Game 83, Padres at Mariners

Dustin Ackley’s still out with sore ribs, so we get Figginsed again. Also, Adam Kennedy gets the night off against a lefty, allowing Jack Wilson to get a rare start. Doug Fister takes the hill against lefty Cory Luebke, a reliever making a spot start.
Luebke came up through the SD system with great command and decent GB rates, and the move to the pen helped his K rate. The main reason he’s been fairly successful as a reliever (and in 4 previous starts between 2010-2011) is his HR/FB rate.
He doesn’t show much in the way of platoon splits, but the M’s went with a fairly standard line-up with Halman in LF instead of Carp/Peguero and Franklin Gutierrez moved up to 3rd. That’s not an awe-inspiring middle of the order, but I can’t say I’m unhappy with it. This is a very good defensive arrangement, and they’re playing the Padres.

1: Ichiro, RF
2: Ryan, SS
3: Gutierrez, CF
4: Smoak, 1B
5: Halman, LF
6: Cust, DH
7: Bard, C
8: Figgins, 3B
9: Wilson, 2B

    Hard-luck loss for Fister? Shocking.

You have to at least score a run to win a game. The 3 pitch walk probably prevented us from having to watch the Padres score a run in the 16th to win it 1-0 !

Am I the only one that hopes that Maybin gets thrown at tomorrow? I think we’re overdue for a scrumb.

So, Monday’s Seattle Times will read “punchless Seattle Mariners lose fight and game”?

After watching some of these strike outs, it seems like the strike zone tonight was HUGE!

Who is charting pitches tonight? If it’s Beavan (was he there; I listened to the game on the radio) he may have been too shy to speak up when they gave the walk after three balls? Is no one else in a dugout (the manager, for instance) charged with keeping track of the count?

    Poor Fister

Shit happens as far as bad calls go. The Mariners lack of hitting allowed that to help decide the game for them and screw Fister out of a win for a well pitched game.

I think tonight’s game explains a lot regarding the vitriol people direct towards Figgins. He’s not, by any means, the only one who’s not hitting – but we had such high hopes for him actually contributing to our offense, and the offensive black hole he’s actually been just makes him a lightning rod for our frustrations regarding this team’s ineptitude at the plate.

I’d rather have the nearly useless free-hacking dufus Jose Lopez than Figgins. THAT’S how much I despise his being on this team.

I don’t know if id go that far to want Jose Lopez back but atleast he could play 3rd Defensively. Im almost the point where they should try Liddi even though i don’t think he will succeed SO way to much but atleast hes young unlike Figgins who looks really old at the plate.

I got tickets to tonight’s game before I saw the lineup. I should have waited. Any lineup that includes Figgins, Wilson AND Guti and doesn’t include at least Ackley, Olivo, OR Kennedy just seems like a cruel joke to me. Figgy and Wilson are finished and while I’m still rooting for Guti, you can’t play him right now in addition to these other two and expect a competitive professional lineup.

On another subject, anyone else think Smoak has been the victim of some spectacularly bad calls this past week? I wonder if he is trying too hard to expand his strike zone in part because umps have been calling strikes way outside of the zone.

I was at tonight’s game, 15 rows behind home plate. Amazing how much more pitiful our offense appears up-close and in the flesh.

Hey, just back from the Rainiers game… what’d I miss?

They were no-hit, except for Greg Halman?
They lost on a 3-ball what??
    Guti’s OBP is now WHAT???

I think the offense can be summed up thusly: I’m much, much more confident seeing Halman at the plate than Gutierrez. I would have more confidence in any of the Rainiers 3B (they’ve got as many as 4 of them) than Figgins at this point. He’s not getting better, he desperately needs a change of scenery…and he’s arguably as good a hitter as Franklin Gutierrez right now.

Oh, and Breadbaker, Beavan was charting pitches tonight all right… in Tacoma.
Was slightly surprised to see him there, but hey, no official move’s been made, so he was still doing his duty for the Rainiers.

  16. Westside guy on July 2nd, 2011 11:52 pm

You notice people aren’t booing Guti… but his OPS is lower than Saunders was when he got demoted.

It seems pretty obvious – at least to me – that Guti’s stomach issues have not been solved. Wedge can talk about “stepping up” and “toughing it out” all he wants, but someone that’s sick or hurt simply can’t play as well as someone that’s feeling fine. These guys (not just Wedge – baseball people in general) have to get over this macho crap because, in the end, it hurts the team rather than helps it.

BTW, small sample size and platoon advantage notwithstanding, Halman’s current OPS is .951. He also plays good defense. The guy deserves the chance to show what he can do every day. I know he may very well crash and burn (I see his K/BB) but he is doing much better than any of the other young kids.

Oh, and apparently the Yankees also released Carlos Silva today.

he is doing much better than any of the other young kids.

No kidding. He’s done all he can.

No, i don’t think its the Umpires at all hes seeing alot more breaking stuff and he isn’t showing the ability to hit it and if he does he usally grounds out to somebody.

Oh, good grief – they just sent Carp down and kept Peguero up. Wedge’s fascination with Peggy is mind-boggling…

While im not impressed with Peguero either atleast he runs into HR’S what does Carp do that makes him worthy to keep down here?? Carp really hasn’t made a case for himself. Ackleys back in the lineup incase anyones wondering Woohoo.

Bases loaded with Smoak up 2 balls 2 strikes please don’t squander this opportunity.

    Re: That three-ball walk.

The Mariners are always reminding the fans to pay attention, to stay alert.
Evidently, the Mariners, themselves, don’t do that. They can miss stuff. And do.
