Game 145, Red Sox at Mariners

Matsuzaka vs French, 7:10 pm.
Dice-K is one of the least watchable pitchers in all of baseball. He takes forever, he nibbles at the corners, he throws a ton of pitches – he’s anti-entertainment. And then you have the M’s. Unless you are Luke French’s mother, there has to be something better for you to do tonight.
Ichiro, RF
Figgins, 2B
Branyan, DH
Gutierrez, CF
Kotchman, 1B
Lopez, 3B
Saunders, LF
Moore, C
Josh Wilson, SS

Saunders!!!
I dream of the day when Josh Wilson isn’t the starting shortstop and our lineup doesn’t consist of professional players who can’t hit at a professional level.
Hey, we could be like the division-leading Reds and inexplicably trade for Bloomquist, a guy they won’t even be able to use (if in fact he was useful at all) in the postseason.
The first time I read that, I thought for sure it was an Onion article that somehow slipped through.
BTW, have we checked to be sure Saunders and Tui aren’t in fact the same person? Like with Clark Kent and Superman, they’re never on the field at the same time. Maybe periodically Tui jumps into a batting cage and emerges in his Saunders outfit, and then every so often he encounters the kryptonite lurking in the LF wall and reverts back to his Tui persona?
My head exploded when I heard that during last night’s game, joser.
Speaking of heads exploding, how many innings before Dave Niehaus goes off on Dice-K’s slow pitching? He got pretty worked up last game.
Dice-K vs Kazmir must be a special kind of hell. The it-freezes-over-because-the-game-can’t-outrun-a-glacier kind.
In a completely unrelated (except “it’s not slow, and it matters”) question — Is the Storm game on free TV? (Like Kong or something?)
In better news, the Phillies will be at Safeco June 17th-19th next season. So there will be at least 3 games worth watching next year.
Good news:
Smoak has hit a 2-run homer.
He also just hit an RBI single to put the R’s ahead. Followed immediately by a sacrifice fly by Wilson to put them up 2. Runners on 2nd and 3rd, 2 outs for Carp. Who walks, reloading the bases for Tug.
Sounds like a good crowd there….
Alvin Davis throws out the first pitch, highlight of the night. On a related note, the M’s really need to sanction a “throw a Boston fan a beating night”….they’re everywhere..
I thought Wendell Kim wasn’t coaching third for the Sox any more.
I´m tired of mediocre shortstops like Jack and Josh, someone think that Triunfel could be our shortstop in 2011?? Or I´m crazy??
You’re crazy!
Anyway…yes, time to mock Beltre for the ruptured testicle thing. Liven the game up.
You think Triunfel can jump from AA to the majors while playing a very demanding defensive position? You think he won’t get destroyed at the plate by all the breaking balls in the majors? You think that’s the best way to develop talent?
Maybe we can just get the Sox to rub Beltre’s head again and induce a freak-out. That would be fun.
Ichiro!!!!
Well, we tied. Big whoop.
I try not to focus on the fact they might actually have the lead if Figgins didn’t keep running into outs.
seeing Beltre play and looking at his numbers he must be wondering why he wasted 5 years playing at Safeco (okay the pay cheques were pretty sweet). Check out his numbers in LA before playing for the M’s, his 5 very average years with M’s and then this wonderful offensive player reappears again 5 years later once he has escaped to Fenway.
Same is true for so many current M’s – look at the change in production from Figgins, Branyan (just from Cleveland), even Kotchman. Doesn’t make you optimistic that any player could come into Safeco and the M’s a death valley for hitters and perform. Not feeling good about any of our minor league hitters in this park – cringing at thought of Ackley hitting .195 with no power over the second half of next year. Forget about Triunfel…and I am not sure it is only the ballpark.
188 Go Ichiro!!!!
I dunno, casey. Beltre seems to be hitting pretty well while here.
Let’s call it a curse and be done with it.
This hits must have felt sweet coming against Dice-K, lalo. I sense no love lost.
And it was necessary to sacrifice…why?
Figgins hitting fairly well, Ichiro can steal…
Man, is he squeezing League or what?
*sigh*
Yeah, Bread, he was being squeezed.
I hate Brandon League.
This is a situation where good teams bring in a left handed pitcher.
BTW, getting rid of Wak (and Jr and Sweeney) sure turned everything around, didn’t it?
Don’t mess with us, Baltimore.
1. Bet on the M’s losing all week to build up account.
2. Bet on NFL and lose half my bankroll.
3. Repeat.
Yea, betting on the Mariners is like when I play blackjack in Vegas so I can feed my craps habit.
Figgins was safe on that steal, but he was called out. That’s not running into an out (unless you count his inability to make the ump see what is actually happening).
Beltre went from one of the worst parks in baseball for a pull RH hitter to probably the best, no big surprise. But yes, everybody always gets better when they leave the M’s. There’s no chance for any offense in this park. Edgar Martinez absolutely sucked in Safeco. Brett Boone couldn’t hit one out. Ichiro has his offense completely surpassed. The team is always and forever doomed, doomed I say! Let’s move the fences in and have a dinger-fest every night like the old days, because those Kingdome teams won so many world series!
Also, casey: what makes you think Ackley’s BA would be that poor? He won’t have much power, particularly while he’s still young, but he has a good eye.
Not to worry: the Bosox haven’t been to the WS since 2007. A few more years of 3rd place finishes and all those “Boston fans” will be digging out the Yankees caps they were wearing from ’96-’03.
When a team that is already 20+ games out of the pennant fires its manager, it’s not because they expect it to make things “turn around” that season.
Saunders hits .310 last year in Tacoma and hits .210 in majors
Moore hits .320 this year in Tacoma and hits .180 in Seattle
Smoak hits about .280 between Oky city and Tacoma and hits .160 for M’s
Ackley hits about .270 in minors this year and hits …. for 2011 M’s? But put him in Fenway and he will become Chase Utley
I don’t have any answers though – just lots of offensive doom and gloom. The good news though is the park has turned Vargas and Fister into major league starters.
Figgins was safe on that steal, but he was called out.
My point was, should he have been running at all?
Anyway, time to hit the showers for me, if not the team.
Oh good grief. Yes, if they don’t start out hitting like young Griffey or A-Rod from day one then it’s time to judge them failures. Because, as we all know, baseball players ALWAYS hit their stride immediately upon arrival in the majors.
Give me a break.
We’ve now got a two game lead on Baltimore for the second pick in the draft, unbelievable.
Watching the shit sandwich the M’s have been all year, it’s hard to comprehend just how bad Pittsburgh must be. It boggles the mind.
Why bother to do this, given how cranky you sound?
No kidding. Guy who runs the site spends a lot of time ragging on the choice to follow a losing team (while he makes superioir choices, apparently). Reminds me of the kids who would have a new favorite team every year, depending on who was in 1st place.
Needs new management.
