Congrats, Felix

You were awesome. Enjoy the award.
Also, 21 first place votes for Felix, 4 for Price, 3 for Sabathia. Win-Loss record took a whooping.

If you read “The Big Splash Option” you will see that both “trade” and “Upton” are in the post somewhere. And since Dave wrote that post and then went and wrote a post about Felix, the only natural conclusion one can come to is that Dave wants to trade Felix for Upton.
Have you lost all ability to use logic?
Anyone see the article on the New York Times about Felix? http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/19/sports/baseball/19cyyoung.html?_r=1
Halladay is quoted as saying, “But I think, ultimately, you look at how guys are able to win games. Sometimes the run support isn’t there, but you sometimes just find ways to win games. I think the guys that are winning and helping their teams deserve a strong look, regardless of how good Felix’s numbers are.”
And that just fuels the fire for all those NY commentors out there. (Sigh) Wins took a drubbing, but the court of public opinion still hasn’t caught up.

Comment From AndrewAndrew:
Virtually no one in the league should be considered “off the table” when Upton is on the table.
Dave Cameron:
Thank You. For perspective, I’d probably trade Felix Hernandez for Justin Upton.
and from twitter:
@d_a_cameron: M’s wouldn’t take the PR hit to include Felix in the offer, most likely, even though Upton is worth it.
your saying that Upton is worth more than Felix? hernandez?
@d_a_cameron: Yep. Pitcher attrition risk is absurdly high, hitters far less so. Upton also much cheaper, signed for an extra year.
Clearly, Dave thinks very highly of Justin Upton. People value players differently. As much as I think Upton could become a very good player, I see a lot of risk.
I definitely wouldn’t trade Felix for Upton. IMHO, it would be a colossal mistake.
Congrats to King Felix. Nice to see him outshine the horrible offense he pitched for.
And to sweeten the deal there are about 5 million Yankee fans doubling over in confusion as to why Sabathia didn’t win. That makes me smile. (=
Halliday is a great pitcher – but that doesn’t mean he is particularly intelligent or has any insight into baseball analysis. Joe Morgan used to routinely say the exact same thing. It’s absurdly easy to counter – you just have to point to one of Felix’s 1-0 losses or 1-0 no-decisions and say “BTW Roy – how would you have managed to win that game?”
So much of pitching is about what goes on inside the head of the pitcher; I’m sure Halladay honestly believes that his presence on the mound is in itself enough to spur the offense of his teammates. That kind of confidence, self-delusional or not, may very well be part of the reason he’s such a good pitcher (regardless of what effect, or lack thereof, it might have on his fellow players)
Well, now that Roy is in the NL, he’d answer “With my bat.”
Yeah, I’m not able to keep a straight face while typing that one either.
This is a good day for baseball; almost as good as the day that JOE MAUER re-upped with the Twins.
It will help to make up for this off-season’s bad days, when the marquee Free Agents sign with the wealthy clubs.
Why would Felix’s possession of this plaque (or whatever it is) change Dave’s valuation? Do opposing players strike out more now that they know the guy on the mound not only has Cy Young talent, but has an actual Cy Young?
(If anything, the CYA would make you more tempted to trade the player if he was only in arbitration and didn’t already have a contract, because those awards can inflate players’ arbitration pay considerably, making them more expensive for a team)
Somehow — and maybe this is just the endorphin carryover from Felix’s win — the fact that Harold Reynolds’ “logic” makes Barry Larkin laugh makes me happy for both of them.
As I understand it, Felix gets a bonus and a pay raise for winning the CYA.
Indeed, Cot’s says:
2010 Cy Young increases 2011 salary by $1M to $11M, 2012 salary by $0.5M to $19M, 2013 salary by $0.5M to $20M, 2014 salary by $0.5M to $20.5M
… for a total of $2.5M extra over the next three years (plus any other bonuses)
Trade him now!!!
😉
Gee, Joser, does Chone Figgins have an MVP escalator in his contract? If not, we should fix that, stat.
I bet Felix would say the same thing – and he’d be perfectly serious. 😀
Felix vs the NYY
3-0
IP – 26
H – 16
R – 1
ERA – 0.35
K – 31
CG – 2
I think they should shut up in the big fat ugly apple.
As far as the whining Yankee folks go — it’s worth mentioning that CC didn’t even come in second. And rightly so. Price was a better pitcher too. Just not better than Felix.
Well, as soon as Roy hits a grand slam off a two-time Cy Young winner, I’ll be serious about it too.
I should add: Price isn’t just a great pitcher, he’s also a classy guy. Some quotes from him:
and he tweeted:
(A classy guy who enjoys scaring people with pictures of his dog, apparently)
The Yankees are up in arms about this decision………………………………………………. and I’m loving it!!! Whine away!!!
I agree joser, I mentioned that Price was extremely classy with his comments and it is that attitude that will help him keep his head for the next 10 years while he dominates the AL.
Gotta ask you Dave… how does it feel to have EVERYONE referring to him as the crown you gave him?
KING Felix.
Thank you for that 🙂
Those Halladay quotes are a little out of context. He was coming off the golf course (probably caught a little off-guard), and he said some nice things about Felix. He was basically fishing for some nice things to also say about CC/Price and I think it just came out wrong. I don’t think he was trying to snub Felix and his W/L record more than trying to give CC some accolades.
