Last game before the All-Star Game, which COUNTS this time and yet still doesn’t really matter all that much for us.

Saunders ninth again. Also I bet you thought we were done seeing Kotchman. Think again.
Hyphen vs. Sabathia. Hyphen has a good recent history against the Yankees, and Ichiro and Death to Flying Things have hit Sabathia in the past. Baseball!
If this game ends up going awry, you could also tune into the Futures Game, where Alex Liddi and Carlos Peguero will be hitting 4-5 in the World lineup. Game time on that is 3pm PDT.

Because the “fans” won’t come out to see the team if there isn’t at least one guy from Washington on the roster — even if he completely sucks.

So my early prediction for the Futures Game is that the U.S. is going to win it. Strong pitching by the World Team will only be able to keep the U.S. bats at bay for so long, and meanwhile the World batters will struggle to get things going.
??? Are you really comparing trading the two future faces of the franchise to trading a 36 year old outfielder who is going to more than likely start declining sooner rather than later? The guy’s game relies heavily on speed and bat quickness. Those, aside from vision, are usually two of the first abilities to leave a player. I would bet a lot that in a couple years Ichiro isn’t going to be hitting in the mid-.300’s.
Besides, we’re not winning WITH him. What, if we part ways with him we’ll become a sub-.500 team? I’m not saying he is part of the problem, because he is not, but we already have the sub– .500 record taken care of. I’m just saying this team needs to build towards the future and free up some cap space. a 36 year old outfielder usually doesn’t fit into those plans. I love Ichiro as much as anyone, I will shed a tear the day if he ever wears a uniform that doesn’t say Mariners on it, but it would be for the better. We could get a huge return for a guy like him.
Although keep in mind I’m pretty much speaking out of sheer anger that this team is horrible. Once football season starts I get to start going through another headache of a season thanks to my St. Louis Rams. Take it easy on me haha.
As stupid as rally fries are, giving them out when the away team is up strikes me as even more stupid.

There have been some posts here by the mods addressing exactly how well Ichiro will age and how his skill set will hold up. Try giving them a read; very interesting. As counter-intuitive as it seems, speed and quickness do not leave a player, see Ricky Henderson.
Anyway, it’s all been beaten like a rented mule on this blog. It’s an tiresome as this game.
My bitch today is, if I have to hear one more time that it’s Nick Swisher’s first trip to the ASG, I’m going to scream. Particularly after hearing that it was the result of a campaign by him and the team to get the votes. I don’t know about you all, but it wouldn’t feel like I earned but that I won an popularity contest…oh wait…

Peguero is huge, a big young man – wow. He lined a solid single to right on the first pitch. It is an all-star game, but still. He also went 1st to 3rd on a single to straight center right in front of the CF. That was nice too.
The catcher for team USA is a young guy from Bellevue (in the Angels org, plays in Portland :(, and he looks decent too. Maybe we can kidnap him. 🙂
This is way better than watching the Ms game, which I luckily didn’t really see any of today.
Kotchman playing to get a a place his next team’s roster, but I’ll take it.

Peguero doubles to the left center gap. He was thinking of trying to make it a triple. I’ve never seen this guy before and I like what I see.
What to make of Kotchman … The more replacement 1B’s we find – the better he hits? Go figure.
Futures Game: Liddi 2 – AB’s, two weak flies (one foul – one to CF). His bat looks a little slow to me. 2 AB’s … how’s that for the supreme small sample size?
Peguero: Two bullets (single, double) … and that mother can run! Long, power swing/upper cut though … big league pitchers will eat him up – maybe for quite a while if not longer. 6’5″ runs fast and hits the ball far and hard. Definitely worth more looks/time.

Not his intent to rip people off, I think. I just think he understands player values better than the people he’s traded with and/or has had the other team over a barrel(Omar Minaya for sure, and Andrew Friedman was in a bind for this year).
I WILL say what we’ve given up in pure trade so far- Luis Valbuena, J.J. Putz, J.C.Ramirez, Philippe Aumont, Tyson Gillies, Brett Lorin, Nathan Adcock, Aaron Pribanic, Fabian Williamson- certainly haven’t distinguished themselves with their better play once out of our organization.
Chris Tillman beats that entire group (even right now) all by himself, if we’re talking talent given up that hurts.
I think Mike Sweeney’s new monikers are “Retired” and “Gone Fishin'”. Jose Lopez’ new nickname’s gonna be picked by his new team.

Which catcher is the one who can’t catch again? I was at the game today and by the 5th inning I was just trying to get as wasted as possible off of $8.75 beers while enjoying the nice weather. It’s going to be a long second half.

Yes a few million per year should equate to some inspiration, but to draw an analogy to the real world, where is our manager when it comes to inspiring the focus and performance of his employees / players? This Zen thing may have worked for Phil Jackson, but the talent base there was a little different.

No hate about entertaining all offers at this point. Seriously, what’s to be lost in listening to offers? If you buy into the concept of selling high, then to not at least entertain offers for Ichiro at this point assumes that either Ichiro will retire as a Mariner (which would sentimentally be cool, but not necessarily what the team needs now) or that the FO believes that his trade value will go up in the future.
I’m intrigued by Peguero,is a guy who hits 30 HR in the minor leagues, is true, is striking out a lot, but maintains a batting average of 260 to 270, very good, and an OBP of almost 370, very good too, a OPS nearly 900, has only 23 years old, has speed, good defense I think, was selected all-star game, and there had two hits, but I’ve never heard anyone excited about him or his power. I’ve even heard that not even a prospect, someone might say something. Because I am not an expert
Brilliant idea, get rid of the one non-pitcher on the M’s that’s worth paying to see. Besides, exactly which team in the majors would value Ichiro at 17 million a year through 2012 and be willing to give up A-level prospects for the honor? That’s right, no one.
Really? You think that there isn’t a single team who would be willing to pay 17 mil a season for one of the best leadoff men in baseball (for the moment)? a few years ago we gave Jeff FREAKING Weaver $6 million. We gave Beltre almost $13 million. Gary Matthews Jr. got $10 million. Vernon Wells made almost $20 million. I think you get my point here, so the attitude was really unnecessary.
I’m not saying I want Ichiro gone. I think he has a no-trade clause anyways. I’m just saying it makes a lot of sense to entertain offers for him seeing as how he probably won’t be around when the Mariners do finally right the ship, so why not just see what we could get in return for him? Not to mention the cap space it’ll free up.

You’d be well served to read up on one of the 382 million times that someone has come up with the “brilliant” idea of trading Ichiro and posted it here before.
Cliff’s Notes version: The assumptions you’re working from are pretty much entirely baseless, and there is almost no situation under which trading Ichiro away would be a net advantage.
I take umbrage at hearing Spain being called the dirtier team. The way Holland played the first half, the entire mid-field should have been arrested and thrown in jail for assault…

I would like to see Luke French get a shot at replacing RRS.
Meanwhile, Halman is killing it at AAA, but is blocked by Saunders and Bradley. While Halman continues to strike out a ton, he has a .924 OPS and a .585 SLG in 217 AB’s this year, with 8 SB’s.
Isn’t pretty much every decision in baseball baseless? Death and taxes my friend, death and taxes.
Anywho, I’ll shut up about the ichiro thing. Only because if one more person uses a phrase such as “what a brilliant idea”/”another brilliant idea” sarcastically I’m going to grow very confused. Seeing as how I already said I didn’t think it was that great of an idea, just an idea that deserves some small amount of consideration. Not from you guys, but from the FO
Actually, the move I’d really like to see from the FO would be for Lincoln and Armstrong to just mercifully step aside and turn the team’s operations over to competent baseball people who are interested in championships rather than bobbleheads.

Bobblehead, shmobblehead…same old same old year after year. This is getting old. Mariners trump up their latest band of misfits, retreads, and utility men. The fan base slurps the kool-aid, a few posters tell it like it really is and get demonized by the rah-rahs while the team hits like poop. The minority posters are always spot-on, the team sucks, and the diehards disregard the obvious and continue to mud sling at those of us who sound like cynics, but recognize a duck for a duck.
This ball club has been an embarrassment for six or seven years now. There has been no middle of the order presence since Bret Boone packed up his juice and retired. There are 40 or so ex-Mariners contributing for other ball clubs. Our one “icon” is an overrated diva who is coddled and protected by the press but rarely makes a difference for the ball club even though he leads the universe in infield hits. Wait til he’s a free agent and we’ll finally find out what the other franchises really feel about his value.
This FO will never come around. Their primary interests are marketing paraphenalia to the Pacific Rim, unloading talent before it becomes too expensive, and promoting the illusion of caring about its fans.
