Game 40, Mariners At Indians
Bedard vs White, 10:05 am.
The M’s really need to win one 10-3 pretty soon so that we can all stop having ninth inning anxiety. What a lousy week.
Brandon League is getting the day off today, having thrown (poorly) four times in the last five days, but Wedge says he’s still the M’s closer. It’s the right call – recent struggles or not, he’s the best reliever in the bullpen.
Dan Cortes goes back to Tacoma to make room for new addition Jeff Gray. Also, note the #4 spot in the line-up today – hallelujah.
Ichiro, RF
Figgins, 3B
Smoak, 1B
Cust, DH
Olivo, C
Peguero, LF
Ryan, SS
Saunders, CF
Wilson, 2B

How many closer changes do you think begin with “He’s still our closer“?
Why is Wedge keeping P-turd in the lineup, I want to see more of the other Wilson.
Nice to see a fairly sane lineup. Really glad Wedge is now putting Smoak #3. It’s where he should’ve been all along. And while Cust isn’t the ideal #4, that’s a hell of a lot better than Olivo(!). I can’t bring myself to watch or listen to the game today, though. I need to detach for awhile.
Charlie Foxtrot.
This team is sad. More has-beens and never-will-be’s, playing against good players we traded away for relievers we don’t have any more.
Hopefully this rain delay ends in 2013.
Oh come on, I woke up before noon on a Saturday for a rain delay? Awesome.
“hopefully this rain delay ends in 2013”
I wish.
Uh, don’t they look at a weather forecast before the game? Why start the game if you know rain is coming? I can’t recall a seeing a rain delay in the bottom of the first.
Really, a flattering nickname already? Peguero is in the lineup because they are facing a right handed pitcher. Wedge is sticking to his age old plan (of less than one week) and platooning Wilson and Peguero. They have to see what they have in both players and both players will get their chances. Yesterday, Peguero provided a mini-highlight real of the best and worst of what he has to offer. He will improve. Maybe not as much defensively as offensively, but he will certainly improve.
Good question. Bad forecasting? Bad analysis of data? They have plenty of time today to get the game in and they will do everything they can to make it happen, but yeah … you ask a good question – and I can’t recall seeing a rain delay in the bottom of the 1st inning, either.
What other team’s clean-up hitter has 0 homeruns?
Amen × 10,000.
If Milton was playing he wouldnt have made that play either, and he wouldn’t have homered.
What are the chances that Bedard goes out after the rain delay is over?
I assume this delay will soon be long enough that we will have seen the last of Bedard for today. Not that he looked all that sharp, but I hate to see us have to run the bullpen out there for 7-1/3 (sic) today, and then have a couple of our better bullpen arms unavailable for the next few days.
Based on the time, the weather and his injuries,i´d say 0.001%
By all means, let’s brand Peguero as a lost cause based on a very small sample size and a couple bad plays.
There seems to be a lot of crossover lately between USS Mariner comment threads and those on the Seattle Times website.
It may be immaterial re: Bedard; I just checked the weather map and forecast for Cleveland, and “I don’t think the heavy stuff will come down for a while” 🙂 I’ll be surprised if this doesn’t get washed out, which is fine by me; I think the team and its fans could all use a breather.
Go go RAIN!
Go go RAIN!
I agree with GarForever – I could certainly use a break. 😉
BTW according to Stone – Guti’s going to attempt going nine innings in center for the Rainiers today.
This is why they don’t start games if the forecast says rain is coming soon, so that you don’t lose the starters after an inning or two. That’s why it was strange that they started this game.
I’m with Westside: I think it’s a little early to throw one’s hands up with Peguero. I doubt he’ll ever be a superstar, but at this rate I’d settle for a +2 WAR from any OF not named Ichiro. Before we blame him for last night’s game, let’s not forget that those doubles were still hammered; had they been 20 feet to either side, we wouldn’t even be talking about Peguero in the context of last night’s, *ahem* unfortunate turn of events.
And where does this Dustin Ackley guy get off?!?! He’s not even good enough to make the team! CUT HIM! Better yet, trade him for a closer, am I right???
If we end up playing a double-header tomorrow, is there any reason that Bedard can’t start one of those games? He warmed up today and then he threw approx 15-20 pitches … I see no reason why he couldn’t start again tomorrow. He could probably warm up and throw again today, but that would be a rather “extreme” decision in today’s pitching decision world. Re: Bedard, it’s almost better if they do call the game and play 2 tomorrow.
Has anybody noticed what “The Fish” has been doing in AAA lately? .295/.360/.541 … with 7 dingers. He had a horrible start, but has been hotter than hell lately.
Ackley, yes – he stinks. He probably deserves a disparaging nickname by now too. Maybe one of the Seattle Time blogging Brethren can come up with something clever for him.
Shut ‘er down! I guess that this post doesn’t officially exist anymore as the game has been postponed… we’ll see what tomorrow brings us. Hopefully, it’s not a dead bird like what was brought to me today courtesy of my mutt.
.
This is good news. I hope he is healthy enough for a callup for Monday’s game. When he is, who goes down … a relief pitcher or one of the young left fielders? My guess would be Ray/Wilhelmsen or Peguero.
Just in: Game postponed
Hey on the off-chance it wasn’t clear – I was making disparaging comments about some of the folks in the comment threads over at the Times, not about Stone, Baker, et. al. 😀
And for those hoping for a doubleheader tomorrow, forecast is for more rain. Not showers, or cloudy with a chance, Rain. I think I’d rather not try to get well against the team with the best record in the American League. Let’s come home and get well against the Twins….
On Ackley and nicknames – it’s hard to beat “the Pride of Goose Creek” that one of our TV/Radio friends came up with. But it may be hard to work that in whenever he hits a ringing double or a homer. 😛
As much as I want to see Guti back in the majors, hopefully he sticks in AAA for a couple more games so I can see him on Monday and Tuesday.
Not to worry, it was clear what you were saying.
Now this reference is a bit more confusing to me in that the nickname you mention has actually been assigned to Justin Smoak. You were using it as an example, correct?
You don’t have anything to worry about. He will be in AAA at least until the Mariners return home for Monday’s game (perhaps longer). They aren’t sending him to Cleveland so he can sit in a puddle for a day.
Nice to see USSM regulars look down on Seattle Times commenters just as much as some of the worst of the Times commenters look down on this place. Yay, symmetry.
No, I screwed up. 😀 And “Pride of Winston-Salem” doesn’t work as well; plus it risks confusing him with a cigarette.
On the other hand, Smoak’s nickname “problem” is his name lends itself to so many awesome wordplays. I think he’ll just have to live with multiple nicknames.
You’re welcome.
well..we didn’t lose today.
But now league will be available for the next game. Joy.
On the bright side, once League’s pro career is over he’ll make one hell of a batting practice pitcher. Maybe he’ll be selected to the All-Star game to throw for the home run derby.
No double-header tomorrow per Shannon Drayer. I guess they are going to push one of this series’ games out to the next time they travel to Cleveland.
And, my Endy Chavez acquisition “surmising” from the other day died a quick death. The Rangers just called him up. Borbon went on the 15 day DL.
I’m wondering has any pitcher ever lost four games in one week? (Actually just six days.)
With the Red Sox getting absolutely no production from the catcher position… is there any chance we trade Olivo over there? I honestly think Gimenez is a better player than Olivo anyway.
I have a feeling he won’t be given another legit shot in this organization.
Not related to the game, but I was curious so I checked up on our old pal Jose Lopez. His stats (ESPN fantasy) 13/85 (hits/at bats), 9 (runs), 2 (HR’s), 8 (RBI’s), 1 (SB), .153 (Avg.). Nice to now he’s passing on the love ELSEWHERE 🙂
But… but… that CAN’T be right. Players always get better when they leave here!
You’d better check your numbers again… 😉
As a good part of pitching is deception, and League is as deceptive as, well, something that isn’t very deceptive, I’d have to disagree.
Million dollar stuff plus 99c head equals 99 cent reliever.
Everyone knows minor league numbers are as believable as Grimm’s Fairy Tales and as trustworthy as Dick Cheney.
