Mariner Annual Pre-Orders Now Available

The 2010 Mariner Annual, announced yesterday, is now available for pre-order from the Maple Street Press store. As noted on the page, the magazine will ship on February 17th if ordered directly from MSP, and will be in retail stores on March 2nd.
Buy early, buy often, buy lots.

Pre-ordered. Impressed with the cheap shipping to Canada ($5), came out to $20 CDN Total, very nice. Looking forward to reading it.

Are these expected to be hard to come by? I’d prefer to pick one up at a local bookseller, but I don’t want to miss out by not pre-ordering and then not being able to find one.

I’ve placed my order; I would’ve liked to have saved the shipping costs by waiting until it hits bookstores, but living in Southern California I doubt it’ll be on the bookshelves here. I suppose I could’ve special-ordered it through a bookstore, but that typically takes a long time. This way I’ll be the first on my block to get one!

That’s proprietary data of Maple Street Press, and I doubt Dave would know except in the most general way (unless the authors are getting paid per book sold, which is extremely unlikely). And to the extent he does know, he may not be at liberty to say. Publishers are amazingly tight-lipped about this sort of thing — I know authors who have no real idea of how well their books actually sold, beyond “it was enough to justify a paperback reissue” or whatever. Still, I agree it would be great to know in general terms (and how this pre-order surge compares to sales through traditional outlets, how well the sales went in comparison to their projections, etc). I just wouldn’t expect to get much more than the most general idea.

The shipping costs per book go down nicely for multiple book orders — to WA state, $5/1 book, $6/2 books. Might as well take Dave’s advice and place a big order. 🙂

This sounds odd. Don’t the royalty earnings of writers depend on book sales? For the book I co-authored*, I get an update on the sales every six months.
* FWIW, it is a book about law rather than sports or fiction and it was not published in the US.

Yes, once they’ve cleared their advance. Lots of authors never do. And even those that do tend to have only a rough idea of total sales (the contract may pay based on passing certain shipment thresholds rather than a flat per-book; and books often get “remaindered” or returned from retailers, muddying things further). It depends on the contract, and at best you won’t know until six months down the road.
Which is why so many authors find themselves addicted to the Amazon sales numbers, because not only is it updated more or less in real time, but it’s a real number (albeit one that reflects just one outlet that may not be representative of the market as a whole). The publisher doesn’t have data like that (they may know what they shipped out, but they have no idea of sell-through vs remaindered), which is why they operate on six month time scales.
Anyway we don’t know what kind of contract Dave and the authors might have had — it could be a straight work-for-hire, with no per-unit royalties, and thus no information about sales even six months later.
It would be interesting to hear some details about this. I think if people knew who benefited from each sale and to what extent, it might influence how many copies are purchased. For instance, someone might choose to purchase a copy for themselves, but additional copies as gifts if it benefited the site significantly. Just a thought.
It’s pretty unusual in the publishing industry to provide authors with much in the way of sales breakdowns. That may not be a very satisfactory state of affairs for many, but it remains common practice.
Yeah. The publishing industry as a whole doesn’t just keep writers in the dark, it’s right in there with them without a candle. Most houses couldn’t provide better data to their authors even if they wanted to, and of course they don’t want to. I have some journalist friends in NY who have written books, and one of them said something like, “The newspapers may be horse-and-buggy these days, but the book publishers are still chiseling wheels out of stone.” And that’s why so many of them look at the Kindle like it’s some kind of witch.
Of course Maple Street Press is a little different animal — they seem to be more like a specialty magazine publisher doing these one-off annual pubs — but again it all comes back to what their contract with Dave obligates them to do in terms of sharing information (and, for that matter, what the contract allows Dave to say about it also).
Probably the biggest indicator of the numbers at least meeting their expectations is if they ask him (and the other writers) to do it again. Though given the amount of work that was apparently involved (and the number of other irons he has the fire), there’s no certainty he’d say yes.
Then again, maybe he’ll be busy working on the World Series Commemorative Issue instead. 😉
