Cactus League Game 4, M’s at D’Backs

You might want to tune into this one (12:10 pm, 710 AM) because the Mariners are sending out Michael Pineda for a few innings against a Diamondbacks split squad that is headlined by Mariners footnote Aaron Heilman and has Willie Bloomquist leading off. One thing I really like about Pineda: he tries to soak up as much knowledge as he can, recently taking time out to watch Felix’s bullpen sessions to see what he might be able to pick up. If Pineda ever busts (knocking on wood as we speak), it won’t be for lack of effort on his part, but something else entirely.

“I want to watch him because I want to have a changeup like Felix, you know? And a slider, too,” said Pineda.

    We want that too, Michael.

Well, I missed it, but by judging by the box score, looks like he did pretty well. 2 perfect innings with 3/1 GO/FO and a strikeout.

How many pitches did he throw?

I just tuned in… when the heck did WFB sign with Arizona?

I guess I don’t pay enough attention to non-Mariners-related transactions.

Wake me up when there is an actual game broadcast.

That way I get to sleep until tomorrow.

He went two innings on twenty-two pitches? Nice. I approve.

Carlos Silva was wheeled into the clubhouse on a golf cart at the Cubs game this afternoon after an altercation with teammate, Aramis Ramirez. Not sure if that means he got clobbered or what. Apparently, he went off on Ramirez, who has a reputation as a good clubhouse, high character guy. I’m thinking the pendulum is swinging back in Seattle’s favor on that trade.

Reports of Pineda’s velocity were in the mid 90s, touching 97 or so.

Well… I was in favor of that trade, but I’m not sure one dugout fight on Silva’s part swings the trade back in Seattle’s favor. 😀

Jeff sullivan just wrote that silva’s presence on the Mariners a cooked years ago influenced Johan Santana to block a trade to Seattle. Thats the first I have heard of that…

I can handle Pineda’s two innings of facing six batters. What are his real prospects of landing a starting spot? Is he ready?

  15. groundzero55 on March 2nd, 2011 8:43 pm

Stuff-wise he is probably ready, at least as much so or more than the slew of #5-types we have, but in a season that is going to be more about evaluating young talent than trying to reach the postseason, that probably doesn’t matter. Not saying he doesn’t crack the rotation, as he very well may, but there’s also a very good chance the front office waits a few months on the promotion.
