Jay on KGA

Jay Yencich · June 9, 2010 at 4:05 pm · Filed Under Minor Leagues

I’ll be making my radio debut this afternoon on Spokane’s 1510 KGA around 5:15 pm, talking about the draft as I am wont to do. Tune in, if you will, but I must warn you beforehand that I don’t speak nearly as fast as Dave does.

Few of us do. If there were a way to gauge speed of words, Dave wouldn’t need the fast JUGS gun to impress.

The fellow whose name escaped you on-air was Anthony Rendon, I believe.

    I didn’t talk fast. But I talked a lot.

    Yup, that’s the one.

I wish we didn’t have Anthony Renaudo in the same draft because that was really screwing me up.

Jay, do you know much about this 49th-round pick of ours, Colton Keough? Major-league bloodlines, but is he one’a those “strong commits” to college?

Just asking because it’s not uncommon for teams- and us- to take stabs at difficult signs in very late rounds. Walker Kelly (50th round) in 2008, for one.

Rendon’s got the bat speed to be a beast in the big leagues. And the size. Oh, and he eats a baseball for breakfast. Definition of a baseball rat, from what one of my friends tell me who follows Rice baseball.

Shane Keough’s little brother, yes. I don’t know his commitments yet, but I’d think that he’s not an easy sign, as players of his type generally do a lot better after some time in college and I can’t imagine the family needs the money.

We also had bloodlines with our last pick of Dave Holman, Brian’s son.

*obligatory OHMYGOD I SOUND LIKE THAT?*

    Thanks, boss.

Isn’t it a trip to hear your voice the way it actually sounds to others?

Audio engineering days were loaded for me with those discoveries…”That was great! Wasn’t it?”

“Um, not terrible, but no, not really great. Listen.”

    They listen.

    “OHMYGOD I SOUND LIKE THAT?”

I’m aware that I come off with a bit of a monotone; my friends have teased me about it. Something I’ll have to work on in future appearances.

Also it’s Yen-sitch, but I didn’t have the heart to correct them because I was pretty happy they didn’t think the first c was silent like a lot of people apparently do.

Three quadruple lattés beforehand will help set the pace next time.

Actually, you don’t have THAT much of a monotone- have you ever heard Jim Callis?? Yikes.

Listening to Callis makes me want to chuck hard objects at little animals and windows. I’ll take listening to you any day.

I once had a friend with the last name “Plancich”, who pronounced it “PLAN-sitch”, so I was guessing that’s how it was.

Was that your first radio interview? If so, well done. You weren’t a stuttering mess.

I knew I shouldn’t have had that Dogfish 90 Minute IPA with lunch.

It was. I don’t listen to talk radio much so I had no idea how I was doing.
