Lee vs Garza, 10:40 am.
Junior returns to the line-up. It’s anyone’s guess as to why.
Moore to 15 day DL, Bedard to 60 day DL, Bard to the majors.
Ichiro, RF
Figgins, 2B
Gutierrez, CF
Lopez, 3B
Griffey, DH
Kotchman, 1B
Josh Wilson, SS
Bard, C
Saunders, LF
Yeah, frustrations aside, the organization is now generally accumulating talent instead of pissing it away.
Why bother?
Why aren’t we pinch hitting Sweeney?

I’d rather have Adam Carolla if we’re talking about radio celebs managing our team. At least he knows a little about baseball.
Game Over
I think Figgins may still be working for the Angels.
Because that would have made too much sense. Maybe his back is sore from hitting all of those home runs…
I’ll third that as well…but, hey, I guess those two quality starts out of twenty were well worth it in the eyes of Billy B.!
Wow, absolutely unbelievable that Ms dont pinch hit for Bard. What in the eff is Wak thinking? He is struggling as much as the hitters !
Wak needs fired. These players don’t need an advocate.
Well, Rob Johnson’s back is apparently hurting and Bard was hitting . . . .500!!!
Really? Figgins is a baseball player, subject to slumps and hot streaks like everyone else. You quoted his yearly salary but are judging him on six weeks’ work. Think again.
6 weeks is not a slump. I can put up with a couple weeks but not 6. Are you really defending his play?
Chone Figgins needs to sit his ass on the bench for a full week.
Dammit, this muppet babies offense of ours kills me. Opposing pitchers must just laugh when they get our lineup card.
The Mariners will be okay as soon as we get some offensive production out of the catching position … and 1st base … and 2nd base … and 3rd base … and shortstop … and left field … and DH.
I like Adam Carolla a lot better…plus, you would’ve always gotten a good interview out of him, too!
Well, we could hope for a Cleveland style rant…
Still we somehow ended up only 5 1/2 back after this series.
Nine 1 run losses this year. Pitching is great, hitting is poo
Lee throws 8 innings, gives up 2 runs on 5 hits and gets the loss. If I were him I would be begging to be traded.
Don’t forget about the 10 K’s.

SODOMOJO360: You called it a slump; see your original post.
Pointing out that players go through boom-and-bust cycles independent of salary is not the same as defending his play.
If anyone knows a smarter version of Lou Pinella out there that could be our manager, give Armstrong a call.
@MarinerFanMike03
Seriously dude? Since your apparently smarter than the rest of us, why dont you enlighten us with the “upside” of securing third base in that situation. As a general baseball rule to make the third out attempting to gain third base is a garbage play. Period.
Yeah, what a waste of a great performance…thanks a lot, lineup! >:(
I feel so bad for Lee and the situation he was put in. From World Series contender to bottom of the barrel with one of if not the worst offense in baseball. I am honestly embarrassed by the type of hitting the M’s exhibit day in and day out. Trade Lee to a contender and garner some hitting prospects in return, he doesn’t deserve this.
Well I guess we can start speculating what players we can get in a Cliff Lee trade. Not a chance he is a Mariner on Aug 1st ! We will be lucky to win 70 games with this dog shit offense that Jack Z and Wak throw out there.
Any news on Bradley?
Bradley is a cancer to this roster, that’s the latest news on him.
They were 35-20 in one-run games last year. So they have some distance to go before the full reversal is complete.
He should be back in our next homestand.
I’m sure Cliff’s gonna have one of those “win or trade me to someone who can” talks with Z/Wak after this game. Tough to blame the guy. . .
One thing that should be noted in spite of these last two bad beats is we’re still only 5.5 games back, Texas got swept by Toronto, and Oakland has lost 4 in a row and are losing again today. The whole AL West sucks, which does give us a little bit of hope.
Yah Jack Z sure looks like a genius now doesnt he? What a pathetic lineup and bullpen.
I’m not a frequent poster, but I’m a loyal M’s fan.
This team is laughable. The pitching is as good as it’s ever been save for RRS and a couple of stiffs in the pen.
The offense however is deplorable. Ich is hitting, Gutz is hitting, but everyone else is a joke. No apparent reason as to why a career .290 hitter like Figgins is struggling so bad. Kotch can hit but isn’t, Bradley can hit, but wasn’t and then lost his head (like we all thought he might) However, I still make that deal taking Bradley instead of Silva in the AL. Jack Wilson is a glovesmith, but is made of glass and can’t hit his weight. Lopez is mediocre at best. We should’ve “sold high” on Lopez last year. I like Langerhans but he’s a solid 4th OFer. Saunders looks like he might be onto something, and deserves to be the starting LFer with Bradley at DH when he returns.
Griffey…. Love him… He’s done. Retire Gracefully.
I think we need to look into trading Lee now. We’re likely to get more in return for him now than at the deadline. More starts equal more prospects, and Z can evaluate good Minor League talent. I don’t expect any productive veterans in a deal for Lee. More like a package like we gave up for him in the first place.
Just so disappointing for a life-long fan.

I meant that 6 weeks is BEYOND a slump and should not be defended.
Great post cjudnich
This M’s team reminds me of the 2003 Dodgers, except that we don’t have Eric Gagne in his prime.
It is fair to question whether Cliff Lee will be here next year, but it is silly to believe that he has never been in a situation that was disappointing.
Lee was first drafted by the hapless Orioles in ’98, but he did not sign. He was later chosen in the 4th round in 2000 and inked a contract with the soon to be homeless Expos. Lee was traded to the Indians in a big blockbuster deal two years later. None of these teams were inspiring destinations for a young arm.
Cliff Lee made the big club in 2002, but did not win his 4th major league game until 2005. From 2002 to 2008, Cleveland went 570-564 with one playoff run, two winning seasons and three seasons of 78 wins or less. Lee had a career high 22 wins in a year when the whole team only won 81 games. On the other hand, he won only 5 games the year they went to the ALCS.
Cliff Lee might be bummed out that things are going the way that they are this season, but he is not a stranger to the cruel whims of the baseball gods.
Should read: but did not win his 4th major league game until 2004.
cjudnich, I don’t disagree with anything you wrote – except I seem to recall several “hot stove” articles implying that Jack Z was attempting to shop Lopez over the winter but didn’t get any nibbles. The other teams apparently aren’t any higher on Lopez than we are.
If he was hitting this year, we’d probably have some luck trading him – given his current defensive play.
Fair point. I heard those “rumors” too.
Actually I recall thinking the same thing this past offseason. You gotta think there had to be some “older-school” non-sabermetric GM’s who liked him….. right? Guess not. Maybe that was another reason we moved him to 3B? As a second baseman his offensive stats didn’t outweigh his defensive shortcomings. As a Third baseman, “Joey-the-Butcher” doesn’t require as much range and the stats profile more like a league average 3B.
Now we’re screwed… no way to move him, for anything, unless he hits.
