Game 113, Mariners at Angels

Happy Felix Day! It’s amazing how much better Felix day feels when the team looks capable of scoring a few runs and hasn’t just lost 10+ games in a row. Felix deserves so much better than he’s got this year, and it’s just nice to see him get a start behind a line-up that’s pretty much MLB quality.

The M’s face Ervin Santana who’s coming off a no-hitter against Cleveland, and is enjoying his best season since 2008. He doesn’t have much of a platoon split, so Casper Wells is back in the line-up in RF (Ichiro gets another DH appearance). I might’ve started Trayvon Robinson in CF to give Guti a day off, but if the M’s really wanted to rest Ichiro’s legs, then I understand the idea behind the line-up. Carp’s at 1B again, which is preferable to Kennedy at 1B for any number of reasons. Brendan Ryan’s out again after being scratched just before the game yesterday. Now would be a good time for a line drive or two, Kyle Seager. I know there’s a big talent gap between AAA and MLB, but this is ridiculous – it’s still baseball, Kyle.

1: Ichiro (DH)
2: Wilson
3: Ackley
4: Carp
5: Wells (RF)
6: Bard
7: Gutierrez
8: Robinson
9: Seager

Why the hell was Kennedy starting at 1B yesterday anyway? I think Carp would have dug out the throw from Seager on the error play.

    Are we second quessing everything?

Perhaps so. Still, it would be nice to see that Eric Wedge has actually noticed that Adam Kennedy has turned back into the over the hill pumpkin that couldn’t get a guaranteed major league contract six months ago, and we’ve got a collection of intriguing young players who should see more playing time on the roster.

Good call on the bunt looked like Seager was a little slow done the line.

This radio announcer sucks. That is all.

Nastiest I’ve seen Felix all year

I try to not get excited about Carp, but man… we may have ourself a cheap DH for the future. That guy can hit.

On a Felix Day to boot. This one’s for the record books.

Can’t blame the offense too much as Santana was simply amazing out there. My (ill-placed???) faith in Mike Carp continues to grow.

This radio announcer sucks. That is all.

I was listening as I was driving when they tried the squeeze. After the play, I kept waiting for him to say whether it was a suicide or safety squeeze.

Several innings later, one of them finally said it was a safety.

EDIT: And now I read on the Times site that it was Wilson’s own idea, not a called play.

Gutierrez – 7 extra base hits for the partial season. DL the guy and send him somewhere to get healthy for crying out loud already.

A sub-.500 OPS in 65 games/217 ABs ought to be enough to convince people he is not well.

G-man: Seager was dead meat. He had a late start since he was obviously surprised. Santana had plenty of time to square up and throw home. The correct play would have been to stay at 3rd, but that would have been hard to do. Ichiro MIGHT have made it.

What are you guys thoughts on Ichiro as a full time DH next year w/ Guti in center, Robinson in right or left(maybee someone more knowledgeable than myself can tell me, does he have a RF arm?) and Wells filling the other corner?

I’m in the pro Prince Fielder camp, but if they don’t sign him (like I said, I’d like to see it, but I also dont think its likely), I think this would be a good fall back plan AND keep Ichiro’s mileage down in the last year of his contract.

Just curious of others thoughts on this…

Robinson may not have a CF arm, he definitely does not have a RF arm.

I don’t think Ichiro as full time DH is a very good idea. He’s either a starter in the field or not worth being in the lineup on a regular basis.

There’s no way a guy of Ichiro’s contract and stature is not playing full time in 2012 if he’s a member of the Seattle Mariners, and the only way he’s not a Mariner is if he decides to call it a career.

Getting Ichiro going in 2012 is going to be critical to the 2012 Mariners.

    So given that…

I’m in the pro Prince Fielder camp, but if they don’t sign him

They won’t sign him. They aren’t going to punt on one of Smoak or Carp, which is what signing Fielder would mean. My guess is the OFers/1B we see on the field today will be the ones who take the field in 2012, barring injury or Ichiro retiring.

    “a line-up that’s pretty much MLB quality”
funniest thing I’ve read in days. many thanks.

You don’t know that. What if they were offered a crazy return for Carp or Smoak? Anything can happen. Even Jack doesn’t know the answers right now, yet alone any of us.
