Game 47, Mariners At Twins
Vargas vs Pavano, 5:05 pm.
Considering that the Mariners can’t play themselves, their best match-ups in terms of keeping their opponents off the board are almost certainly Minnesota and San Diego. Both teams have lousy offenses and play in big parks where it’s really hard to hit home runs. The last week has been fun, but it’s also been an exercise in the importance of park factors and quality of opponent. For three more days, though, we should be able to continue to enjoy the M’s pitchers all looking like Cy Young.
Ichiro, RF
Figgins, 3B
Smoak, 1B
Cust, DH
Gutierrez, CF
Peguero, LF
Ryan, SS
WIlson, 2B

I don’t know. I missed his pre-game analysis.
However, like you … I laughed at the IBB to Figgins too. Who do they think he was, Cust?
I should have left a 🙂 at the end of my previous comment.
Woo Mariners!
I think they were remembering the guy who played for the Angels. How’d that work out for them?
.
I know what you meant. I felt the smile through the keyboard, nonetheless. Winning cures all.
Nice win tonight. Just a really nice win. They basically stole a game … with their offense. That’s new!
Good news, for the first time in forever (actually the 1st week of the season) the Mariners are in 3rd and 1 game below .500
I think you are right. This must have been the case because walking an automatic out is probably not a winning strategy. Gardenhire must have figured that Figgins would get his bat on the ball and was simply playing the percentages; but what he didn’t know was that it probably would have been a tapper back to the mound.
Dang, that was nice to see some clutch hitting there. Go M’s.
That was a really fantastic game and I have to tip my hat to Wedge’s managing, he nearly emptied the bench and most of it worked, certainly better than any of Gardenhire’s moves (and walking Figgins negated any good move he could possibly make). Bummer to hear Vargas struggle, but a win is more important than a pitching streak. What’s funny about this stretch of the last few weeks is that a poor pitching game has seemed more anomalous than a good offensive game (which a wonderful thing). Tonight, both anomalies happened, a pitching streak ended, and we came out on top.
To: M’s fans!
BCC: Michael Saunders, Jack Z, E Wedge
Carlos “Tiny” Peguero has at least 1 RBI in 6 of his last 7 starts. And 4 games in a row with an RBI now…
Nice work, there, rookie!
This game really showed the value of one more man on the bench and one less arm in the bullpen.
Okay, I would hope we all know enough to stay away from evaluating player performance based on RBIs…
Westy, it was supposed to be humorous… C’mon man, we’re having fun with these (how do you spell it…) “wins” things.
The actual point being, Saunders has competition, and needs to improve his overall performance if he wants to own the LF position outright.
I didn’t feel that was necessarily true when Peguero was ONLY flailing helplessly at breaking balls and walking back to the bench with a K.
Plus, as tonight showed, there’s also something to be said for having Saunders on the bench to pinch run, or for a defensive upgrade if we’re ahead in the 9th.
(Another attempt at humor: C’mon, did last year ruin us so badly that we have to now warn each other to steer clear from rating the team based on if we can drive in runs or not? *laugh*)
I’m really impressed with the way that Eric Wedge used his bench tonight! He really impressed me with his in game management and substitutions. My hat’s off to him. Good game tonight Mariners!
Okay, okay, okay… How ’bout:
Saunders: 128 AB’s, 22 hits, 5 2Bs, 2 HR, 33 Ks, OPS .505
Peguero: 45 AB’s, 10 hits, 2 2Bs, 1 3B, 2 HR, 11 Ks, OPS .645
(Most interesting to me is they have a nearly identical strikeout rate– I thought Peguero would be higher.)
And then there’s their defense….
per Drayer on the post game show, the team nickname for Peguero is Peggy.
I think Pegger might be more appropriate, but whatever.
Give him time.
Saunders: 128 AB’s, 22 hits, 5 2Bs, 2 HR, 33 Ks, OPS .505
Peguero: 45 AB’s, 10 hits, 2 2Bs, 1 3B, 2 HR, 11 Ks, OPS .645
If you swapped their defensive abilities, you’d actually have one above replacement player.
Zips has Peguero at a +40% strikeout rate. So far, he’s been at 26.7%, which I find encouraging.
Yeah, sorry about that! These “wins” things are new, and a bit scary to me…
No argument there at all. I really hoped Saunders would turn the corner once he was given solid, consistent playing time and regular at-bats – but obviously that hasn’t happened yet (and may not).
To be honest, though – as much fun as it is to watch Peguero’s massive hacks, I think Wilson is a bigger threat to Saunders. Wilson seems to play credible defense. If Peguero makes it onto a MLB roster long-term, I suspect it’ll be as a DH who can play the field in an emergency.
Yes – you’d have one decent player and one McDonalds counter worker. 😀
Not if you’re a Savage Love reader…
(I’m just happy that the M’s aren’t playing like Santorum lately.)
