A Farm System Podcast, with Jay!
Matthew Carruth · May 15, 2013 at 9:41 pm · Filed Under Mariners
Jeff was otherwise occupied, but I wrangled Jay (aka JY) into my digital audio lair and held him hostage to talk about the minors. We touch on both a high level overview of the minor league philosophy of the Mariners and their player development and also get into some specific player details. I hope you enjoy.

Hell yea. I used to read Jay’s informative and whimsical write-ups at Mariners Minors. Good times.
Also, Jay sounds a bit like Jeff.
I either have a mechanical keyboard or was working on my tap routine.

Cool – something fun for tomorrow’s train/bus ride
Thanks guys!
Listening to the podcast now….miss the Monday morning write ups…
Good to hear you Jay! (and Matthew)
Also miss the monday morning write ups!
Any thoughts on where Luiz Gohara will start? will they be agressive like with Victor Sanchez and assign him to Everett?
Dylan Unsworth, had a good year last year but has cut down the walks this year. is he turning into a good prospect ?
Oops, already discussed Unsworth in the podcast.
Great podcast! Nice to hear from Jay Y and get his take on so many prospects and maybe prospects. I miss those incredible minor league summaries… Well done Matthew.
I have to say Jay’s voice sounds different than I would have expected. Much deeper than Jeff or Matthew. I like the idea of an occasional minor league podcast. Thanks!
This was great. Keep up the good work guys.
I could see him in Everett. I don’t see any reason not to put him there, unless he’s not healthy, in which case they can’t play him anywhere.
You think I sound different to you? Think of how I sound to me! Friggin’ ear bones and small vibrations allowing us to hear ourselves, make me sound to others like I think I sound when I talk!
Why isn’t Rich Poythress ever considered a “prospect”? He seems to hit well and have a good K/BB rate.
Welcome back, Jay. USSM is the blogging dream team
Thanks for the podcast. I was a little surprised that you guys didn’t talk about Hultzen, Walker and Paxton, but maybe that’s for another time. BTW, whatever happened to Cavan Cohoes, the American who grew up in Germany? How’s he doing?
Someday maybe in a future podcast, you guys could talk about possible trades the Mariners could make.
Matthew and Jay,
That was really awesome guys. I really liked the dive into the minors players, and you guys have a good back and forth. Jay, your voice sounds a lot like Jeff’s.
Because outside of the thirty-one dingers in High Desert, he’s a first baseman who has never hit more than eleven home runs in a year and repeatedly struggled in double-A?
I had him on my watch list after last season because he had seventeen more walks than strikeouts. In some cases, hitters who have started to walk a lot develop power a year or two after, but now he’s at 81.8% of last year’s walk totals in 36.6% of the at-bats. He’s started to do better in May, but his plate discipline in April was nothing special. It’s not exactly a mystery as to why he hasn’t been a top prospect.
I’m older than him and I had a voice first!
chris taylor? ss otf?
It could happen. If his numbers hold up. He’s not LH like Miller and I don’t know if his bat will continue being this good, but he’s the more polished defender.
Hi, thanks for the podcast. Are you concerned about Morban’s aggressiveness, and what would you suggest is a realistic timetable for his promotion to Tacoma? If Seattlle continues to hover near .500 this season, do they promote Franklin and boot Andino and rotate among Franklin, Ackley, and Ryan? Finally, have you heard anything about Cavan Cohoes? I see Lopes forced his way into Clinton’s lineup, but nothing from Cohoes.
Not really. If he had a poor idea of the strike zone, it might be more problematic, but he’s making one of the more difficult jumps in the minor leagues and the only thing I’d be mildly concerned with now is that he isn’t walking so much. This is a guy who has had all of 218 games in the minor leagues over four years coming into the season, there’s no reason to promote him now.
It could happen, or they could just trade everyone for a short-term solution to try to push us over the top and… (breaks down into tears)
Well, he’s played all of two games in the minor leagues so far. I don’t know what’s going on with him or why he played so little last year, but I also don’t know why you’d expect him with a full season club when he has minimal pro experience and wasn’t playing in a particularly competitive environment previously.
