    Done and done!

Pre-ordered. Impressed with the cheap shipping to Canada ($5), came out to $20 CDN Total, very nice. Looking forward to reading it.

Their server appears to be down, so I will ask here: will they ship to England?

When I clicked on the link, I am getting this error:

Clicked the link and got “The web site you are accessing has experienced an unexpected error. Please contact the website administrator.” Perhaps the server is overwhelmed?

    We broke it again.

  9. tgf on January 12th, 2010 1:32 pm

Ah, I see……. it’s like 10 people trying to get in a Volkswagen Bug at the same time.

At least when USSM/LL rush the checkout they don’t trample any poor minimum-wage employees underfoot.

I do all my e-shopping in the middle of the night in my pjs. Better for everybody.

Buy early, buy often, buy lots.

But not too early. Won’t someone please think of the servers?

  12. JZR on January 12th, 2010 1:44 pm

Is this print to order, or is there a chance of selling out?

  13. jld on January 12th, 2010 1:46 pm

Are these expected to be hard to come by? I’d prefer to pick one up at a local bookseller, but I don’t want to miss out by not pre-ordering and then not being able to find one.

Edit: Thanks for the edit button!

  14. BrianV on January 12th, 2010 1:47 pm

    Ordered, can’t wait!

  15. Mustard on January 12th, 2010 1:50 pm

I just ordered it. Cheap shipping to Canada.

If you want to buy local, you should be able to.

Only bought one, but at least I fulfilled ‘buy early’.

  19. Jake N. on January 12th, 2010 2:11 pm

Very excited to read this annual. Just off hand what is the circulation size you are shooting for first print? 5k-20k?

  20. vj on January 12th, 2010 2:25 pm

My order’s in. Can’t wait to read it. Here’s hoping, next year’s edition has the following chapter: How the Mariners made it to the World Series.

@Englishmariner: They ship to Europe, a little expensive, though (US-$ 12.00).

    Happy to support.

I’ve placed my order; I would’ve liked to have saved the shipping costs by waiting until it hits bookstores, but living in Southern California I doubt it’ll be on the bookshelves here. I suppose I could’ve special-ordered it through a bookstore, but that typically takes a long time. This way I’ll be the first on my block to get one!

That’s proprietary data of Maple Street Press, and I doubt Dave would know except in the most general way (unless the authors are getting paid per book sold, which is extremely unlikely). And to the extent he does know, he may not be at liberty to say. Publishers are amazingly tight-lipped about this sort of thing — I know authors who have no real idea of how well their books actually sold, beyond “it was enough to justify a paperback reissue” or whatever. Still, I agree it would be great to know in general terms (and how this pre-order surge compares to sales through traditional outlets, how well the sales went in comparison to their projections, etc). I just wouldn’t expect to get much more than the most general idea.

Two copies ordered. Pleasantly surprised with the reasonable postage costs to the UK.

  27. Chris_From_Bothell on January 12th, 2010 5:02 pm

A copy of this, signed by all the contributors, might make a lovely charity auction item. Just a thought.

  28. behappy on January 12th, 2010 5:20 pm

I just wanted to say THANK YOU DAVE! For putting all this together.

Another thing I have noticed is how many Mariner Fan’s there are around the globe. I think that is pretty neat.

  29. SeasonTix on January 12th, 2010 6:08 pm

Ordered mine … look forward to it!

  30. peterp16 on January 12th, 2010 6:11 pm

The shipping costs per book go down nicely for multiple book orders — to WA state, $5/1 book, $6/2 books. Might as well take Dave’s advice and place a big order. 🙂

  31. Breadbaker on January 12th, 2010 7:23 pm

    Two books ordered.

If this keeps up, they may have to alter their print run. Nothing could be nicer.

Heck, it doesn’t need to be a charity. You could have the proceeds go to the USSM servers and I doubt anyone would complain.

I know authors who have no real idea of how well their books actually sold, beyond “it was enough to justify a paperback reissue” or whatever.

This sounds odd. Don’t the royalty earnings of writers depend on book sales? For the book I co-authored*, I get an update on the sales every six months.

    * FWIW, it is a book about law rather than sports or fiction and it was not published in the US.

Shipping to Mexico is more expensive than the book itself…

Yes, once they’ve cleared their advance. Lots of authors never do. And even those that do tend to have only a rough idea of total sales (the contract may pay based on passing certain shipment thresholds rather than a flat per-book; and books often get “remaindered” or returned from retailers, muddying things further). It depends on the contract, and at best you won’t know until six months down the road.

Which is why so many authors find themselves addicted to the Amazon sales numbers, because not only is it updated more or less in real time, but it’s a real number (albeit one that reflects just one outlet that may not be representative of the market as a whole). The publisher doesn’t have data like that (they may know what they shipped out, but they have no idea of sell-through vs remaindered), which is why they operate on six month time scales.

Anyway we don’t know what kind of contract Dave and the authors might have had — it could be a straight work-for-hire, with no per-unit royalties, and thus no information about sales even six months later.

It would be interesting to hear some details about this. I think if people knew who benefited from each sale and to what extent, it might influence how many copies are purchased. For instance, someone might choose to purchase a copy for themselves, but additional copies as gifts if it benefited the site significantly. Just a thought.

It’s pretty unusual in the publishing industry to provide authors with much in the way of sales breakdowns. That may not be a very satisfactory state of affairs for many, but it remains common practice.

  40. joser on January 13th, 2010 7:53 pm

Yeah. The publishing industry as a whole doesn’t just keep writers in the dark, it’s right in there with them without a candle. Most houses couldn’t provide better data to their authors even if they wanted to, and of course they don’t want to. I have some journalist friends in NY who have written books, and one of them said something like, “The newspapers may be horse-and-buggy these days, but the book publishers are still chiseling wheels out of stone.” And that’s why so many of them look at the Kindle like it’s some kind of witch.

Of course Maple Street Press is a little different animal — they seem to be more like a specialty magazine publisher doing these one-off annual pubs — but again it all comes back to what their contract with Dave obligates them to do in terms of sharing information (and, for that matter, what the contract allows Dave to say about it also).

Probably the biggest indicator of the numbers at least meeting their expectations is if they ask him (and the other writers) to do it again. Though given the amount of work that was apparently involved (and the number of other irons he has the fire), there’s no certainty he’d say yes.

Then again, maybe he’ll be busy working on the World Series Commemorative Issue instead. 😉

Mariner Annual ordered and I’m looking forward to some quality pre-season reading. I’ve also ordered one for my brother. Thanks to Dave for putting this together.

In reviewing other comments, it looks like there are enough M’s fans in the UK to start a movement!

I’m going to buy mine in a retail store. I want stores to know about it (and I want stores to stay in business).

Ordered mine today. Shipping to Italy not too expensive at all.
