Hernandez vs Darvish, 7:10 pm.
Happy Felix Day!
The pitching match-up is obviously the story here. The M’s did a nice job taking pitches and making Darvish get himself in trouble in their first outing against him, but he’s gotten his command under control over the last few weeks, so they’ll have to get some hits tonight.
Ackley, 2B
Saunders, CF
Ichiro, RF
Seager, 3B
Montero, DH
Smoak, 1B
Jaso, C
Carp, LF
Ryan, SS

Mike Trout just hit an RBI double, and is hitting .354. Hurry back Vernon.
Has Smoak had an opposite field hit yet this season? Has he had an opposite field HR in his ML career?
Exactly, Marcus!
Mike Trout is amazing – I just wish he wasn’t in our division.
Trout is going to play regardless.. It’s more Bourjous that is seeing increased opportunity (which is still a major improvement for them).
Smoak went the other way in Tokyo, Steve.
Yeah, he’s fun to watch. The first game I saw him in, I couldn’t believe his speed.
Really? The HR in Tokyo? I watched that game, and I remember the HR, but I don’t remember it being opposite field.
I was 90% sure it was to the opposite field. Not positive but I sure thought it was.
Bourjous is nearly as interesting as Trout.
What a weird swing by Beltre!
No knee HR for Beltre tonight.
I am wondering about the Cialis commercials. Those middle aged guys and their hot women really need some help?
You’re right Marcus, just saw a clip of it. He pulls the ball SO much, that I couldn’t remember seeing him go the other way.
I love Beltre when he hits like that.
It’s like Miguel Olivo, but with talent.
Yeah, the difference, is that Beltre will make good contact as he puts everything into it.
I truly don’t understand how Wells has been so quickly relegated to the role of “late inning defensive replacement”.

Given that they’re facing all right handed pitchers so far, it makes sense. Carp and Jaso are both better vs RHP than Wells.
Against a LHP you’ve got a better argument for Wells.
Felix!
I think he meant in general, Henry. Wells doesn’t see a lot of playing time even against LHP.
Wow, Saunders nearly pulled that off!
I thought Baker said we had to hit more Homers to start walking?
LOL
I’m sure GB sees the walks tonight as being created by the homers over the past few days.
I’m just predicting his next article, don’t ask me to defend the position cuz I don’t buy it. 😀
Tough luck for Langerhans. Just when he might get some playing time for the Angels, after 2 games and 2 PA, and he separated his shoulder yesterday.
I think the brought Langerhans up when Tori Hunter was put on the restricted list dealing with his sons legal problems.
Jesus!
Monty! Great running by Seager, too!
Oh, Hunter’s out too? I don’t think he’s particularly good anymore, but I didn’t realize the Angels were losing outfielders in bunches.
Poor Ryan Langerhans – I liked the guy.
Actually Hunter’s bat has held up these past few seasons, but he really doesn’t deserve those gold gloves anymore.
Wells doesn’t see a lot of playing time even against LHP.
Fair point. But Casper Wells is basically a known and generally not particularly valuable commodity. Liddi is young and sexy and new, and we want to play with him.
Took them 8 innings to put 1 run on the board. I can live with that.
@Henry
That’s what I don’t get… Wells is young too! Hasn’t been around THAT much longer. And I’d rather see him in left than Liddi, but yeah, I know what you mean. The interest seems to be elsewhere.
Felix!
This may sound like a dumb question, but I honestly don’t know the answer…. is there a stat, comparing PA’s and pitches taken? (average number of pitches in a PA)
I am loving the jawing that Beltre and Felix are doing-they are good friends
Yes ^
Sift through the fan graphs website. It might even be on the mariner team website if you click far enough through it.
I’ve even seen P/PA values on ESPN’s website.
Actually ESPN does a reasonably good job with stats.
OW OW OW OW OW…
Beltre-happy feet!
Hey Wedge…. you think Jaso doesn’t have the “grit” that you think Olivo has?!
Jaso is getting hit in every exposed body part!
That curve is a valuable pitch…
YEAH!!
Great game!
Yu WHO???
Awwright M’s! You’ve climbed out of the cellar! And you’ve got 12 more home than road games on the schedule.
Kyle Seager got 2 walks today!
Darvish did have some control issues – I wonder how much of it was due to his facing such a lefty-dominated lineup?
@Westy
I found the stat I was looking for on ESPN (under expanded stats). Thanks! To my surprise, Figgins has the highest average of P/PA, so I guess that says something about the value of those numbers!
I was curious about Olivo though. His numbers weren’t as bad as I expected, ranking 5th lowest, however, he has the worst BB/PA at .024. So he fouls a lot of pitches, but strikes-out a ton, and doesn’t walk. Nothing we didn’t already know. Bad results regardless of an extra pitch or two. Really hope he doesn’t take away starts from Jaso.
