Game 83, Royals at Mariners
Rowland-Smith vs Greinke, 7:10 pm.
The last time the M’s played Kansas City, they beat Felix and we beat Greinke, so it all evened out at the end of the series. Well, they beat Felix (sort of) again last night, but I’m not going to bet on the M’s repeating history tonight. Greinke vs Hyphen… not great for the M’s.
Line-up wise, Saunders moves up to 7th. He’s had a couple of impressive at-bats that led to walks the last few days, which is my guess for the impetus behind this move. Good to see Wak getting him a little higher in the line-up.

At least Wak broke up the Three automatic outs.
Yet we still have this lifetime stat line vs. Greinke:
Figgins: 0 for 16 with zero walks
Lopez: 1 for 17
Gutierrez: 2 for 18
And Kotchman still in the lineup. Milton must still be in search of yesterday’s Sacrifice Fly.
Plug Branyan in at 1B and put Bradley in at DH. I would like that.
I’m so glad Saunders has been doing well lately. No longer having to defend him around here is almost as satisfying as no longer having to defend Beltre to the idiot Sox fan I run into frequently at my local pub. (Though, predictably, rather than eating crow he is instead starting to forget how vehemently he was against the Sox making that acquisition.)
Bradley had sore legs yesterday..prob same today
Greinke hasn’t been quite so greinkesque this year — especially compared to the first half of last year. Which isn’t to say that he doesn’t have every chance of shutting down this M’s lineup, but it’s a factor if the discussion involves comparing last years’ trading of aces’ wins with this year.
This Hyphen is a decent opcion for 2011,

Damn lalo I was just about to say the same thing. It seems like Hyphen is getting himself back into the swing of things. Man with all the pitching that this team has, just think of what we could do with an average offense? Oh and actual respect for fundamentals like a catcher catching a ball

I think we found our LF holder for the next five or six years, hopefully that will continue to have consistency in their at-bats, GOOD LUCK SAUNDERS!!!
That pitch Greinke just struck out Bard on was simply unhittable. Ted Williams, Barry Bonds, Babe Ruth, I don’t care. Nobody can hit that.

Well, our offense is as lifeless as Senator Byrd.
So the kid picks up a fair ball that came his way. BIG DEAL. If you don’t want fans to go for a live ball in those seats maybe you shouldn’t put seats there. And then he gets thrown out. Shows the idiocy of the Mariners organization from top to bottom.

Probably not likely since this game thread is so bare, but can someone please tell me why you would bring in a pitcher that the league is batting .390 against in a one-run ball game in the 8th inning with the opposing team’s cleanup hitter up?
After tonight’s stellar performance, in which White manages to get credit for an inning pitched because Guillen pulls up lame for a double-play and another runner is thrown out at home, the league is now batting .407 against him.
How does this guy get into a game that matters? For that matter, how does this guy get to be on a major league team?
After watching the replay of the Branyan double there is very little chance of Ichiro scoring. When the fan gets the ball Ichiro is just barely passed second.
And DeJesus is standing just passed him. I suppose he might have scored if he bobbles it badly.
I’m sure Geoff Baker will have something stupid to say about this tomorrow.

heard somewhere that the White Sox could offer Tyler Flowers and Dayan Viciedo for Cliff Lee, a 3b and a catcher with an awesome power, I would love this package.
Actually, there’s that rule somewhere in the club manifesto which states that there must be at least ONE player from the state of Washington on the roster at all times in order to “maintain” the “casual” portion of the fanbase who feel they absolutely must have a “local” guy to root for when coming out to the games.
Hence, since Tui’s back down at Tacoma these days, we now have White Flag Time instead.
(BTW, I wonder if he’s close to being out of options?)
That’s highway robbery on the WhiteSox side of the highway. Viciedo is overweight and overrated, has been from Day One. And I’m including the idea that he’ll have to go to first base sooner than later.
And Flowers is ‘meh’ as far as a ceiling goes. You don’t gain significantly more than if you just let Moore earn the job.
What about getting an established MLB player for Lee in a 3-team trade? Yeah, a Cliff Lee for Prince Fielder trade would make no sense to either team this year. BUT, It could be a very enticing 3-team trade for the M’s building towards next year.
Let’s say something like this:

Tampa Bay Gets:
Cliff Lee
David Aardsma
Milwaukee Gets:

TB B Level Prospect
Seattle B Level Prospect
In theory? That might work, codybond31.
But the Rays are NOTORIOUSLY hard to pry young talent from, and I’m not convinced they view Davis as an expendable piece or Lee as a commodity that they truly need.
It could be they try to acquire Lee as a pre-emptive move to keep him from the Yankees, but the Yanks have been lukewarm in their interest. So far as I know, they haven’t offered anything.
I’m also not hot on acquiring Prince Fielder. I know he’s a 5-WAR bat, and there are few of those around. But his body makes me worry that the older he gets, the more he’s hurt.
It happened to his father. And his exit from the major leagues was, shall we say- less than gradual?
And how the hell does a vegetarian push 300 pounds on a 5’11” frame, anyway??

That said, your deal sounds unlikely, both because of the reasons SoZ stated above, and because this deal would be utterly ridiculous for the Brewers.
They give up Prince Fielder (with no viable replacement for him), get a troubled outfielder with declining numbers who is worse than anyone they currently have in the OF, and get some lower-tier prospect chaff.
No way the Brewers would take that deal.
Probably into the peanut butter and high-fat granola a little too much. 🙂
Seriously, though, I agree. Even though he’s well ahead of where his dad was stats-wise at 26, I get the feeling that he won’t age particularly well, either — and then we might very well be into Richie Sexson territory once more when it comes to an unmovable contract.
I agree the exact details of players and teams of my Prince Fielder trade example can be argued but What about the idea of going for an established player besides prospects…
