I’m not actually here; it just looks like I am because there’s a posting. For the next week I’m going to be away from the computer, which means that the next wrap is going to be delayed to sometime mid-week.

During the recent eight-game losing streak, which cost the Rainiers first-place in the standings, the offense was averaging three runs a game. As I went through the names for this week, I found most of them were still below .300, with Ackley just making it to the mark, though his average was mostly empty. So, in a lean weak, I’ll point to Winfree as the guy who was doing the most for the offense. He reached base, he was an effective runner, he didn’t strike out a lot. About all that was missing from it all was more power, though he did manage his eighth home run with the Rainiers, and his thirteenth overall this year accounting for his time in the International League. May next week be better.

On Wednesday, Baldwin turned in seven strong innings where he gave up a couple of runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out seven. It went for naught, the final loss in a string of eight games where the Rainiers couldn’t find a win. Four days later, he was out of the ‘pen in relief of the latest 21-year-old pitcher to join the roster and threw another five innings, picking up what was only the third Rainiers victory this month. It’s a rough lot for triple-A pitchers much of the time, particularly when they’re not quite good enough to figure into the team’s future, but my phantom hat is off to Baldwin this week for making the best of the situation.

Last year, as various debates were going on as to the relative worth of Dunigan or Liddi, I came down in the Liddi camp, pointing out that while Dunigan had done certain exceptional things in certain months, he was rarely doing multiple things like walking, hitting for power, or not striking out at the same time. This season has been a bit of a mess for Dunigan. In full months (a bit fuzzy considering injuries), his K-rate has never been below a third of his at-bats (it’s been as high as 44%), he’s hit above .200 once, and twice hit three home runs in a month, and not yet exceeded that. August might turn out better for him, as he’s recorded three home runs, five walks, and a sub-33% K-rate already, but we have half a month to see exactly how he’ll finish. 50% Ks this week leave me a little nervous though.

If you’re looking for interesting pitching in the next three weeks, you’re probably better off turning to Tacoma, where three of the guys in the rotation are currently twenty-one. For solid pitching, the Jaxx are still a go every now and then. Grube got the last start before the rains came and had a one-hit, no walk performance going into the seventh, where things nearly went awry for him, spared only by a double play following a walk and a reach on error. The record might speak otherwise, but Grube gives the Jaxx a chance to win just about every time he’s on the mound.

It was a week for home runs. The pitching staff was brutalized by them at times, and for the offense’s part, they added twelve to a league total that now has them leading by thirty-three, with a hundred fifty-one on the season. While he didn’t have the most of the week (that goes to the guy below), Chavez is probably the most notable because he was the first in the minor league system to hit thirty this season. He probably won’t be the last, as Halman and Poythress are close behind, but the feat means something, even if nearly three-quarters of them came at home. I will be excited next year to see what he does in a less insane climate.

We’re dipping into the relief corps again to look at Penney, who is still probably the best bullpen arm on staff. Last time out I mentioned his curious problem of letting some of his inherited runners score no matter what. Well, that problem is still present, but when you bring him on with the bases empty, he’s perfectly fine. He’s another interesting note on him: he hasn’t walked a batter since June, and is running a 56/4 K/BB for the season in 54.0 innings pitched. It’s probably why he’s been statistically the Mavs best reliever. And the inherited runners? I really hope that finds some way of resolving itself.

For the second week in a row, Cat takes the top spot, though this time he actually had the statistically better week. 50% extra-base hits in such a span is not bad at all, and the numbers actually reflect his larger August trend. With fourteen games in the book, he already has more home runs (five) than he’s hit in any other month and is two doubles away from tying his season high. He’s also on pace to walk ten times like he did in April and June, though it’s a step back from the fourteen he had in July and the fifteen in May. I’d be a bit more enthusiastic about it all, but his BABIP at the moment is .500, whereas it was fairly normal every month but July, so he may be getting a bit lucky.

I didn’t go with Wilhelmsen last time because I thought Erasmo’s twelve Ks were more impressive. In this case, six and two-thirds perfect innings of baseball? That I can get on board with. You can say that Wilhelmsen is slowing down a little though, because he ran a 22/2 K/BB in 15.0 IP in Arizona, 14/2 in 14.2 IP in Everett, and now 18/5 K/BB, but on the whole, he’s having a remarkable run for a guy who wasn’t in baseball for nearly six years. The next stop for him is going to be High Desert, which may end up being tricky. I think that I’d consider is moving him in for the Cal League playoffs, assuming that the Lumberkings don’t make it in.

This is a slight letdown from last week, when he hit four out of the park. I suppose we’ll manage somehow. The novelty of him playing short on Sunday was certainly nice, but more realistically, I’d expect more dingers and less of that. Over the past two weeks, Mailloux has leapfrogged Rivers for the team’s home run lead and now sits tied for second in the league with eleven. He’s also tied for the lead in slugging, thanks to the fact that he’s also third in the league with fourteen doubles. That Mailloux would eventually hit at the level has never really been in doubt, but ultimate position and how long he’ll keep it up are questions we’d have more trouble with at the moment.

Yeah that’s right. The starting shortstop for the ’06 and ’07 squads is now the ’10 squad’s pitcher of the week and a member of its rotation. Baseball is a strange business sometimes. There’s not much I can say about Diaz, save that he has decent velocity and his starting debut was better than what you might expect, given that he had a 13/4 K/BB in 11.1 innings in July, along with a .271 average against. He also was facing an okay offense in Vancouver. Yep. Baseball is weird. I’m sure he fields his position well though.

I think this is a new face taking the top spot, which affords me the opportunity to talk a little about him. Browning was drafted as a college senior, a 43rd-round pick this season out of James Madison. He ran a 1.000+ OPS there three out of four years, but for whatever reason went undrafted until the Mariners took a shot at him, despite being a decent prep prospect and regarded as one of the better bats in his conference throughout college. The early goings look favorable for him as he has more walks than strikeouts, so we’ll see how he does as an under-the-radar corner man.

It was bound to happen eventually, though in typical fashion, it didn’t result in a win. Nava has been an also-ran most weeks as far as pitching goes, every now and then turning in a fine performance in a week of better ones. This one was a bit of an exception as there was never much doubt in it. After a leadoff single in the first, he retired twenty-two of twenty-three before giving up a walk. The downside of that? The Bluefield Orioles are just as miserable as their parent club. Everyone’s got to start somewhere, I suppose.

A 14 inning pitchers duel was an awesome way to get my very first taste of minor league baseball on Saturday.
Plus, even though we were in the “nose bleeds,” only being a stone throw from the front row enabled us to keep an eye on upgrade options. After a few innings, I find myself in the front row to the left of the net right where the visiting players pop out of the dugout.
Sorry if I have this wrong (can’t find a box score), but Cortes was fun to watch, just for velocity. Maybe it was being that close.
Anyway, I’m hooked. The girlfriend and I for sure want to head back to Cheney more often.
Why no love for Brandol Perez in the “Dispatches from the Land of Rehabbers and Teens”? Sure, Van Heydoorn & Henry Perez are no longer teens so I get their omissions but Brandol… Whew, I don’t think he’s another Germocen or Acosta since he just turned 17, is left-handed, & has a projectable frame.
Cortes was crazy fun to watch on Saturday, I’m excited to see him around more.
44 K’s against 1 walk? I can’t believe this guy. Cliff Lee is jealous.
