Game 59, Rays At Mariners

Bedard vs Davis, 1:10 pm.

Wade Davis, K/9, by season:

2009: 8.92
2010: 6.05
2011: 4.25

Don’t think of him as the hard-throwing top prospect he was a few years ago. Think of him as a pitcher that this team could light up, especially if they don’t swing at crap out of the strike zone.

    Lets win another series!

  2. King.Dome on June 5th, 2011 4:03 pm

9 runs, 4 in the 8th, AND a hit by Figgy – wow. A 7-3 homestand, that is all kinds of good. I think I read a few days ago the last time we won 6 straight series was 2001. Finish it Brandon.

  3. fargomsfan on June 5th, 2011 4:03 pm

I will take a 1-2-3 inning from League now. Please and thank you…

  4. juneau_fan on June 5th, 2011 4:05 pm

Uh, Dave Sims, stop being a freak, okay?

“So U2 was at Qwest Field last night and I went to hear Moody Blues at Chateau St. Michel…”

Uh, totally weird, pointless non-corollary statement.

  5. Jimmie the Geek on June 5th, 2011 4:06 pm

    M’s win! W00t!

  6. Ibuprofen on June 5th, 2011 4:06 pm

That was a looooong shovel toss.

Six series in a row, sweet!

  7. lalo on June 5th, 2011 4:06 pm

    Great, good job Brandon:::

  8. OffensivelyChallenged on June 5th, 2011 4:07 pm

M’s looking good. Nice to see some runs. Now if Texas would lose about 10 in a row we would be set.

  9. MrZDevotee on June 5th, 2011 4:09 pm

(Please God, don’t let anyone break the news to these guys that right handed hitters DON’T hit for power at Safeco– especially Olivo!)

  10. mlathrop3 on June 5th, 2011 4:10 pm

We might start selling some more tickets if this keeps up. Might have to make a trip from CDA soon.

Wedge has these guys playing scrappy… Love it.

  11. Ichirolling51 on June 5th, 2011 4:10 pm

Wow, 1st time since ’01 that we’ve won 6 serries in a row. Really, it’s been that long? Good omen?

  12. leon0112 on June 5th, 2011 4:11 pm

Halman has more hits than Saunders in the last two weeks.

  13. Auggeydog on June 5th, 2011 4:13 pm

If Halman can figure out the warning track and hit .290 we could have a real LF.

  14. Sports on a Schtick on June 5th, 2011 4:13 pm

NOW IT’S TIME TO SHIFT TO FULL-BLOWN DRAFT MODE!!!!

  15. Carson on June 5th, 2011 4:13 pm

    Nice vulcher by Wright.

  16. Breadbaker on June 5th, 2011 4:16 pm

Whatever it was that hit Olivo when he came here the first time seems to have dissipated. He really seems capable of hitting as a rightie in Safeco. No, he’s not Johnny Bench, but given the parade of catchers here after he failed the first time, you gotta think, what if?

  17. SonOfZavaras on June 5th, 2011 4:17 pm

Gods, this stuff is fun to watch. Nice vulch win, Jamie. Nice suicide squeeze earlier. And Halman? Have you figured it out?? Two of your three hits came on breaking balls you would’ve swung at early and over the top of before.

I’ve been such an ardent critic of you over the last two years, I’ve said more than once how much I doubt that you become a big league regular…but man, I’d love to see the club benefit by me being wrong about you.

  18. MrZDevotee on June 5th, 2011 4:21 pm

A couple more weeks of this and we’ll have to remove the parking brakes from our enthusiasm!

    Thank you, 2011 M’s!!!

(I’ve completely forgotten how the first couple weeks of the season we were on pace to shatter the old record for men left on base!)

  19. Ichirolling51 on June 5th, 2011 4:24 pm

Ok lets talk draft. Who do we take? Hoping (better be) either Rendon or Starling.

  20. OffensivelyChallenged on June 5th, 2011 4:27 pm

Ok lets talk draft. Who do we take? Hoping (better be) either Rendon or Starling.

Starling might be a little difficult to sign. He’s got all the physical tools though. Just hate to waste a #2 pick and not sign him.

  21. groundzero55 on June 5th, 2011 4:31 pm

And that’s why we aren’t going to draft him.

It’ll be Rendon or Cole and I’m leaning Rendon.

Last thing we need is to use our pick and then have the guy decide to play football.

  22. Ichirolling51 on June 5th, 2011 4:35 pm

Starling would be dumb not to sign. He is NOT an NFL QB, and has no future in football beyond college, unless it’s as a WR. Plus, the new rookie wage scale in the NFL will cost him even more money. Whereas, he’d be drafted #2 by us, and if he goes to college he may not be a top 5 pick in 2 or 3 years. If he wants to maximize his value he’ll sign. Rendon is still my top choice though.

  23. SonOfZavaras on June 5th, 2011 4:45 pm

There’s some reports that the Pirates are locked in on Cole at #1. I’m hearing from others that we are NOT in on a pitcher at #2.

Rendon is a heck of a risk, seems like there are not enough clear positives in his medical reports.

Tomorrow will be interesting,no matter what.

  24. groundzero55 on June 5th, 2011 4:50 pm

Do we have any more picks in the first round?

  25. Breadbaker on June 5th, 2011 4:58 pm

    No.

  26. juneau_fan on June 5th, 2011 5:00 pm

Yes, looking over the list, I found it quite annoying to see much more successful teams with compensation picks above the suck that is the Mariners system.

So now powerhouse teams should allow good players to leave so they can get into the first round of the draft?

  27. Adam B. on June 5th, 2011 5:05 pm

How about a round for Mr. Olivo?

What seemed like a desperation move last off-season has so-far paid off some nice dividends for the M’s.

Certainly he has his flaws (Passed-balls, hitting for average…) but so far his strengths (Pop, above average base-running [for a catcher], leadership, all-around not being Rob Johnson or Rene Rivera…) seem to have more then made up for them.

He’s handily beating his projections, and barring a second half Hindenberg impersonation, he looks to be another feather in Zduriencik’s cap.

I don’t think he’s a long-term answer for the M’s, but as far as stop-gaps go, it looks like the M’s made the right call.

  28. IwearMsHats on June 5th, 2011 5:15 pm

I just realized – I think this is the first time Dave Cameron’s said something in the intro that didn’t manage to turn into a weird reverse mojo curse.

It happens so often, I came in this thread, reading it for the first time after the game, half expecting Dave laying out expectations of Halman striking out and swinging at bad pitches.

  29. Sports on a Schtick on June 5th, 2011 5:20 pm

How about a round for Mr. Olivo?

And one for Bedard. He’s been kicking ass lately.

  30. Breadbaker on June 5th, 2011 5:30 pm

Notice how no one is talking about Bedard’s personality this year? The guy is actually tough as nails and loyal as all get out, but was put in a difficult position he wasn’t responsible for. The true character of Erik Bedard is someone pretty awesome. Instead of all this talk about trading him, why aren’t we talking about an extension?

  31. Ichirolling51 on June 5th, 2011 5:30 pm

`I hope JZ doesn’t allow a lousy strained shoulder to detour him from making the right pick.

  32. Carson on June 5th, 2011 5:57 pm

Churchill had a quote from an executive saying he believes the M’s would pay Bubba’s bonus demands.

There’s been some word that his family is in financial hardship, too. And it’s terriblly selfish to want that to be a benefit for us, but the kid may have a really hard time turning down all that cash.

His upside is ridiculous. I like Rendon but I think I’ve grown to like Bubba more. What I think Jack will have to decide on is a guy who can help as soon as next season if healthy or roll the dice on a guy with the moon as his limit. A blessing and a curse of a position to be in at the same time methinks.

  33. daco on June 5th, 2011 6:04 pm

Nice game for Mr. Halman. And we finally have someone hitting over .300! 🙂

  34. greentunic on June 5th, 2011 6:08 pm

111 pitches?! That’s a good amount for Felix, let alone Bedard! Kudos to him!

Ya, I feel pretty bad; I started to join the Bedard bashers last year. It clearly was not for a lack of desire that Bedard would not pitch late into games or pitch more often.

He has always had a bit of a smarmy and occasionally… salty personality, especially with the media (alot of one word answers), but he is definitely a fighter.

  35. Ibuprofen on June 5th, 2011 7:06 pm

I’ll be happy with Rendon, Starling, or Bauer tomorrow.

Amen! There’s always talk about a 1-2 punch and that’s great for a team. But imagine a team having a 1-2-3 punch. Mmm..?
    Go M’s

  37. Westside guy on June 5th, 2011 8:07 pm

Don’t worry – if Bedard gets hurt later this season, there’ll be plenty of time for people to turn on him again.
