Game 37, Mariners at Orioles

Happy Felix Day!

RF Ichiro
3B Figgins
1B Smoak
C Olivo
DH Cust
2B Kennedy
LF Peguero
SS Ryan
CF Saunders

P Felix

Peguero starts again with the right-handed pitcher on the mound. This probably makes sense considering that last year was the first in which Mike Wilson demonstrated no platoon splits. Prior to that, he had always been substantially better against left-handers, as one might expect. I’d be surprised if he didn’t start tommorow, though.

Ryan Langerhans cleared waivers and accepted his assignment to Tacoma earlier in the day. It’s still kind of surprising every time it happens.

You don’t get a good jump on a hit and run, and you don’t treat it like a steal. You make sure the pitcher goes to the plate on a hit and run, which kills your jump.

You make sure the pitcher goes to the plate on a steal as well as a hit and run. That’s why you don’t see runners go before a pitcher lifts their leg. Unless it’s a left handed pitcher, where they usually go on first movement.

We can totally blame Figgins for not getting in front of that groundball though.

I think it was just a bad jump by Ichiro. You don’t ever really see a hit and run with 2 outs for the reasons that Henry described. A hit and run is a “pseudo” steal situation, but you make sure the pitcher commits for certain before breaking. Ichiro had a straight steal and a bad jump. Not Figgins’ fault IMO

Jose Lopez would have caught that.

  4. SonOfZavaras on May 11th, 2011 6:12 pm

Figgins could go ahead and get the game-winning RBI/hit three nights in a row…

I STILL want him the (bleep) gone from this team.

Worthless, gutless half-can of crap, that glove you’re wearing is a waste of leather.

Why don’tcha say “Ole!” one more time for us?

  5. msfanmike on May 11th, 2011 6:14 pm

that glove you’re wearing is a waste of leather.

    Yep.

Oozer … if spelled out and not in its acronym form.

My God, Adam Jones owns the Mariners pitchers. He was batting, like, .255 before yesterday. Now he’s at .280.

  8. msfanmike on May 11th, 2011 6:19 pm

Pequeno has got some work to do, doesn’t he?

Speaking of work to do … Saunders is up now.

msfanmike, you going to get that fly swatter?

  20. GarForever on May 11th, 2011 6:36 pm

Are you a struggling American League team, adrift and unable to find your bearings? Mired in a funk seemingly without end?

Good news! The 2011 Seattle Mariners are on your schedule!

    Product features:
    * a journeyman catcher batting cleanup!
    * a compulsion to strand runners at 2nd and 3rd with less than two outs!
    * a habit of wasting quality starts through ill-timed defensive lapses!

What would you pay to have the Seattle Mariners turn around your season? $40? $50? Would you believe “absolutely nothing”?

(Testimonials by the White Sox and Orioles, followed by the obligatory 1-800 number…)

  21. Ibuprofen on May 11th, 2011 6:39 pm

Well Peguero seems to be hitting decent now, just right at people <_<

  22. Westside guy on May 11th, 2011 6:40 pm

    LOVE it, GarForever!

  23. Sports on a Schtick on May 11th, 2011 6:47 pm

Nice job by Pauley. Let’s go bats.

  24. poordispatcher on May 11th, 2011 6:49 pm

I like our ball girls better.

  25. Westside guy on May 11th, 2011 6:49 pm

Saunders, Mike hates you – give him what’s for.

  26. OffensivelyChallenged on May 11th, 2011 6:50 pm

    Screw these umps.

  27. Carson on May 11th, 2011 6:50 pm

I don’t understand how umpires get away with these shitty strikezones, and players can’t get upset about it.

Baseball is a form of entertainment. I’m not entertained by power hungry umpires who don’t call the game the way the rule book says they should.

  28. Carson on May 11th, 2011 6:50 pm

    WOW. What the hell.

  29. Westside guy on May 11th, 2011 6:50 pm

I guess I should’ve thought of a Canadian phrase instead.

  30. OffensivelyChallenged on May 11th, 2011 6:51 pm

I’d like to see Wedge get out there tomorrow if these umps keep up this bs.

  31. Ibuprofen on May 11th, 2011 6:52 pm

    ffs

Can we please get some form of umpire regulation enforced? This is getting ridiculous.

  32. GarForever on May 11th, 2011 6:52 pm

Thanks, Westside; now let’s just hope these guys make me look like a jackass for posting that…

  33. SonOfZavaras on May 11th, 2011 6:57 pm

Sigh. Another loss. Here’s hoping Vargas has got some stopper fluid in him tomorrow.

  34. msfanmike on May 11th, 2011 7:05 pm

msfanmike, you going to get that fly swatter?

LOL … As a matter of fact, I am. And, I am driving 200+ miles for the privilege.

  35. msfanmike on May 11th, 2011 7:09 pm

I guess I should’ve thought of a Canadian phrase instead.

    Hey, whatever works.

I would sure like to see Saunders hit well, but he can’t bank on an inner third fastball thigh-high when he is up at the plate. He hit a mistake pitch and he did not miss it. Next time up … no mistake – and nary a freakin swing. He isn’t good enough to let that many strikes go by. Granted, the 3rd one was a bit outside, but the umpire was kind of getting into a rhythm of calling strikes that he wasn’t going to swing at anyway … so what the heck – call one more (I guess). Saunders is becoming an enigma.

  36. msfanmike on May 11th, 2011 7:17 pm

My God, Adam Jones owns the Mariners pitchers. He was batting, like, .255 before yesterday. Now he’s at .280.

He must hope they never leave town.

Beat up by Jones, dominated by Tillman and reminded of Bavasi – at the same time as our Ace was having an off day.

    Not super.

Tomorrow will be a better day. It almost has to be!

  37. msfanmike on May 11th, 2011 7:20 pm

Thanks, Westside; now let’s just hope these guys make me look like a jackass for posting that…

I was really hoping you could have ended up looking like a jack-ass, Gar4.

    Maybe tomorrow.

    re Langerhans.

It is surprising each time. You’d think somebody like the Twins or Padres or, I dunno, Pirates would take a free outfielder who has a little pop.

  39. Auckland Ray on May 12th, 2011 7:56 am

You’d think somebody like the Twins or Padres or, I dunno, Pirates would take a free outfielder who has a little pop.

Dunno . . . maybe because the Pirates have a pretty good outfield already (including reserves) and don’t need Langerhans nearly as much as a team like the Mariners might.
