Mariners Sign Erik Bedard

Yep, again. This time, after missing all of the 2010 season, Bedard gets a non-guaranteed contract, meaning that they can cut him before spring training ends and only owe him a fraction of the base salary. It’s no-risk, some reward. So, he’s back for another year.
Well we are after all bargain bin shopping right…
I don’t mind this at all…no real risk here and when he’s on and he’s healthy…
I second that. Great move I think.
Oh the possibilities…
Upton, Smoak, Ackley
Felix, Bedard, Pineda
I am not gonna lie, I love this move. After a year off, and not much work in the last 1 3/4 years, lets hope Bedard is finally healthy. He was lights out for 4-5 innings, then I guess his injury reared its ugly head. If he can be 100%, which he has never been in a Mariners uniform, he is a quality #2 starter. I have my fingers crossed.
Not a bad deal. If he ever gets healthy, he could be worth something. Flip him for prospects at the deadline if he does well.
Am I correct in understanding that the Mariners are on the hook for his rehab anyway?
How does that work? Is there a time limit for that, or can he just hang around the team for the next 20 years to save money on a gym membership?
Even when Bedard was healthy for us he never could make it beyond 5 innings. It was a good 5 innings but it hurt the bullpen. I hope the M’s sign another SP like a Francis type.
No-brainer move. And I’m happy to see the M’s do *something*.
His membership comes w/ an 8-million dollar clause in which he promises to pitch one pitch in 2011, or else the Scooter store won’t help w/ his mobility.
How does that work? According to the mlb site, the 40 man roster is full, and the Mariners will not get a rule 5 draft pick. Today is the deadline to ask for outright waivers to drop a player in preparation for the rule 5 draft.
Lopez has been traded to Colorado.
Darn the 40’s full again. No worries niterunner, I anticipate more trades to precede the Rule 5.
Long time listener, rare contributor. Based on absolutely no historical data or objective information I love the karma of this signing. Just like bringing back Griffey for year one of his farewell tour worked out like a dream, so to should Bedard’s 2nd (3rd) shot in Seattle. If nothing else the upside here is a midseason trade for prospects which would help heal the wound that is the Baltimore trade. I don’t see a down side.
I surprise myself in saying I kind of love this (admittedly minor) move. Who would have pegged this long-term relationship after Bedard’s first year in Seattle? Why not ride it out at the price? I totally agree with LMF.
Ah, Erik Bedard – the gift that keeps on taking…
I think it’s a good low risk move.
and if he pitches good the first half you can flip him for some prospects.
It’s quite a lofty assumption that he pitches at all.
I like all the moves Z has made so far.
A little surprised at this. The success rate for pitchers with multiple labrum surgeries is tiny. But I guess the M’s know more about his shoulder than anyone else.
Well, his labrum has had a whole year extra to heal and his latest surgery was minor. i think Bedard will suprise people.
At least the press conferences will be worth watching again.
If his body doesn’t hold up for more than five innings. Wonder if he could work out at mid relief or set up?
Assuming if he does make the opening day roster the contract is still incentive laden based on IP I don’t see how this can be anything but a good move.
