Felix Interview With FanGraphs

David Laurila, the newest member of the FanGraphs staff, recently conducted an interview with King Felix and Carl Willis. It’s worth checking out, if only for this line:

DL: Are strikeouts important?

FH: I don’t try to strike out people, but sometimes they swing and miss.

Don’t ever leave, Felix.

    I find it interesting that he thinks his fastball is his best pitch.

    I like that Felix says that his fastball is his best pitch, then later, his sinker is his best pitch…life of a Cy Young winner is you can’t decide how awesome your pitches are.

    Reading that interview was a treat.

    Thanks for the link, Dave. That was a great read. Even the Carl Willis part was very cool. He seems a bit amazed that Felix “long tosses” by throwing the ball the length of a football field (he’s basically throwing the ball from the right field foul pole to homeplate).

    We’re very fortunate to have such a rare talent. He comes across as having Gary Payton’s tenacity and confidence yet with Edgar Martinez’s personality and charm (as perceived from attending Fan Fest this year). And he loves Seattle (whether we win or not).

    AND then! He’s taken the time to take the NEXT great Mariner pitcher under his wing, in Michael Pineda.

    As many issues as the M’s roster still has, we shouldn’t lose sight of our extraordinary good luck when it comes to Felix Hernandez.

    Love that guy.

    Asking Felix which pitch he thinks is his best is like asking a mother which child she loves more.

    I love his description of his approach. It’s basically, “I ignore scouting reports because I know how good I am and am just going to throw what I want to throw, and no matter how good you are, you probably still won’t hit it.”

    When there’s a statue of Felix placed outside the NW entrance of Safeco 15 years from now that quote should be on the plaque.

    Judging from that quote, I think Felix is taking interview lessons from Ichiro! I just hope he never feels like punching himself.
