Hernandez vs Nolasco, 7:10 pm.
Happy Felix Day.
National League baseball comes to Safeco, so the Mariners will wear their road grays tonight, there will be no DH, and the M’s will bat first. It will be different, but when the game ends 1-0, I’m guessing a lot of fans might hope that they go back to AL rules tomorrow.

Brendan Ryan rules…
(Ryan talking to reporters after the game, about the rundown he was in that got Kennedy to 3rd and Smoak to 2nd):
“I guess it lasted a minute and a half or so, ’cause that’s about how long it takes for Smoaky to get to second…”
Almost as good as Jack McKeon commenting the Marlins’ offensive woes:

SEATTLE — Changing venues couldn’t reverse the Marlins’ misfortunes in June.
Not much has worked in the month for Florida.
Felix Hernandez scattered two hits while striking out 10 in eighth innings, and Miguel Olivo homered and drove in three runs as the Mariners toppled the Marlins, 5-1, on Friday night in front of 15,279 at Safeco Field.
Franklin Gutierrez delivered a two-run single in the seventh, and Olivo, a former Florida catcher, provided some insurance with a two-run homer in the ninth off Mike Dunn.
Hernandez (8-6) and Brandon League combined on the two-hitter on a night the Marlins had three batters struck by pitches.
“You can’t very well win too many games with two hits,” McKeon said. “We had more hit batsmen than we had hits.”
(Sorry guys, that was just supposed to be the last line there… The “more hit batsmen than we had hits” bit. Cut and paste tripped me up, there.)
As much as I disliked Hultzen being picked…he was really nasty tonight in his short stint. He was hitting 94-95, and throwing some awesome offspeed stuff.
I doubt there are many reporters who are unhappy Jack is back in the majors.
Hultzen strikes out 8 in 3 innings including the 1st 6 he faced, he leaves after 3 sick. He also started the game sick, just could not finish it. Jack Z better get on the plane, we need him in a uni and figuring out how much mnore he will throw for the rest of the year soon. After we give him a butt load of money I think it is OK for him to take a couple weeks of vacation though. Then come back and be ready to work, we will need him in the lineup next year.
If he is ready to play, and Bedard decides he might want to do a 2 year contract because he wants a Cheese Head corner or something, do we sign him? If we do is it Fister or Vargas that goes? Who would we get the most for. If we had this 5 guys we could wait until we are positive Hultzen is ready and use one of them for trade bait. We would have a staff as good or better than the Phillies. Felix Pineda Hultzen Bedard Vargas/Fister. Or maybe a differnt ordeer we don’t want all lefties in a row. We do something with the LF and C spot. We decide who will be the DH, maybe Carp can do it and get better on the fly. Then we try and get Figgy to retire and we pay him 50% o his contract. Then we need a 3rd basemen. So Jack has 3 holes to fill, and maybe a 4th. in the offseason. Then we are a contender and have enough youth to carry this for many years to come. As the kids in the minors grow up we can replace some of the guys that are getting older and keep the youth movement going. Sorry if I missed much with spelling and such. I am a bit loopey with the pain killers I am on. I really can’t read the screen. Anyway is there anything I missed, besides hiring a hit man to snuff out out 3r bas wait foget that it is illegal, sorry,
re: Hultzen,
Despite ESPN guys saying he could be in the majors within a year, based on talent– he won’t be.
He had discussions with every team considering drafting him (including the Mariners) before the draft, informing them that he intends to finish college and get his degree.
He’s a junior but he’ll be able to finish after the fall semester. So don’t expect him playing any pro baseball till Spring 2012.
But MrZDevotee… that was probably before he was picked #2 overall. I’m not disagreeing in what you said or disbelieve his intentions on finishing school, but I wouldn’t be surprised that he signs and decides to finish school at another time. Or, can one sign, finish school, then play? Not sure the logistics on the whole thing. I doubt he expected to go #2, so finishing school seemed the logical plan. Now he’s got a chance at some serious money. Don’t know, we’ll see.
Also if he wants to finish school as long as he doesn’t have a ton of labs to finish he can work with teachers on timing. Most schools would have to do that with football players in the fall and he probably could get a schedule of online classes as well or work out something with Virginia and UW
I think so too. Besides, go to med school when you are 36-38 years old and your major league career is either winding down or is done. That way, everybody wins. Dr. Dan Doornink, anyone?
A baseball player who is bright enough to be able to think about going to med school … that’s the real story. At least it would have been based on the college I went to and the guys I played with. Some of those guys are probably still looking for that 25th year of College eligibility.
