Game 102, Royals at Mariners
Blake Beavan vs. Jeremy Guthrie, 7:10pm
Today, the Angels acquired Zach Greinke in exchange for young SS Jean Segura, towering RHP prospect Johnny Hellweg and less-towering-but-more-polished RHP prospect Ariel Pena. Tonight, the Mariners take on the Royals in a pitching match-up between a recently demoted guy and a recent DFA candidate cum reclamation “project.” Intellectually, I understand that the Rangers, say, have had fundamentally different objectives requiring different strategies to the M’s these past two years. Today’s dichotomy sort of obliterates that intellectual, rational thinking and leaves me stunned that the Angels and Mariners can be said to be in the same business. Today, Zach Greinke will shake hands with Albert Pujols and Mike Trout in the Angels clubhouse, and today we will watch Jeremy Guthrie pitch to Brendan Ryan. Baseball!
I’ll say this: I’m actually kind of curious to see how the 2012 weird run-dampening park effects deal with Guthrie, and, to a lesser extent, Beavan.
Line-up:
1: Ackley
2: Saunders
3: Montero (DH)
4: Jaso (C)
5: Seager
6: Wells
7: Carp
8: Peguero
9: Ryan
SP: Blake Beavan

Angels have one hell of a rotation now!
It’s very scary.
I just kind of wonder how it is that the Angels, for example, have remained so strong over time. It’s money, obviously, but it’s more than that. The Mariners of the late 1990s saw three massive, MASSIVE superstars of the game leave, and still the team won 116 games in 2001. Perhaps they figured they never had to really work at developing, identifying, and nurturing talent.
As a result, they thought they could sign anyone and the team would win baseball games. Now we’re talking about trading away good players to get players who aren’t terrible … it’s really upsetting.
I wonder also where the coaching gap is. Are the young players in the Angels system all that good? Or are they helped by the right coaches?
With the Rangers, White Sox, and Braves all slobbering over Greinke and missing out on him– plus a lovely gem of baseball pitched last night– Mariner fans should prepare themselves to say the words “thank you” and “good bye” to Jason Vargas. (I would guess the Braves would be interested ’cause Vargas is not a bad hitter as far as pitchers go…)
“Angels have one hell of a rotation now!

And an offense that (theoretically) can hang with Texas and New York, too.
The AL West really IS the new AL East (Rangers=Red Sox, Angels=Evil Empire)… Let’s hurry up with that new TV Deal and join the insanity!
I say we sell the team to Mark Cuban, who’s been flirting with baseball ownership.
The Angel’s payroll is now up to something like $156 million.
BTW I’d previously said I wouldn’t mind seeing Peguero for a while (although I was referring to him at DH). I’m over that now.
Jared Weaver, C.J. Wilson, Dan Haren and now Zack Greinke? IT’S A TRAP!
^HA HA!
Well, at least the Astros are on their way. That has to be good news for everyone … except of course, the Astros.
Nothing changes. Other teams trade to get stronger, the M’s trade to remain mediocre.
Other teams trade for more potential wins, the M’s trade to maintain their austerity.
It’s a philosophical dichotomy. And the fans in Seattle lose. Unless you follow baseball purely for the enjoyment of calculating percentages of success vs. failure given a restricted economy.
What fun!
Hoping we get a good owner if the team is in fact traded. I’ve learned through seattle and minnesta sports fandom a bad owner is the hardest thing to overcome. It’s possible, but an owner willing to spend goes a long way. I’d love to see us get a decent haul for Vargas and have it immediately flipped along with one of our top prospects for Justin Upton. Not sure how true those rumors are, but for the love of god, let’s get Peguero out of there!
I can’t see the Mariners getting anyone of consequence right now – too many teams with playoff aspirations are going after the big impact players. Those guys are even more pricey than usual right now. If we do move anyone, we’ll probably get prospects back.
If they are going to go after an impact, big league player… it’ll happen in the off season.
I am interested in the tmac9311 comment above in regard to if in fact “this team is traded.”
It would certainly be the expeditious route to take. We should have thought of it sooner. Much sooner.
Good night!
The team Took advantage of the bad call with a bloop and a blast!
“Iβd love to see us get a decent haul for Vargas and have it immediately flipped along with one of our top prospects for Justin Upton.”
I don’t get why people want this guy so bad. He’s not that good right now (about as good as what Saunders is doing) and most likely he’s going to end up being an average outfielder like his older brother and we’d have to pay big to get him. Stupid…
How true-Upton is not a player we should be going after
Paguero’s K: he took a pitch 6″ outside for a strike.
Jaso sure can hit righties! If only he wasn’t quite so helpless against lefties…
Guthrie certainly isn’t making much of an argument for himself – his control is absolutely awful.
Works for our guys though!
Justin Upton is a lot more valuable if you don’t restrict yourself to just looking at offensive performance. He’s consistently been a well above average defender, as well as a high on-base guy.
For the right price he’d be a great pickup for the team.
BEAUTIFUL catch by Wells!!
Boy it got quiet in here… is it my breath?
Who HASN’T seen Carlos Peguero swing the bat?
A better question for Alvin Davis would be: “Have you seen Carlos Peguero take a ball?”
The acoustics are pretty good in here – maybe I’ll try out a medley of my favorite tunes…
Ackley again!
It is great to see him hitting! Okay, it’s against KC, but still…
I only get to “see” through Gamecast, but it’s good Beavan got out of that jam.
(I’m a lurker, but geez, the echo was getting to me.)
Well that inning went to hell quickly. Seager complained about a strike two call earlier and everything he has seen since is being called a strike
They picked a non TV day for the Randy and Dan induction ceremony? What!?
Leave it to Beavan has six strikeouts through 5 1/3? You’re kidding.
Sweet!
WOW! I was happy when we demoted Smoak, but wasn’t too thrilled that Carp was taking his place. These past few days have made me more optimistic though. Maybe the Carp from last year is still hanging around.
If Ryan got to see more KC pitching, he’d be on the right side of the Mendoza line.
To be honest, we haven’t seen Carp since Japan, when he crashed into the wall. Little chance of that at First Base! If the team continues to hit well, both at home and away the next 2 weeks, it’ll be all Ichiro’s fault. That pesky “chemistry” of the clubhouse thing…
I want Carp to do well – but remember, the first two games at KC people were talking about how Smoak may have figured it out…
I am glad to have Carp at 1B right now, in any case.
And this surprises you how, exactly, Mike? π
Actually, I didn’t realize ROOT was sponsoring the Randy/Dan bobblehead. So yeah… an even bigger promotion screw-up than usual.
At least Randy and Dan are in town for the promotion…
Even with the perspective, the pitcher looks shorter than Condor!
… but the little guy beat him.
Herrera’s listed as 5-10 – I’m not buying it.
Stay away from Upton… It’s a trap!
Why is it that Jack in the Box always chooses to put ads aimed at stoners on Mariner broadcasts? Is it that they figure that that’s what it takes to cheer for this team?
Well it is the beautiful and green northwest. I’m sure Wilhelmson loves Jack in the Box… especially when he’s stoned π
Hey it’s gonna be Brandon League! The ninth inning may be a lot more eventful than we might have expected!
Hahaha, that went through my mind too ^^
Hey, that was easier than I expected!
Jaso was a great addition to the team.
I’m glad we’re getting to see Jaso on a regular basis now.
It’s always entertaining to see the drunks behind the guys doing the end-of-game broadcast out by The Pen.
I’m waiting for the two Jack in the Box stoners to show up back there.
If that happens, I’d pay money if a guy wearing a Jack in the Box head would walk over and punch them out.
Was at the Rainiers game today, and it was INCREDIBLE. It had the feeling of a normal M’s game (no runs, no extra base hits, generally boring), and then with 2 outs in the 9th, Liddi takes a walk after being down 0-2. Then Luis Rodriguez pulled one just over the wall (maybe by less than a foot) to win it.
Oh, and Luis Jimenez and Justin Smoak both looked horrible to make the first two outs of the inning.
Man, second awesome game I’ve been to this week!
