Game 102, Mariners at Yankees

DMZ · July 25, 2011 at 3:18 pm · Filed Under Mariners

4:05. Feels weird to put up a game thread today. Vargas versus Garcia! And Vargas gets

RF-L Ichiro!
SS-R Ryan
2B-L Ackley
C-R Olivo
3B-L Kennedy
DH-L Carp
1B-S Smoak
CF-R Gutierrez
LF-R Halman

Two back to back lefties! Nooooooooooooooooooo! And since so far I’m 100% for Olivo having good games when I doubt him, let me just try our luck: you stink Olivo! Don’t worry, he’s a professional, this stuff washes right off him.

He still shouldn’t be hitting #4.

SS-R Jeter
CF-L Granderson
1B-S Teixeira
2B-L Cano
DH-S Swisher
C-R Martin
RF-R Jones
3B-R Nunez
LF-L Gardner

So here’s where the isolation pod problem comes in. I gotta go look at the Yankee roster to figure out — wait, Andruw Jones? How.. I have to go read a transaction log. I will note that I still hate the Yankees, so I can’t be that far out of things.

“The throw hit the bat”. Can our season get any worse?

What position player do they have to pitch the 8th and 9th?

    Figgins?
    Cust?
    Wilson?

I’d really like to see Cust pitch.

    The Curse of Bobby Ayala?

  4. sherdogg21 on July 25th, 2011 7:17 pm

i am actually curious as to what would happen if you replaced the opposing pitcher with a pitching machine, set it 85 mph and let Mariners hack away, what would happen? 5 runs? 6?

  5. henryv on July 25th, 2011 7:17 pm

Oh, right Figgins is away from the team…

    However, Bard could pitch.

    Don’t ask questions like that.

I should call Vegas right now and drop $50 on us not winning another game this season. Funny thing is Id probably get even odds.

  8. sherdogg21 on July 25th, 2011 7:19 pm

Texas has scored 18 runs against the Twins, taken out Michael Young and Josh Hamilton… and its only the top of the 6th.

  9. henryv on July 25th, 2011 7:20 pm

    Ackley is looking sloppy today.

    Perhaps he isn’t perfect.

    Online pizza tracking.

There is something wrong with this country, and this is only a symptom.

  12. Jokerman on July 25th, 2011 7:23 pm

Thats only Ackleys 2nd error all season, right? Not bad for switching postions.

Wouldn’t it be funny if they lost?

Watching The Bronx is Burning right now. Anyone opposed to hiring John Turturro to manage the Mariners as Billy Martin?

no that sort of thing only happens to us

Is it possible that Ackley actually finishes the year on the top of the WAR list for the M’s, while only playing 80 games?

Is there anyone who is going to be a 3+ WAR player? I guess Ryan, maybe, but that’s it.

  17. henryv on July 25th, 2011 7:30 pm

no that sort of thing only happens to us

EXACTLY what I was thinking about.

Post-game interviews would be more interesting.

    We want Cust (to pitch)!

Im almost convinced we’re cursed. We could sign both Fielder and Pujols to 5 million a year contracts and theyd instantly turn into Jose Vidro…..*sigh*.

I’m becoming more and more inclined to agree… OK, so Boston sold The Babe. And the Cubs refused admission to that goat… What is it that we did?

    Fired Bill Plumber?

I think when we hung the “116” wins mini banner on the bottom of the 2001 banner in Safeco. Something about it doesnt sit right with the baseball gods….

The A’s put up a banner to honor their 2001 winning streak, which didn’t come close to winning them a division, a much bigger banner than the 116 wins thing. Bigger than the division title banner. I haven’t seen them cursed.

Maybe we’re just the Pirates of the AL (pay no attention to what theyre doing this year).

  27. pgreyy on July 25th, 2011 8:21 pm

We didn’t get Lou the one guy he said he needed…

  28. Ichirolling51 on July 25th, 2011 8:21 pm

Wow, this team has totally quit and has shown no signs of effort. 50 straight may not be out of the question.

  29. tubbabubba22 on July 25th, 2011 8:21 pm

Our hitting has been much better the last week or so. At least that gives us some kind of hope for next year right?

  30. Jokerman on July 25th, 2011 8:24 pm

This is like cutting the rings on one of those chains you make for Christmas. Only seven games to go!!

  31. G-Man on July 25th, 2011 8:25 pm

At least we’re not the Twins tonight. We may be bad, but they are just plain embarassing in Texas right now.

EDIT: Hey, I said it before ROOT did.

  32. Jokerman on July 25th, 2011 8:46 pm

You think Howie or Chuckie are stupid enough to sell their souls for a few World Series championships? Please please please………

  33. henryv on July 25th, 2011 8:56 pm

I wonder if CC Sabathia was pitching in Seattle or Oakland (with the location and offense) if he would even get a single vote for Cy Young.

  34. FelixFanChris420 on July 25th, 2011 9:24 pm

It feels like were never going to win again. Is it just me, or has this year been even more frustrating than last year? Also, in regards to Jack Z not coming back, I think that would be horrible givin what he had to start with..and if all the GM’s we hire “don’t get the job done”, when will ownership wise up and fire the guys choosing all the GM’s? I honestly don’t think this team will win anything as long as HowChuck is around. Didn’t Pat Gillick say he’d be open to becoming a team president?(I know, its a pipe dream)

  35. DMZ on July 25th, 2011 9:25 pm

“pipe dream” + 420 in user name = difficult to take you seriously

So, if yer Ms management (and if you were, I’d be pissed at you), who do you sacrifice for this pathetic fall off a cliff? If we finish with another 100 losses (well on our way!), they have to do something right?

But of course that’s just for PR. I don’t think this season is Jack’s or Wedgie’s fault. A lot of stuff just happened to go wrong (but not the starting pitching). Maybe it’s a curse thing. I think you change on-field personnel (including a certain right fielder, but that’s never going to happen), but I keep Wedgie and Jack for another year.

Which means I just cursed them and they will be fired. Perhaps within the week.

SportsCenter opens with 10 minutes on the NFL lockout ending, then spends five on the Mariners.

Yay, we finally got some recognition!

Agreed…given the cluster that Jack inherited from the previous (ahem) GM, it’s tempting to blame him, but it’s honestly a tough sell. Wedge? It’s hard to blame him entirely either.

There’s enough blame to go around this year, just like in years past. When we pitch, we can’t hit. When we hit, we can’t pitch. “No one’s job is safe…everyone’s playing for their roster spot” is such a huge cliche, but I would like to see it have some teeth for once. I’m not suggesting that we DFA Ichiro or anything, but for once can we stop just flapping gums and actually mean what we say?

    Jeez…16? That’s 10% of the season!

It’s like finding out your cousin is the one that robbed the local bank, and they come to interview you.

… with more to come tonight. Unfortunately, there is an easy parallel to be made between the NFL and the Mariners: They are the Detroit Lions of Major League baseball.

As a lifelong Packer fan (47 years and counting now), I always wondered what it was like to be a Lions fan. Now I know.

    I don’t like it.
