M’s Select RHP Tyler Burgoon for #312
I said I’d be around for ten rounds and we’re obviously getting into territory not as interesting to people who are not me. Burgoon is a right-hander out of U Michigan. Unlike the other guys selected thus far, he’s not a big Goon, in fact he’s under 5’10, but he throws low-90s and has managed to get up to 95 a time or two with some natural tail away from right-handers, and complements the heater with a great slider. Some outlets had him as a potential top 200 player here. Size and his probable future as a reliever is probably what allowed him to drop this far. If he does stay in the ‘pen, he’s another candidate to move fast. There’s a lot to be intrigued by there.

Jay, how many rounds are there total? I should know this but yeah no one pays much attention after the first ten rounds or so…
Fifty. Fifty rounds of non-stop thrills.
Today must be like Christmas for you Jay. I love the draft, I’m very excited.
Question though, I know you said your stopping after round 10. But, after the draft is over will you or are you going to do a recap to give us a bit of information on the guys drafted in the late rounds? Just for those of us that are not as well read on the players as yourself. I’m just interested in seeing what your opinion of the draft is overall. Thanks for the updates BTW.
Awesome work, Jay. You know I’m a fan. Pardon me as I proceed to recite “Littlewood,Stanek,Paxton- oh my!” in my living room and do some kind of impromptu jig.
The Pryor and Blash tabs are intriguing to me, as well. But it’s those three in the recital that I think I’d hedge my bets on making this a good draft class.
Picking up where Jay is going to leave off (sans expert commentary), in the 11th round at pick #342 the M’s continue with the big pitcher plan, taking a 6-6 205 lb RH HS pitcher out of Iowa (which, following Jay’s comments about the M’s scouting proficiency in the midwest, is probably a good thing)named Jon Keller. Video here.
Thanks everyone. I’m trying to liveblog the rest at my own site, so you can check out the commentary there should I have any.
I’ll come back with a wrap of day two if I can later in the evening. Everything is rapid fire right now, so I’m barely having time to look into guys, research, and do write-ups before the next pick is already made.
You knew I was on Littlewood, from the beginning. That swing has potential for some serious beauty.
Paxton? A lefty starter who sits at 94 when healthy, has no leverage to speak of? Everything is a gamble, but the payoff could be SO huge on this.
And, with pick # 372 in the 12th round, the Mariners take 6-2, 215 lb R/R 3B Stefan Romero out of Oregon State. Video here.
Stefen Romero is this year’s Vinnie Catricala.
I didn’t really sleep last night, so it’s a start.
Today will be fueled by adrenaline, and later, frozen pizza.
Wouldn’t it be better if you nuked it?
With the 402nd pick, in the 13th round, the Mariners take 6-3 195 lb seniro LHP Jason Markovitz out of Cal State-Long Beach.
Yuck. No, I’ll be using the oven for it.
Markovitz is a situational reliever with weak command, but a fair amount of strikeouts.
With pick # 432, the Mariners tap 6-0, 240 lb (!) HS pitcher Tyler Linehan, out of Shelden HS in California.
Linehan broke his school’s strikeout record, twice, and has thrown two no-hitters. Two-way player, better as a pitcher. Missed time with a knee injury earlier in the year, which probably caused him to slip. Conditioning might help?
Linehan’s not that common of a name. Any relation to the NFL coach, Scott?
I seem to remember the name Jordan Shipers…difficult sign that we’re taking a chance on?
Shipers is going to be a tough sign because he’s thought to have a strong commitment to Missouri State. He’s an undersized lefty who throws hard, but with max effort. It’s a risk on a few fronts.
Kind of a Walker Kelly type. Hmm. Be interesting if they have a chance to make that gas come easier, without reliance on an all-guns-blazing delivery.
That’s a good rough comp for him. Hopefully he has a better chance of signing.
Might be this year’s version of Scott Griggs for the Mariners- the prep arm better regarded than the round taken would indicate, unable to be signed.
If he is signed, are we that much more excited? I haven’t seen one iota of Shipers on video.
That’s an enormous if. I don’t expect him to, though we could probably put in a better offer than Missouri State. It may be a hometown thing if it comes to it. The Griggs situation is a nice parallel for it.
Hometown consideration…true, this. Don’t ever underestimate southern pride, especially those from Missouri regions. The chance to play for local top colleges there can be a bit differently regarded than, say, a kid from Modesto with a chance to play at Cal State Fullerton.
I know virtually nil about Lopez, Kesler and Christian- but at 5’10”, Christian sounds like a lefty speed merchant.
Well, we’re certainly not shying away from non-traditional body-types in pitching, at least.
Under and over-sized lefties in Shipers and Linehan, undersized righties in Burgoon, Kesler and Bischoff and a moose of a dude in Pryor.
