Anything on the trade with detroit?

  2. thedude1987 on July 30th, 2011 12:48 pm

I read from some tiger fans that 3B prospect, Martinez, was expected to be moved to left field.

Sorry about timing… I was editing Podcast #2

There’s a post on the trade up now.

  5. Seattleken on July 30th, 2011 1:08 pm

Why do the M’s trade for major league ready crap?

Charlie Furbush (85-89mph) is a grade C prospect who if he works out is a middle relief pitcher/5th starter. Think French.

Casper Wells is a 26 year old grade C+ prospect, hes a backup at best on a real team. He should hit .250 with 15 homers and 10 steals with a good arm.

The only real prospect is 3B Fernando Martinez another grade C+ because he looks good in a uniform. He has poor strike zone judgement 4:1 K:BB ratio.

    The PTBNL better be good….

As while Fister isn’t a #1 he is a solid cheap #3 starter for the next 3 years. Trading him makes sense since the M’s need to rebuild but get something that could be very good for him. If not use him as a third starter and let him go in three years a type A or B and get 1st round pick. The deal should have been for real MLB potential like Andy Oliver lefty with a 93mph fastball, Nick Castellanos first round pick 25 homer power.

I just don’t understand why the Mariners want the best AAA club in baseball, as they consistently trade for players who have little chance of being major league stars.

    sorry missed the trade thread

You mean arguably the best OF currently in the M’s organization? For very little money… And team control? That’s what you don’t like about him?

I like this trade. Martinez is somewhere above Liddi and maybe approaching Franklin. He’s a corner infielder with power (presumably).

I think Furbush is the “toss in” from Detroit’s perspective– which if we’re gonna take somebody, why not a lefty bullpen guy (the missing link in recent years for the Mariners).

And the “player to be named later” looks promising at this point. I’ve seen various reports that it’s a “plus prospect” from a list of 3.

Nothing wrong with this trade. All signs (in the minors) point to starting pitching being a strength in the future (Paxton, Hultzen, Beavan, etc.).

This is a better deal than simply unloading veterans for whatever. Detroit actually got something they needed, and were willing to pay for it.

Nice work, Z. (And given that the rumor around the league was that the M’s wouldn’t move Fister– on the M’s website, two stories below the trade is the story that “Z wants to keep the Rotation together”– I think we used that to our advantage.)

  8. SadPanda on July 30th, 2011 1:26 pm

    Ack attack!!

  9. MrZDevotee on July 30th, 2011 1:32 pm

    Seattleken-
That wasn’t meant to be snarky either– I started off with your perspective and then gave it a little more thought… Any other OF we were gonna trade for (given our tradeable talent) we were gonna have to overpay for. And honestly, nobody was really gonna be light years above Wells, in regards to value-to-$$$’s ratio. And when there are SO MANY positions that need upgrading on this team, this was a pretty shrewd move that cost us virtually nothing and brought in possibly THREE active contributors (ignoring Furbush, and being optimistic about the PTBNL).

I like our recent deadline deals…

    Bedard = Smoak, Beavan, Lueke
Fister = Wells, Martinez, upside prospect

(my interest in these moves doesn’t care really about Lowe, Furbush, or Pauley)

  10. MrZDevotee on July 30th, 2011 1:35 pm

Dustin is such a small piece of the puzzle, but man oh man does he make it nice to think it’s possible for this team to have real baseball players.

    (bowing in honor)

  11. Jordan on July 30th, 2011 1:40 pm

Bedard Lee? = Smoak, Beavan, Lueke
Fister = Wells, Martinez, upside prospect

    Lawson Laffey

  12. Shawnuel on July 30th, 2011 1:41 pm

MrZ, I’m sure you meant Lee, not Bedard.

  13. MrZDevotee on July 30th, 2011 1:42 pm

    Uh yeah-
Did I mention we just had a baby girl 4 days ago? (Hence my absence lately– both on USS Mariner and at getting any sleep! *laugh*)

    Cliff F’in Lee, of course.

(I am, however, still optimistic that Boston is still interested in Bedard)

  14. Westside guy on July 30th, 2011 1:44 pm

Congratulations MrZ! Hope you and the Mrs. are getting at least a little sleep! 😀

  15. Westside guy on July 30th, 2011 1:46 pm

Hey does anyone remember when Ackley was called up? And a certain USSMariner main contributor talked about what would be a reasonable expectation on how he might perform, right out of the box?

Well, Dave, I’ve gotta say – hahahahahahaha!! Ackley has thrown “reasonable” out the window. He’s already an all-star stud.

  16. Westside guy on July 30th, 2011 1:47 pm

Did the Fox announcer just say that was a “good throw”?

  17. Auggeydog on July 30th, 2011 1:59 pm

I was looking at http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/ and it was interesting they talked about the Pirates being interested in Furbush. I wonder if maybe Jack is looking at sending him over there now. They could have done a 3 team deal, but maybe he did not like the deal. Would be interesting to see him send him off before he even got here. They also talked about the Cards looking at Furcal, I wonder if Jack would consider trading Ryan for the right price. I like him, but if we got a couple really good prospects it might be better.

Congrats Mr Z catch the sleep when you can.

  18. lalo on July 30th, 2011 2:01 pm

Apparently, the PTBNL will be Nick Castellano, Chance Ruffin or Swylyn, i like the deal…

  19. Shawnuel on July 30th, 2011 2:17 pm

Shannon Drayer tweeted that the PTBNL will be one of Detroit’s top 3 2010 draft picks. That would be Castellanos, Ruffin and Smyly. Zduriencik said on KIRO that he was given three players from which to choose from. Is it really possible that Castellanos is one of those players? That would make this a SLAMMIN’ deal if true.

MrZ, Congratulations and I hope that for the next few weeks you become Mr.ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

  20. lalo on July 30th, 2011 2:20 pm

I would love that, but seems like the list will be, Ruffin, Swylyn or Brantly.

  21. PinedaExpress on July 30th, 2011 2:20 pm

Is it really possible that Castellanos is one of those players?

I doubt its him. On the TV broadcast Rosenthal said one of the reasons the Tigers were willing to give up Martinez is because they have anotehr 3B in the system that will eventually block him. That would be Castellanos….

  22. pgreyy on July 30th, 2011 2:37 pm

Calm down, big man. You’ve still got this.

  23. pgreyy on July 30th, 2011 2:41 pm

    Damn.

  24. MrZDevotee on July 30th, 2011 2:53 pm

Ack doing some good work with the stick… And on the basepaths… Picking up Pineda… Nice work.

Actually, Ackley should consider using Rush’s “Working Man” as his at bat music. (laugh)

  25. msfanmike on July 30th, 2011 2:54 pm

Atta boy Ack … nice knock Carp.

Someone get Smoak a ligher bat.

  26. msfanmike on July 30th, 2011 2:55 pm

Smoak – DP … meh. Man, what happened to him?

  27. SadPanda on July 30th, 2011 2:56 pm

What’s wrong with Smoaky? I can’t remember the last time I seen him hit a ball hard. His bat looks slow. Fouling off a lot of pitches.

  28. MrZDevotee on July 30th, 2011 2:56 pm

    From MLBTradeRumors:

3:51pm: The player to be named later in this trade is one of the Tigers’ top three picks from the 2010 draft, tweets ESPN’s Shannon Drayer. That means Nick Castellanos, Chance Ruffin, or Drew Smyly. I’m guessing Ruffin or Smyly.

    Hmmmm…

  29. Westside guy on July 30th, 2011 2:58 pm

Given the team we have – does anyone still wish we’d gotten Strasburg (even non-injured) rather than Ackley?

Also – I don’t expect Drayer (or anyone else) actually knows, for a fact, that the PTBNL is one of the draft picks. That’s just reasonable speculation.

  30. G-Man on July 30th, 2011 3:08 pm

C’mon, Gray, you could have gotten that GB to 3rd for a DP on the first pitch to the previous batter. 🙂

  31. msfanmike on July 30th, 2011 3:08 pm

Given the team we have – does anyone still wish we’d gotten Strasburg (even non-injured) rather than Ackley?

    Nope. Not me.

I like every day players who can hit. I wish we had more than 1.5.

  32. lalo on July 30th, 2011 3:11 pm

So, who is our setup man without Pauley? Dan Cortes or Lueke?

  33. G-Man on July 30th, 2011 3:16 pm

    Maybe Wright will set up?

Curious that they demoted Laffey last night, then found themselves 2 men short today. I know they needed the space for Cortes, and Laffey had thrown a lot of pitches, but why not wait until just before today’s game, since they had a trade in the works?

  34. msfanmike on July 30th, 2011 3:18 pm

The 3B that we acquired from the Tigers (Francisco Martinez)has 27 errors at 3B this season in AA. Sounds like a perfect fit for the left side of the infield next to Triunfel.

I heard Robin Yount had over 50 errors one season when he was in the minors, so I guess there is not a lot of stock to put into the MiLB stats, but I think Yount was 17 at the time and probably playing on a lesser quality field.

I sure hope Martinez develops into a quality hitter and can improve the glove work.

Wells – uh – okay … anything near average is an improvement. Can play multiple OF positions … fine, great.

Furbush: Anybody have a funnier line than me? Probably good to leave that one alone for now.

Come on PTBN! We hold out hope and boy, we sure like to hold out hope! We have very few nice things, so we have to.

We really didn’t have to give up a lot to get these guys, but I would sure like to see at least 2 of them work out.

  35. G-Man on July 30th, 2011 3:19 pm

Setting up today will be Gray, since he didn’t break a sweat with his 2-pitch 2/3 of an inning.

  36. msfanmike on July 30th, 2011 3:20 pm

Furbush: Anybody have a funnier line than me? Probably good to leave that one alone for now.

Hey, just thought of a funnier one than the one I had: Maybe we can also acquire Fukudome in the near future. Perfect match.

  37. Westside guy on July 30th, 2011 3:27 pm

Casey Kotchman should’ve had the decency to continue sucking after we cut him loose.

  38. lalo on July 30th, 2011 3:35 pm

I´m pretty sure we can get something decent for League and Bedard, let´s hope some team thinks the same…

  39. Westside guy on July 30th, 2011 3:36 pm

    Beautiful, Brandon!

  40. lalo on July 30th, 2011 3:36 pm

    Wow, League is filthy!

  41. pgreyy on July 30th, 2011 3:36 pm

    …and there was much rejoicing.

  42. Westside guy on July 30th, 2011 3:43 pm

I’m still trying to figure out where all these rumors about Dustin Ackley not being able to play second base came from. Was everyone just parroting Keith Law? And why did Keith think that? I know he usually likes to see players first hand… did he just happen to catch one exceptionally bad game?

Ackley is playing a reasonably good second base, to my eyes anyway. I’m certainly not seeing any Jose Lopez’ sorts of moments when he’s out there.

  43. SadPanda on July 30th, 2011 3:44 pm

Smoak needs to figure out his swing for next year. It’s like he just died at the plate.

  44. Ichirolling51 on July 30th, 2011 3:53 pm

Could we see a curveball coming in the form of Jacob Turner? One can only hope, right? Even though he isn’t a position player. Or maybe, I’m just putting too much faith in JZ?

  45. auldguy on July 30th, 2011 4:15 pm

They also talked about the Cards looking at Furcal, I wonder if Jack would consider trading Ryan for the right price.

Since the Cards traded Ryan because The Tony La Russa didn’t like him, I can’t see much likelihood of them wanting him back now. Not to mention that he is one of the few Mariners exceeding expectations and providing reasonable consistency on both O and D.

I read from some tiger fans that 3B prospect, Martinez, was expected to be moved to left field.

The Tigers have another 3trd base phenom in the minors and were trying to get both on the field simultaneously.

  46. heychuck01 on July 30th, 2011 4:32 pm

From my recolection, Keith Law always cited “sources” when evaluating Ackley. So, I have to question his “sources” on the “not being able to play 2nd” and the “no power ” evaluations.

His sources were also off on Smoak. He “had no glove”. Watching him for a year, he seems to have a glove. It is his offense that is starting to worry me.
