Game 43: Angels at Mariners
Day game after a night game means that Gutierrez gets a rest and Michael Saunders gets the unenviable task of facing Dan Haren.
The M’s trot out a lefty-heavy line-up, but Haren’s been impressive against lefties this year – he’s cut his walk rate against southpaws to below 5%, and his K rate is safely above 20%. This is a sample of only 164 plate appearances, but these stats stabilize quickly. Good luck, Peguero!
With the early start, it’s not surprising to see Chris Gimenez get the nod at catcher, but this will be the third straight Fister start that Gimenez catches. Gimenez has thrown out the same number of runners on the basepaths (3) as Miguel Olivo, in almost 240 fewer innings.
1: Ichiro
2: Figgins
3: Smoak
4: Cust
5: Kennedy
6: Rodriguez
7: Peguero
8: Gimenez
9: Saunders
SP: Fister

Thank you sun for that win!! Now go away.
Still want Hunter?
What is this “sun” and when did he join the Mariners?
On second thought, I’ll pass on Hunter.
To be fair though… Both him and Saunders really struggled the past 4 innings or so. Saunders hung in there just a wee bit better I guess.
Will he get pied?
Wow.
You can’t pinch run/hit for the DH without losing the DH for the rest of the game, meaning the pitchers have to hit.
Pinch hitter? No?
WHOA, Carlos!
The mighty angels are downed by the Seattle sun!!!
Remember Ichiro in Boston? We DESERVE THIS
The Sun was obviously feeling bad about the Ichiro Sun Double in Boston.
ROFL!!
^ Eh? Really? Couldn’t the pinch runner just stay in as the new pinch hitter?
Man, those Carlos Peguero postgame interviews are just brutal…
Jack Z was tired of the sun beating the M’s so he worked an under-the-table deal last week.
I think that was fitting in so many ways. The EXACT thing happened to us just last week.. AND Hunter robbed Peguero earlier in the game.
For once WE get the break.
You’re right djw. You don’t forfeit the DH just by pinch running a guy. If you pull a switch in which your DH plays a field position, then you forfeit it. So if you pinch ran with Wilson, then wanted Wilson to play LF, you’d lose the DH. Here’s an old USSM post to clarify matters.
The M’s famously lost the DH in Brian Holman’s near perfect game, which resulted in Holman batting in the late innings.
Woooooow.
Once again, I can’t wait to see Jeff Sullivan’s headline on Lookout Landing. That was a crazy ending. Wooooo!
It is kind of funny that the sun turned out to be a bigger problem for a southern-raised player on a team that plays in an open air stadium in southern California than it was for a Canadian kid on a team that plays in a roofed stadium in the gloomy NW.
So what, you play to win the game
My bad, I was confused on the rule.
That’s two nice starts in a row by Fister, right after two nice starts in a row by Vargas. Sustainable? Stay tuned, I guess.
It seemed like Ichiro lost a ball in the sun today too. I don’t remember who was batting, but the ball hit right at the base of the right field wall, and was eminently catchable.
I was at the game, left field bleachers. Had a direct line of sight to Hunter losing the ball, it was glorious.
