M’s To Non-Tender Lopez

So says Mike Salk. This isn’t a surprise, really, though it is kind of funny that the M’s couldn’t find a trade partner for him during a winter where Geoff Blum gets a two year deal and Miguel Tejada gets a raise for having the worst year of his career. He’ll likely end up in a park where his right-handed power will play better and get his career back on track, but it was just never going to work here.
No I didn’t. I said it is not surprising they couldn’t trade him, because they would only be able to trade him to a team that was willing to offer him arbitration. Then the other team is at the mercy of the arbitration process, and I don’t think any other team thinks highly enough of Lopez to pay him what the arbitrator thinks he is worth.
As of the time Kazinski posted that, Jose Lopez was arbitration eligible. Whether he said that or not. The deadline for teams to offer arbitration to reserve players is today.
