Game 22, Mariners at Royals
Rowland-Smith vs Meche, 11:10 am.
Hyphen takes the hill trying to get the team back to .500. He could use a good performance, as this hasn’t been his finest month. At least he won’t be seeing an all RHB line-up for a change. Also, the Royals double play combo today: Bloomquist and Betancourt. Yep.
For the M’s line-up, Sweeney is the DH and hitting 6th. At least he’s behind Milton, but ahead of Kotchman against an RHP? I sense at least one soul crushing double play.
Ichiro, RF
Figgins, 2B
Gutierrez, CF
Lopez, 3B
Bradley, LF
Mascot, DH
Kotchman, 1B
Johnson, C
Wilson, SS

The Baker blog thing is now a Fight Club topic. If you want to know the details just use the email link to ask (or have a look at Lookout Landing for the Fanpost relating to Baker smoking crack). Posts about it just get deleted (as I expect this one will be).
A couple more runs would be nice.
yeah definitely a 5
Kotchman in one of the interviews said that from where he stands on the field it looks like Wilson doesn’t catch balls, he just deflects them to first base. In the same way that Beltre was the Baryshnikov of that bare-handed fall-away throw, Wilson is the wizard of that deep-in-the-hole catch-and-throw.
Yuni watches it go by and shrugs. The sooner the game is over, the sooner he gets back to the buffet.
Guti cools down a little bit.
Golden sombrero for Guti.
Two of them were looking, though. Another a foul tip.
Call it a man crush if you want, but I can find things positive about that!
Totally. I’d be there.
Or a drunken polar bear derby on St. Patrick’s day…
Guti with the Golden Sombrero.

Had to happen at some point. At least we’ve scored 6 on a day where he struggles.
Baker had a rambling parody post a few days ago which included some cheap shots at-length at one of USSM’s founders. Said parody post was not even 2 or 3 days after an emotional farewell by said founder from the blog to move on to other things with his life. Coupled with Baker’s attitude around his lack of HoF vote for Edgar, that was the last straw.
BTW, Niehaus going for the tutu is the best thing he’s said since the rye bread and mustard.
Hold on time.
This has to be the easiest 1-run save opportunity coming up: Mitch Maier, Bloomquist, and Betancourt.
not sure which is more senile…wilson in a tu tu, or the diabolical slider from spring training that brock and salk keep replaying. thanks for the explanation on a certain seattle baseball writers blog status here @ USSM. I’m trying to track down the power hitting minor leaguer that they are talking about on the radio broadcast. Is he in our system? who is it?
If you jinx it, I’ll be pissed.
Are they talking about Alex Liddi?
Is an inning-ending DP, with the bases loaded, in the 9th inning, in a 1-run game, enough reason to get rid of Sweeney?
Can they just “forget” to let him know when the bus leaves for home? KC can have him back…
My leash on Griffey is short, but I think I’ve pretty much taken the collar off Sweeney and told him to run away forever.
There is no such thing as an “easy” save opportunity with Aardsma.
I missed it. Was it a blog post, or a comment?
I’ve never quite understood why Geoff acts the way he does in the comments section over there. Really unbecoming of a professional.
Jinxes are ridiculous.
Carlos Peguero?
So in that AB, with the bases loaded, and lots of KC history, Sweeney has the chance to remind the fans why he was pretty good once. Instead, he grounds out to Second. Allow me to not be the first to say: “thanks for everything”, and I hope for the sake of the team, that you’re not on the roster in two days.
Yuni working the count??????
.500 wooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!
Thanks, Yuni!
D.A.!
Yuni at 3-1 is almost guaranteed to swing.
True to form, Yuni swung at ball 4.
So nice to see Willie and Yuni up with the game on the line and not have it be for us
11-11 with Lee and Felix on tap at home. Aaaaaaaaahh.
Back to .500, Cliff Lee pitching Friday and Nelson Cruz is on the DL. Things are looking up!
Hahahaha Betancourt K’d on ball 4. I’m much more content with Jack Wilson at SS.
6 runs wow! Oh-happy-day! (jubilant sarcasm)
Being at 500 feels good with Cliff and Felix days coming up at home!!!
Sarcasmificate all you want, but these M’s will win at least 8 of every 10 games in which they score six times or more.
I know we’re still in the “small sample size theater” point in the season, but I have to wonder how long Casey Kotchman and his robust slugging numbers are going to be hitting in the bottom of the order.
As far as I’m concerned, as long as Dave Niehaus paints his play-by-plays with evocative descriptions and unique sobriquets, all in that wonderful avuncular voice, he can say whatever crazy thing pops into his head. His eyes may be failing him and his attention may not be quite as sharp as it once was, but nothing has dulled the color of his language, and it’s a privilege and pleasure to listen to it. It’ll be a sad day when we have nothing on the radio but Simms and Rizzs and Blowers. Enjoy it before it’s gone.
But they’re fun. At least while the game is on. After the game is over, or before it starts, that kind of magical thinking is annoying and wrong and leads to lost seasons and Bill Bavasi trades. But during games, you can pretend to believe as many as six impossible things before breakfast.
I’d be encouraged by the offensive output if most of it didn’t come against the horrific KC bullpen.
And they’ll win 10 of every 10 in which they score more than the other team.
Well Wak went into the season talking about having him bat 3rd, and then backed off from that. Certainly it would help to have him bunched up with the other guys who are actually hitting, but the problem is that most of those guys are also LH, which makes the lineup vulnerable to a LOOGY in the late innings. That’s (one of the reasons) why keeping Milton healthy and in the lineup is so crucial.
Joser – I agree with you in regards to Mr. Niehaus. How he paints a baseball game so elloquently will be sorely missed when he does retire. No one can do the Mariners justice like Mr. Niehaus does. Certainly not Simms, Rizz and Blowers.
I am very glad to be @ .500. It will make the next homestand seem so much nicer once we get Lee rolling and King Felix another W.
Go M’s!
Does Sweeney still have a house in Kansas City? Maybe they could tell him he had to attend to some urgent yardwork or something and then jump on the plane without him.
Yes, Carlos Peguero had a good day
Kirby Arnold mentioned him recently also. And of course there are regular minors reports by JY here at USSM.
2009 Mariners went 33-6 when scoring six runs or more and 23-3 when scoring seven times or more. It IS a big deal.
(33-6 is an .846 winning percentage. You’re welcome.)
Joser, if they did that to Mike Sweeney, he’d still show up at the game covered in sweat, and be all,
” Aw, you got me good that time!”
