Top Slugging 1B Tabbed at #92, Kevin Cron to Seattle

Clearly, the Mariners don’t value offense in the slightest.

So the third round pick is the other Cron in the draft, which is to say not the old Cron. Kevin Cron is the brother of C.J. Cron, the Utah first baseman who went to the Angels as the seventeenth overall. Both are the offspring of Chris Cron who was a big leaguer and a current double-A manager. Both Crons are similar in that they’re mostly focused on hitting and lack defensive tools, but Kevin actually broke a lot of C.J.’s old records and a lot of the other prep HR records for Arizona along the way (hit fifty-nine, previous high: forty-four). Good bat skills, good power, right-handed hitter, but that’s not really damning considering that he’s believed to have so much power. The issue is that he’s known to have a commitment to Texas Christian, and the Horned Frogs tend to get their man a lot of the time. He probably was not so high on the boards because his commitment was thought to be fairly solid (3.92 GPA and baseball skills have helped him get a solid scholarship).

I’m not seeing defensive videos, likely for a reason but the swing seems level, the mechanics good, and the power super easy. High school hitters just don’t generally have power like that, but by high school standards, Cron is a mountain of a man.

Ahh, nothing better than getting mocked for my position.

    toodles…..

Hope they are able to sign him. If not, do they get a compensation pick next year?

High school hitter, so he’s probably at least 4 years away from the Majors, assuming that they do sign him.

I like the pick. The kid can crush, even if it is high school in warm climate.

    Let’s hope they sign him.

One pick is not a sample size.

Yes, and he’s probably four or five years away if not more, but who knows?

If still available at 121, I’d like to see Osich or Delmonico.

First line after opening the page… Made me laugh out loud.

Sorry Charlie. (I even defended you a bit in the other posting– the whole “run differential” thingy playing out poorly at its extremes.)

I’ll second this. I would have picked Osich here.

    Nick Delmonico (thumbs up)!

Not really paying attention other than to catch updates, but I wouldn’t think he’d still be available, even now– injury concerns?

Getting some power in the system would be nice. Only other guy with “easy power” would be Poythress and he obviously has some serious shortcomings. Really hope they are able to sign Cron.

Is there ANY chance they leave him at Catcher? So, he’s big for the position and he probably wouldn’t be even average as a defensive catcher…but I honestly don’t care. If a guy can hit 30 HRs from the C position you can live with less-than-ideal defense behind the plate. And its not like we’ve had even average C defense the last few years.

Go for RH hitters with enough power to hit the ball out of Yellowstone, never mind Safeco, and collect lefties at the positions where you’re not likely to find big-time power. Makes sense to me.

DarkKnight, I’d think trying to make anybody as big as Cron catch would be a sure way to ruin his knees.

    Ancient/DarkKnight-

“Cron” is the Celtic word for “Designated Hitter”.

Plus, if we can ink Delmonico– “catcher- (check)” (Won the High School “Power Showcase” last year, with one blast at 447 ft!)

  13. Jay Yencich on June 7th, 2011 10:35 am

That was the elder Cron that was the catcher.

  14. Kunkoh on June 7th, 2011 10:39 am

I don’t think that first ball he hit ever came down. I kept waiting for it. Rewatched it a couple times. I’m now relatively certain it’s in orbit.

(DELETED- whoops- sorry, confused Jay’s comment about Cron with DelMonico)

I thought you complained the M’s don’t value offense, so they wouldn’t pick any hitters?

Kevin was a catcher too. http://varsity.evtrib.com/images/photos/2011/04/01/2xt4ghbg.jpg

Although he broke his ankle and had to move positions for a while I believe.

But TAM is probably correct – 240+ is just too heavy for the knees to be a full time catcher.
