Jack Wilson –> Atlanta Braves for a PTBNL

Nothing much to say about this deal – the Braves needed a back-up shortstop/late-game defensive replacement for their playoff run, and the M’s needed to stop paying Jack Wilson so much money. A great trade is one that helps both parties, and if you set the bar for ‘help’ low enough, this afterthought of a move might qualify.
Because it happened today, the Braves could add Wilson to their playoff roster, which would be basically OK for them, and unbelievably awesome for Jack Wilson.

The Associated Press reports that the Braves also received cash in the deal, meaning that the Mariners don’t actually get to stop paying Jack Wilson so much money. It’s also the only reason they could possibly get anybody in exchange, middling though that player will undoubtedly be.
Weren’t the Mariners basically paying to free up a spot on the 40 man roster?
By saying the Braves recieved cash, wouldn’t that be AFTER they take Wilson’s salary for the rest of the year?
I mean when you trade Vernon Wells to the Angels, it doesn’t say the Angels paid cash to the Blue Jays. We just all know that the player’s salary is now the responsibility of the new team.
I think the “Mariners sending cash” just means that we’re picking up part of his salary.
Does anyone know how the vernacular works in situations like this, or better yet, know the details of this situation?
The Braves pay Wilson hereafter. The M’s sent them cash to cover some (or all) of that.
The acquiring team automatically pays the player after the trade.
Well put. So the Mariners do get out of some of his salary, unless the cash covers all of it, which we will not know.
This benefits the Ms by allowing them to bring Kelley or Gimenez back onto the 40 man roster. Whatever we get back for Wilson will just be a bonus anyway.
Jack Z getting an extension is more worthy of a post than this….
Jack Wilson’s mom says Hi!
In August, Jack Wilson’s had a .357 OBA. Of course, his BABIP was .433, but hey, maybe he’ll stay hot and get into a post season game and do good.
I might actually watch the Braves in the playoffs, just to see if he gets to play.
It has one now.
Ah, good point. I bet it will be Kelley or some other pitcher who gets the spot. They can use another arm, with Pineda being shut down soon and Furbush pitching like Luke French.
I thought Wilson was on the DL and that you couldn’t trade players on the DL????
Yes, you can trade players on the DL.
It just doesn’t happen often, which is why so many people think that you can’t do it.
Plus, you can’t do it in video games.
