Jamey Wright Replaces Chad Cordero Too

In addition to the move outlined below by Marc, the M’s have also signed Jamey Wright as a free agent, and he will take Chad Cordero’s spot on the roster. Cordero rejected his assignment to Triple-A and is now a free agent.
Wright is what Sean White is supposed to be – an extreme groundball guy who gets hitters to pound his sinker into the dirt. The problem is that he doesn’t do anything else well, and his below average command and lack of an outpitch make him a pretty mediocre reliever. He’s nothing to get excited about.
Still, though, any day that involves Sean White going away is a good one.

So we wait all that time for Cordero to get back to the majors and then get rid of him after a fairly short stint? And not even for a very promising player? Strange… oh well. I guess it doesn’t matter too much in the grand scheme of things.
Cordero showed me enough to convince me that he’d always be more of a contributor to the “Problem” side of the ledger than the “Solution” side.
Even in his salad days, I always kind of regarded him as a Three-Card Monty sort of reliever, a lot like Brian Fuentes but right-handed.
To wit: If he hides the ball and has good command, he’ll sneak three outs for you. But his velocity always has been and always will be eminently hittable.
Right now, the Mariners are in full-on search mode for long-term answers. I’m tuning in tonight just to see what a bullpen without Sean White in it looks like.
It’s turning out to be a big news day for the Mariners:

The only appreciable difference between “White” and “Wright,” may be the name on the back of the jersey … but hey, at least there’s that!
Cordero: Low cost “gamble” – and no loss whatsoever. His velocity is bad and he is done.
Seddon up – good (I guess). It certainly beats the alternative.
Is Sweeney still on the “DL?” – or did the traveling Secretary book his flight to San Diego instead of to Anaheim?
But with the loss of White we are dealt a serious setback in our quest to have every possible spelling of “Shaun”!
Bullpens do that. They go from the best part of the team to the worst and back again, sometimes with no changes in personnel, and sometimes more than once in a season. Relievers are the most volatile players in baseball, and they pitch so few innings it’s hard to know what you’re seeing.
So it’s difficult to judge a front office by their bullpens, since even they aren’t sure what they think they have. About all you can do is look at how much they are spending: since you’re getting unreliability no matter what, it’s dumb to spend a lot of money on it. This was one thing (maybe only thing) Bavasi got right: don’t throw a lot of money at something so unpredictable. He also got pretty good performances out of his bullpens, but that could’ve been mostly luck. (How’s that Putz thing been working out for everybody? And Thornton?)
The dollar amounts suggest somebody thinks these guys are (going to be) pretty good. And they’re all position players. Looking forward to reading more about them.

I have to say Torres sounds pretty interesting, but supposed 16-year-olds who throw 90 mph always sound interesting and very few of them make it to the majors.* Of course there wouldn’t be a blog known as Prince — blogs are part of the internet which, if you haven’t heard, is “over.”
