Yankees At Mariners, Game 50
Pineda vs Burnett, 7:10 pm.
Pineda has been unbelievably good so far, but tonight, I’d say he faces his first real test. The Yankees can hit, and their line-up is full of left-handed thumpers. Can he continue to pound first pitch fastballs over the plate against a bunch of good hitters? How will he avoid falling behind patient hitters who might not chase his breaking ball?
If PIneda dominates the Yankees tonight, it will be his coming out party, and you can expect him to get plenty of attention next week if he overcomes the test. It should be an interesting night.
Ichiro, RF
Rodriguez, 3B
Smoak, 1B
Cust, DH
Gutierrez, CF
Kennedy, 2B
Olivo, C
Peguero, LF
Ryan, SS

Enjoy yourself, while we’re still in the pink
YAY!!!
Great game tonight, and tomorrow we get to see King Felix have his annual Yankee feast.
Okay, so we’re rebuilding right? We’re still rebuilding…
So, how ’bout Olivo to San Francisco for Buster Posey… Jiminez and Bard can handle things the rest of this year?
THAT would be some scheming, right there!
(Happy .500 everybody– that was one helluva win tonight… Felt good to beat the might Yankees with vintage small ball… Has to drive them frickin’ nuts!)
The Yankees lose thanks in part to a bonehead pick-off play.
Anti-Yankee Schadenfreude is always sweet.
Who was trying to say a walk is as good as a hit?
2011 Seattle Mariners:
Wins: 25
Losses: 25
Home: 12-12
Away: 13-13
Run Scored: 180
Runs Allowed: 186
What does this mediocrity equal? .5 games back in the AL West.. 🙂
Only thing is, none of the hits were for runs…
So tonight we effectively didn’t score with walks, and didn’t score with hits…
M’s proved us all wrong.
All the runs/rbi’s came on putouts/fielder’s choices.
2 of the runs were set up by Ryan’s leadoff single and Ichiro’s double.
Tonight’s word cloud tells us that we talk about Figgins a lot, even when he isn’t playing.
But it came at the price of the Yankees, making it taste twice as sweet.
Two of the runs were set up by Peguero’s walk, too. A bit of a miracle there.
Still a push.
MrZ beat me to it.
Ha.
Apparently you’re arguing if those guys had walked on they wouldn’t have scored.
.500!
If they both walked, instead of leadoff single then a double, then one of the fielders choice results in a double play. Next ground out results in 3rd out of inning. NO runs scored.
Guys can we just leave it at both walks and hits are good things? <_<
I won’t argue the double; but in that sequence the single could’ve been a walk with the exact same result.
It’s always about context. Given the problems Ayala was having, I think it’s arguable that – again, in that context – we could’ve walked more runs in and made fewer outs, since he was having trouble finding the strike zone (Smoak’s AB against him notwithstanding).
I don’t think I’ve said otherwise. But I’ll leave it. 😀
I’m gonna go on the record as saying BOTH hits and walks are important to a team’s success…
But I’m a bigger fan of fielder’s choices, if they lead to 4 runs when the Yankees only score 3.
Go M’s!
It would be nice to be in first place in June for a week or two, just to say we did it and start getting some fans in the seats. But I don’t think it would be good to stay there. This team still isn’t close. Even if Ackley is the real deal, they are another 2 players away. They have to fix two of either catcher, 3rd, or LF to be a legitimate contender. And of course they need to re-sign Bedard for next year. He’s going to end up getting about 6m this season if he stays healthy. Perhaps if they guarantee that for the next 2 years, and then throw in more incentives that will get him to 10-12m if he keeps it up would be wonderful.
We need to keep Bedard on a year to year basis… and wait till the off-season to sign him. Too much history there
What is the linear weight? I think a walk is .9 times as good as a single, or something like that. So you’re technically correct–that isn’t quite as good as a hit–but de jure all wet.
Has anyone ever argued that a walk is as good as a double?
The correct comparison is not walk to hit; it’s walk to out.
All we need to do is copy Texas: Activate Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz – and we are set.
I do agree with you though … but it sure is a lot more fun and interesting to watch this team recently – than it was last year.
I like a lot of what I am seeing, no matter how it is sliced, dissected, analyzed or placed into the “context” box. Still some glaring weaknesses, but yeah … two real good productive players would solve a lot of problems. Easier said than done.
The Yankees were lucky that Pineda wasn’t quite on his game last night – and it still didn’t matter. They won’t be so lucky tonight. Felix is going to kick their ass while our offense figures out a way to “generate” 3-4 runs.
I don’t know how accurate that pitch tracker is on MLB.com but it sure seemed like the umpire had a tight strike zone so i wouldn’t say Pineda was off.
I think it is actually walk to BABIP. Not taking the risk of putting the ball in play to get on base its and advantage. But it is also offset by risk of taking a third strike.
