Game 46, Mariners At Padres

Hernandez vs Stauffer, 1:05 pm.

Happy Felix Day!

Over the last week, the Mariners starters have an ERA of 0.50. It’s funny what a combination of good pitchers, games in Safeco Field and Petco Park, and facing the Twins/Padres will do for you.

Ichiro, RF
Figgins, 3B
Smoak, 1B
Kennedy, 2B
Olivo, C

    Well done Ryan!!

  2. Ibuprofen on May 22nd, 2011 3:01 pm

Brendan Ryan is hot. Seems like he changed the position of his hands in his stance and since then, he has been on fire.

Come on now, let’s not be ridiculous here. It’s obvious that his in-progress handlebar mustache is the source of his power πŸ˜‰

Got this from Larry Stones blog…

It’s the 11th time Hernandez has fanned 10 or more. He struck out 10 at Boston back on May 1. With one more inning of two runs or fewer, the M’s will have their ninth straight game of at least seven frames and two runs or fewer allowed by starters. Nobody in MLB has done that since the Giants back in 1988.

  4. FetalPuzishun on May 22nd, 2011 3:05 pm

That’s Geoff Baker actually, my bad

  5. Westside guy on May 22nd, 2011 3:06 pm

I like Brendan Ryan. He’s great in the field, he puts everything on the line offensively (even though he’ll never be confused with a real hitter) – and he’s an interesting character and fun interview.

And in 2 weeks, we may get the best pitching prospect in the draft … or it could be the best hitting prospect. Either one will be just fine.

  7. Westside guy on May 22nd, 2011 3:07 pm

Wow – Wedge made a DEFENSIVE SUBSTITUTION!

  8. msfanmike on May 22nd, 2011 3:09 pm

I like Brendan Ryan. He’s great in the field,

Is the button that controls the “Prince of Reverse Mojo” in the ‘on’ or ‘off’ position, currently?

Please be sure to get the setting adjusted properly prior to full engagement. πŸ™‚

  9. Westside guy on May 22nd, 2011 3:13 pm

    Nice throw by Guti.

  10. zzyzx on May 22nd, 2011 3:13 pm

And the starting pitching run prevention streak finally ends…

  11. Ibuprofen on May 22nd, 2011 3:13 pm

    Oh man, I missed Guti.

  12. msfanmike on May 22nd, 2011 3:14 pm

Good golly Guti’s good. Gratitude graciously granted givingly.

  13. FetalPuzishun on May 22nd, 2011 3:15 pm

Thats it, officially the best performance by a starting staff in 23 years.

  14. G-Man on May 22nd, 2011 3:15 pm

Dumb Padres – down 4, made the third out at third.

  15. mlathrop3 on May 22nd, 2011 3:15 pm

We must be going good if Figi hangs on to that awesome throw by Guti.

  16. Westside guy on May 22nd, 2011 3:17 pm

That third out play was closer than I thought it was.

  17. msfanmike on May 22nd, 2011 3:21 pm

Figgins just looks lethargic all the time. I thought he looked half-asleep in person when I saw the game earlier this week against the Angels in person. Does he have any intensity, or am I imagining a lack thereof?

  18. Westside guy on May 22nd, 2011 3:23 pm

I don’t think Olivo is great, obviously – but I will take him over RoJo anyday.

  19. spankystout on May 22nd, 2011 3:24 pm

Ooh yes I tuned in at the perfect time: Felix K’s. RoJo. Long live the King!

  20. Breadbaker on May 22nd, 2011 3:26 pm

I love how Felix just gets nastier as his career goes on. He has a killer look in his eyes. Jorge Cantu is going to see that strikeout in his nightmares for a long time.

  21. sniper61 on May 22nd, 2011 3:26 pm

Hahahaha “it also helps that San Diego leads the known universe in strike outs”

  22. jordan on May 22nd, 2011 3:26 pm

This Felix Hernandez guy looks good. Where did we get him? Is this performance a fluke or something?

  23. FetalPuzishun on May 22nd, 2011 3:27 pm

Gotta give credit to the Padres fans, they’ve stuck around throughout this series despite essentially watching a team trying to hit golf balls with fungo bats.

  24. Westside guy on May 22nd, 2011 3:35 pm

Valle on Olivo: “What can’t that guy do?”

My instant response: Hit very well.

(Yes, I know he’s had two hits today)

  25. groundzero55 on May 22nd, 2011 3:37 pm

Guti needed to get that one out of the way, badly. That first rbi after coming back is often tough to get.

  26. groundzero55 on May 22nd, 2011 3:42 pm

(Yes, I know he’s had two hits today)

    You mean three hits πŸ™‚

If he’s near the bottom of my lineup, I’ll take Olivo any time. Not many teams are spoiled enough to have a catcher who rakes, there are maybe five or six real offensive threats at the position in the majors, even if all Olivo can do is hit singles, it’s a heck of a lot better than what we got from RoJo.

  27. Westside guy on May 22nd, 2011 3:45 pm

I totally agree, groundzero55 (and I think I said as much in a previous comment). I just get tired of the commentators treating him as if he’s Mike Piazza and Johnny Bench all rolled into one.

  28. KiWiNiNjA on May 22nd, 2011 3:45 pm

But RoJo had a great cERA

  29. Westside guy on May 22nd, 2011 3:46 pm

    Hehe, KiWiNiNjA.

  30. Breadbaker on May 22nd, 2011 3:48 pm

But RoJo had a great hit like Michael cERA Cera.

    /fixed

  31. Westside guy on May 22nd, 2011 3:48 pm

Darn boring Saunders in left – with Peguero that fly ball might’ve been interesting adventurous.

  32. KiWiNiNjA on May 22nd, 2011 3:49 pm

So is this Jeff Gray guy just another guy to keep our 4 bullpen arms company in the bullpen?

  33. Westside guy on May 22nd, 2011 3:49 pm

    Huzzah for the sweep!

  34. msfanmike on May 22nd, 2011 3:51 pm

    Nice
    Tidy
    Win

  35. Breadbaker on May 22nd, 2011 3:51 pm

    Jeff Gray: comfort animal.

  36. msfanmike on May 22nd, 2011 3:58 pm

I am a little disappointed not to see Cust be able to get to walk to the plate in the 9th and not swing the bat today.

  37. KiWiNiNjA on May 22nd, 2011 4:02 pm

OAK-SF now tied into the 9th.

    Gogo 3rd!

  38. KiWiNiNjA on May 22nd, 2011 4:07 pm

The same Cust that’s 2nd on the team in OPS to Smoak for the month of May?

  39. Chipanese on May 22nd, 2011 5:05 pm

    We’re not last anymore!!! Wooooo!

Anyone else remember when the AL West was talked about as the strongest division in baseball?

  42. groundzero55 on May 22nd, 2011 6:56 pm

    It wasn’t that long ago.

  43. Nicbp253 on May 22nd, 2011 7:37 pm

I sure like watching these M’s! Can’t wait for Ackley to get the call.

  44. MrZDevotee on May 22nd, 2011 11:22 pm

Great week for the M’s. And great week for the pitching.

It’s insane to think without League’s meltdown last week, the M’s would have the 2nd best record in the AL (26-20), and a 2 game lead in the West.

It’s also insane that our offense is better without a DH, and giving away an out at the 9 spot (which seems like another good argument for moving Figgins there).

Go M’s! (Let’s schedule MORE Padres and Twins games, please…)
