It’s like saying Carlos Silva at 4/$48M wasn’t such a bad deal for us. We could have been paying Jason Bay 4/$66M.
Ive been watching the away broadcasts on MLB.tv this year and I have to say, the Mariners announcers are some of the worst. Why? Because of the amount of time they actually are focused on the game and all its subtleties. They are usually talking about stuff that is peripheral, way cliche, or promotional. They are rarely focused on the pitch by bitch scenario. On each at-bat they are just all over the place, like a casual fan waiting for a hit or a run. TERRIBLE. They can talk about the guy at bat, who is is, where his holes are, what the pitcher is doing, what the situation is, but those are just details they dont care about it seems (or know about – SIMS). UGH. TERRIBLE. I know there are obviously worse announcers, but these guys, radio or tv, are pretty unlistenable if you are trying to watch the game. Try catching the Tigers broadcast from this series, or watch a Mets broadcast to hear how it’s done. No matter how mundane, those guys’ attentions are in the game.
As for seattlesonsofbaseball, homer announcers / cheerleaders are awful. God, listen to a Nationals game. Just horrendous. Yeah a little excitement is ok, but the problem with Sims is that he’s not really that focused on the little bits in the game. It’s like a blur or casual fan might call it.
How’s he trying to pitch him? Who’s up next? How did that last pitch set up this next one? What’s the adjustment being made?
God there is so much strategy in this game but you wouldn’t know it listening to a subpar announcer. Neihaus? OK, but generally overrated (try not to be sentimental- I used to listen to McCarver as a kid and to me he was great).
Dave, do a post on Ichiro. I’m skeptical that Ichiro needs to “change his game” and all that. Maybe, but he looked better this week. Also, I haven’t noticed him being slower on the bathpaths. People are calling for him to move away from infield hits, but if it’s his contact, not his baserunning, that makes zero sense. I could have missed something. Maybe he’s slowed down. His defense numbers are down. One day, he may have to “change his game,” but has that day come?
I thought this was funny. Intentional?
I don’t know about y’all, but I’m perusing Shannon Drayer’s blog…Ackley didn’t play in Tacoma last night and they SAY it’s fatigue. But who knows…it might make utter sense to the FO to call Ackley up on a homestand and against a reeling division rival.
I think Rick Rizzs could be a hall of fame broadcaster if he just called the play by play, but he doesn’t. He goes off on these jags about Mariner players how great they are etc etc etc, stuff we already know for the most part, and (amongst other things) leaves himself open to the player not doing what he said they would. It happens all the time, so and so hasn’t walked a guy in 24 innings he…(sound of umpire in distance crying “ball four!”).
Of course a good achievement should be noted by an announcer, but to go over and over it and over it, ad nauseum, it’s unlistenable. Dave Sims I like because he ain’t Rick Rizzs. Basically everybody else I like because they ain’t Rick Rizzs.
God, if I hear Rick Rizzs talk one more time about when he was “growing up on the south side of Chicago” and how the White Sox were his favorite team and Luis Aparicio, blah,blah, blah, etc., ad nauseum, I’m going to reach into the radio and grab his throat. Enough already!
At the begining of the season, if I told you the Mariners would be 1.5 games out of first in mid-June, what would you have said?
This is why we watch sports. 🙂
@SonOfZavaras – sorry I was a drinkin’ and a commentin’.
