Olivo Signs With M’s, Capuano Does Not
The Mariners officially announced the Miguel Olivo signing today, only about a month after it was agreed to. Timeliness is apparently not next to Godliness. To make room on the 40 man roster, Anthony Varvaro was designated for assignment. They’ll trade him to someone who will take a shot on his velocity and hope he figures out how to throw strikes. He’s not a big loss.
In actual news, you can forget the Chris Capuano speculation, as he’s agreed to join the Mets on a one year deal. It’s not Safeco, but Citi Field is another pretty good pitcher’s park, and there’s no DH in the NL, so he still did okay for himself. The M’s will have to look elsewhere for a cheap back-end starting pitcher.

Too bad about Capuano, I was looking forward to him in camp.
I say they take a shot at Bonderman. Cheap and local boy who can build value with one year deal in Seattle and this will be the second year removed from surgery which is the best time to grab a guy like him.
Shame but I think we must have almost no $$ left so a guy like Bonderman may be still realistic. Personally I would be happy with Willy Aybar, Bonderman and perhaps another OFér or are we stuck with Bradley for that role?
Come on Spring Training. I’m even ready to watch Olivo take swings.
Silva/Bradley was a colossal 16.5 million/yr blunder by the owner-management. They are the ones who should take responsibility for this blunder, not the team or the fans. The owner should eat his blunder and add 16.5 million to this year’s payroll. Just saying…

According to Cots, Bradley/Silva are actually costing the M’s 18.8M this year… I agree ownership should chip in a few million extra to offset this deadweight. But it isn’t our money, and a 90M dollar payroll is still a respectable total.
Meanwhile…not that we weren’t sure it would happen, but Olivo?? He has been a (park-adjusted) disaster everywhere. Some of that money would have been helpful in signing a pitcher.
Henry
Still at the start of last versus this year:
C Johnson versus Olivo
2nd/3rd Lopez versus Ryan
1st Kotchman versus Smoak
DH Griffey versus Cust
I see a spark of improved offense in the changes
plus Gutierrez and Figgins should easily be able to have better offensive seasons.
Who knows maybe both Saunders and Bradley will find their strokes!!
Sure would be nice to add that one starting pitcher OR have Bedard finally give us some quality innings!!!
I wasn’t happy when they signed Olivo because I thought it meant they’d given up on Moore. But now I’m thinking it just means they’re expecting Moore to take longer than originally planned (assuming he does pan out) – if they’d given up on him, they’d probably have brought in a better catcher. With Olivo, they haven’t broken the bank on a guy who is hopefully going to be the backup in 2012.
There I fixed it.
I’m not saying that Olivo isn’t a bit better than Johnson, just that there must have been a better, or cheaper alternative.
