Game 134, Indians at Mariners

Tomlin vs Fister, 7:10 pm.

I’m down in Tacoma watching the last game at Cheney Stadium before they rebuild this place. I’m not at all sad to be missing this game.

I took a look at the baseball standings today and the Mariners are closing in on the Baltimore Orioles for worse record in the American league. They are only three games ahead, and there is plenty of time to suck up that deficit. The Orioles have had a near insurmountable lead the entire year, but thanks to better play by the O’s, and continued suckitude by the M’s we are closing the gap. I predict the Mariners will pull it out at the end, and finish at the bottom of the American League.

However, the M’s have an eight game lead over the Pirates, and that may just be too many games to overcome as the season winds down. If the M’s work hard and finish second in the Major Leagues they will have to settle for just the second best available player in next year’s amateur draft. Does anyone think they can move ahead of the Pirates?

  2. greentunic on September 2nd, 2010 2:33 pm

Unfortunately rcc it “pains” me to say I don’t think we can catch the Pirates. They just are not a sound team on ANY front.

On another note, I was watching the FSN Pete Rose interview and he said of managing: “If teams want to sell tickets and win, call me.”

It got me thinking. What aboug giving Pete Rose a chance? He obviously knows baseball very well, he is a hard-ass (he will drive the players to work hard for the team), and he will most definately sell tickets and give the M’s a shot in the arm. Why not at this point? After having 4 or 5 rather boring and unsuccessful managers, what should stop us?

  3. georgmi on September 2nd, 2010 2:40 pm

What about giving Pete Rose a chance?…what should stop us?

You mean besides his lifetime ban from baseball?

  4. dnc on September 2nd, 2010 2:46 pm

    what should stop us?

    Am I being whooshed here?

  5. greentunic on September 2nd, 2010 2:56 pm

Well there is that haha, but it seems he is close to being reinstated. Not sure.

  6. georgmi on September 2nd, 2010 3:02 pm

Pete has been “close to being reinstated” for at least six years, and in his own mind, for about twenty.

I think if Bud didn’t let him back in when he finally confessed, he’s not going to. Maybe next Commissioner.

  7. greentunic on September 2nd, 2010 3:03 pm

details details. Okay i forgot. he made it seem he was so readily available that I forgot he was banned from managing and not just the HOF. good thing I aint the comish..

I know I’m stealing this sentiment from somewhere, and mangling it in the process. I think it might be our very own Derek Zumsteg. Honestly?

Baseball should have sued Pete Rose into non-existence, taken everything from him, including his home, burned it down, and then salted the earth so that nothing would ever grow there again.

He is the lowest form of scum to ever wear a baseball uniform. He bet on the game. He bet on his own team. He compromised the integrity of the sport. He has no personal intergrity, and I don’t want him within miles of my baseball team.

He’s just as bad as the ’19 Black Sox. Like them, he should never wear a baseball uniform again, for any reason, and he has no place in the Hall of Fame.

  9. Faceplant on September 2nd, 2010 3:36 pm

Hey, I’m going to be at Cheney too. Go Rainiers!

” Baseball should have continued the investigations, forced him to cough up more bank records, more checks, and refused to let him plea out. They should have banned him from baseball, sued him into bankruptcy, bought his house for pennies, burned it to the ground and salted the earth so nothing could grow there.” — Me, 2002

  11. jordan on September 2nd, 2010 4:45 pm

Didn’t Pete bet that his team would win though? If so, its not like he threw the games.

  12. DMZ on September 2nd, 2010 4:46 pm

If only someone had written a book that discussed this at great length.

  13. robbbbbb on September 2nd, 2010 5:26 pm

I thought that was you. I even went looking for it, and didn’t find it.

You wrote it better than I did. It stuck with me.

  14. robbbbbb on September 2nd, 2010 5:32 pm

Pete Rose is that slimy guy you’ve met who has fallen on misfortune, none of whish is his fault.

He’s the roommate you had who just stopped paying rent, while telling you that everything was fine.

He’s the guy who slaps his wife around, and then tells the cops that she had it coming.

He’s that bozo who does something stupid on the freeway that endangers everyone else, and then flips you the bird because you’re in his way.

He is, plainly, a complete and total dumbass. You stay far away from him, because he causes all kinds of problems wherever he goes. Mostly, his purpose in life is to serve as a warning to others.

  15. msfanmike on September 2nd, 2010 5:54 pm

Didn’t Pete bet that his team would win though? If so, its not like he threw the games.

Jordan, a lot of people have this sentiment, but that is probably becauase they haven’t entirely thought out what it means to “gamble” and place a bet in conjunction with what it means when you don’t gamble – and do not place a bet. Rose bet on his team to win (supposedly) but he did not bet on every game. When he did not bet on his team to win, that “non-act” was information for others to use. In the eyes of the Commish – that cost him as well. It’s a point that doesn’t seem to get mentioned very much … or at least not during the nearly 15+ years when the great Pete debate was a common talk radio topic.

I saw Rose play. I was old enough to appreciate how good he was as a player at the time I saw him play. Over the years, I have changed my mind about a dozen times on whether or not he should be allowed to have a chance to be voted into the hall of fame. He certainly isn’t the worst character that would be in (if allowed)- but it would be a very difficult/nearly impossibly case to make for him to be in … based on what people know about him today. The debate will always center on his playing days vs. his managerial days … which is a fair argument to make.

Rest assured, the extent of what he did and when he did it will never be known for certain. Based only on what they could substantively prove he did (and only during his managerial days) that was enough for him to earn the “lifetime” ban. Pete earned/deserved what he eventually got.

With that said, I think he will eventually be voted into the HOF posthumously. He is pushing 70 years old, has severely abused his body along the way … and “posthumously” is probably not all that far off into the future – geologically speaking.

In comparison to Ty Cobb … come on! Not even close on the citizenship barometer. Definitely not “Pat Boone” – but he is no Ty Cobb. As a future MLB Manager: No way no how!

@TheRealMariners hasn’t posted the lineup yet – I’m waiting to see whether Tui is playing or not. If he is, Saunders is sitting of course…

  17. firova2 on September 2nd, 2010 5:58 pm

Back to the Mariners. In their past ten games, they have scored less than four runs nine times. And in the remaining game, they scored . . . four.

    Long season.

  18. greentunic on September 2nd, 2010 6:10 pm

No Tui or Saunders today… ugh…

  19. lalo on September 2nd, 2010 6:12 pm

Does anyone think they can move ahead of the Pirates?

Unfortunately, the difference between the first and second selection is too much this year, Anthony Rendon first and then 5 or 6 that could be the second, I hope that Pittsburh choose Purk or Gerrit Cole due to injury of Rendon and the M ‘S take Rendon, Rendon is what they need, is a very good player, 3rd base

  20. Marinersmanjk on September 2nd, 2010 6:40 pm

Personally, I love Pete Rose and him managing the M’s would be a dream for me. That being said, he is a dirtbag for cheating but in my mind, nothing can negate how he played on the field. He should be in the halll because its a hall of the best players to play the game and Pete played it better than just about everyone. The man could play baseball and the M’s need someone managing the team that has some experience. However, he isn’t going to be reinstated anytime soon so for next year what about Jerry Manuel? It would be surprising if he is in New York next year.

  21. msfanmike on September 2nd, 2010 7:11 pm

    No p’Tui: GREAT news!

Langerhans starting over Saunders: WWWWHHHHHYYYYYY ???!!!

This makes no sense – unless Saunders is injured. I don’t care if Sabathia is pitching, Saunders should be playing. Did anybody hear a reason as to why Saunders isn’t in the lineup tonight?

  22. Westside guy on September 2nd, 2010 7:24 pm

I suppose Brown could just be giving Saunders a day off… but I just don’t get his lineups. Why is he so allergic to playing the young guys more regularly? We’re not playing for anything; and even if we were, it’s not like the regulars are any good. Seriously, is there anyone that thinks Lopez is any good?

I’d have Saunders in left and Tui at third most days now. If Guti needs a day off, put Saunders in center and have Langerhans in left. To mix things up you could use Langerhans to spell Kotchman at first.

  23. poordispatcher on September 2nd, 2010 7:37 pm

    Nooo……! 6-4-3….!!!
    I guess it’s not too surprising…

  24. Westside guy on September 2nd, 2010 7:39 pm

Hey, Neihaus used my nickname for Lopez – 6-4-3!

I’m sure he was referring to Lopey and not just the play…

Yeah, good thing Brown’s sticking with our veteran third baseman! No telling WHAT might’ve happened if Tui had been batting there!

  25. Westside guy on September 2nd, 2010 7:46 pm

    Ichiro! Nice play!

  26. lalo on September 2nd, 2010 8:02 pm

Fister is an excellent 5 starter, Vargas 4, Felix 1, Pineda 3, they only need a 2nd starter, lefty, Ted Lilly is an excellent option for 2011, maybe for a 2 years 15 millions.

  27. greentunic on September 2nd, 2010 8:15 pm

Moore on interstate agian… How can someone that hits so so well at AAA struggle so mightily in the show? Obviously the talent is a jump but gosh it’s frustrating.

  28. Westside guy on September 2nd, 2010 8:22 pm

I’m a bit late on this I realize – but while I know home runs can be overvalued, I just LOVE seeing those bombs Branyan hits.

  29. Westside guy on September 2nd, 2010 9:00 pm

Best thing about Jose Lopez leading off the inning? He can’t hit into a double play…

  30. kenshabby on September 2nd, 2010 9:01 pm

Is it just me, or do Fister starts have a common theme? Pitch pretty well for a few innings and give up no runs, then hit the wall of suckage for one inning and give up 3-4+ runs.

  31. Westside guy on September 2nd, 2010 9:02 pm

    No, it’s not just you.

  32. Westside guy on September 2nd, 2010 9:03 pm

Great… we get to watch Guti pick his nose in the outfield…

Now if we can just see Lopez adjusting his package, life will be complete.

  33. msfanmike on September 2nd, 2010 9:06 pm

I wonder what Ben Broussard and Eduardo Perez are doing this evening?

Fister is an excellent 5 starter,

I think Fister plus Pauley = 1 decent #5 starter. Or maybe French plus Pauley. Or maybe French plus Fister plus Pauley. That’s part of the problem … they have too many mediocre #6 ish pitchers. They would never split a starting spot into multiple parts/players, but they probably should.

If Pineda makes the team out of spring training, he will probably be used in the “5” slot. His innings will be limited and he will need to skip some starts to protect his innings/pitch limits.

Ted Lilly in the AL at $7.5M per season: I can’t see it, but they could do worse. You are thinking along the correct lines anyway in that they will need a decent veteran starter who has a good health history, plus one more decent starter on the cheap with a good high side potential (Bedard?), half a bullpen … and according to DMZ’s stats a #2 through #9 hitter(s). Thanks for those stats DMZ. I was surprised that the #5 slot is the gaping orifice in the lineup in comparison to league average – and that it wasn’t the #4 slot.

The “Gaping Orifices” … that might make for an adequate and appropriate 2011 team marketing theme.

  34. Dennisss on September 2nd, 2010 9:09 pm

Every year, as Ichiro approaches 200 hits, I pay attention to the point at which he needs only one hit per remaining game to reach 200. Once he reaches that point, I relax a little, figuring he can cruise from there, barring injury. This year, he reached that point last night.

Two more hits tonight so far. The guy really is a joy to watch.

  35. msfanmike on September 2nd, 2010 9:20 pm

The guy really is a joy to watch.

I agree with that. I also believe he was approximately one entire time zone behind the last fastball that Sipp blew by him to end the 7th inning.

  36. davepaisley on September 2nd, 2010 9:21 pm

    T. Sipp? Really?

I can just hear the elementary school teacher calling roll, “Sipp, T.?”

“No thanks, Miss, I only drink chocolate milk and I tend to chug it anyway.”

  37. poordispatcher on September 2nd, 2010 9:40 pm

What’s the stat of the M’s coming back after trailing 8 innings? 2-36 or something?

  38. poordispatcher on September 2nd, 2010 9:41 pm

    Never mind. A 1-run ball game just became a 6-3 blowout…

  39. Breadbaker on September 2nd, 2010 9:42 pm

Too bad we couldn’t develop a left handed hitter who could hit it out to left in Safeco . . . oh, right.

  40. Westside guy on September 2nd, 2010 9:45 pm

So when he leads off – should I just call him 6-4?

  41. Westside guy on September 2nd, 2010 9:48 pm

I think Sims just inadvertently came up with the best slogan yet for the 2010 Mariners.

“The 2010 Mariners – Nothing But Zeroes!”

  42. lalo on September 2nd, 2010 9:52 pm

    Seddon, Sweeney, White, Olson, Wright…

A team of AA would be proud of this bullpen

  43. msfanmike on September 2nd, 2010 10:00 pm

Too bad we couldn’t develop a left handed hitter who could hit it out to left in Safeco . . . oh, right.

    And on a line, nonetheless.

  44. cjhenry on September 2nd, 2010 11:05 pm

Shin-Soo Choo is getting better. The Mariners wont recover anytime soon from letting guys like this go. It’s just the canary in the coalmine that the entire talent evaluation system was horribly broken, in a franchise killing way.

I’d say they might be in a situation where rebuilding takes so long that Ichiro is retired and Felix is out of town on his next contract before they even field a second place team.

However, I think that the whole rebuilding plan goes out the window this winter, as the FO panics about season ticket sales, and we swing over to desperate middle of the road free agent signings.

  45. G-Man on September 2nd, 2010 11:11 pm

I will lay it on Chuck Armstrong for letting Bavasi trade away Choo and Cabrera to the the Indians for a few months of Perez and Broussard. Bavasi was desperately trying to save his job, now we have to live with the consequences.

  46. heyoka on September 3rd, 2010 9:55 am

Branyan now has 101 TTOs with the M’s, that’s a rate well over 50%!

  47. msfanmike on September 3rd, 2010 11:54 am

Three True Outcomes huh? That seems to be about the team average.

  48. Westside guy on September 3rd, 2010 3:46 pm

Branyan’s always been a Three True Outcomes hero.

So was Buhner, for that matter.
