as a walk, but I’m going to trust the announcer who is of course looking at it and said it was a HBP several times (including wrapping up Devine’s pitching line). Not sure why Gameday had it as a walk.

Fautino de los Santos was a heralded prospect with the White Sox a few years ago who moved to Oakland in the Nick Swisher deal (along with Gio Gonzalez). Then he had TJ (in 2008) and while he’s still getting lots of Ks, he’s giving up a ton of hits. It’s always nice when a player’s statistical tendencies play out in a one-inning microcosm of their career.

This is a welcome Shannon Drayer tweet:
“Scouts say that Felix was sitting 92-94 with the fb while Pineda was 95-98.”

Now pitching for the A’s is Neil Wagner, a guy that seems to have sprouted fully formed from the head of JY. A painter and poetry fanatic, his blog for mlb used to discuss art museums before casually mentioning that he pitched a couple of times and did OK, I guess.
Everyone has favorite prospects, but I’m rooting for Wagner more than any other non-M’s minor leaguer.

  23. Jay Yencich on March 7th, 2011 2:55 pm

I was so excited when I saw that name come up! Neil Wagner! I wish he wasn’t pitching against us 🙁

  24. marc w on March 7th, 2011 2:58 pm

He’s not pitching against “us”, he’s pitching against Sean Kazmar and Steve Baron. It’s March 7th.

  25. Jay Yencich on March 7th, 2011 3:15 pm

I prefer to think of the minor leaguers as extensions of us. Except maybe Kazmar. He could be gone by April.

  26. spankystout on March 7th, 2011 3:17 pm

Anyone know if Pineda threw his change-up today?

  27. Nate on March 7th, 2011 3:58 pm

I don’t know if he had much of a chance. 6 of the 9 batters he faced put the first pitch into play. the other three were the 2 BB’s and 1 K. Someone must have scouted the “first pitch fastball” or something.

  28. marc w on March 7th, 2011 4:22 pm

No, I don’t know – the strikeout came on an offspeed pitch of some sort.
