Cust DFA’d, Langerhans traded for cash considerations
Well, we’ve got a bit more information about how the M’s might use new designated hitter Wily Mo Pena.
The incumbent, Jack Cust, has been designated for assignment. This move allows Erik Bedard to retake his 25-man roster spot and pitch tonight in what’s widely seen as a trade showcase. Ryan Langerhans is suiting up for the Reno Aces tonight, the Diamondbacks AAA affiliate, meaning that the M’s essentially traded Langerhans (plus some cash) for Wily Mo Pena. With Saunders in CF, Peguero back in LF and a revolving cast of 1Bs, Langerhans didn’t really fit. He’s better right now than someone like Peguero or Tui, but that’s not important.
Pena will mostly likely join Tacoma tomorrow, though how long he stays in AAA is an open question. For now, the M’s may be back to using Adam Kennedy or Justin Smoak at DH. Shannon Drayer notes that the move also allows Blake Beavan to stay on the roster, which would help if the M’s decide to one of their starting pitchers before the trade deadline.
UPDATE:
The great Mike Curto mentions that by keeping Beavan on the roster, they avoid burning one of his options. He hasn’t used one because he was only added to the 40 man when they brought him up to Seattle.

Rumors are Boston’s in town to scout Bedard, and the M’s are in Pawtucket scouting there.
Frankly, that’s about the only way DFA’ing Cust makes sense. The M’s weren’t using all the pitchers they had before this move.
Bedard has repeatedly said he likes Seattle, and M’s brass has been quoted saying they like him. It would be nice if he were traded away for something more than a bag of seeds and then returned next year when we can use him better.
The Cust move was no surprise after Wily Mo was signed. I’d be surprised if Wily doesn’t get the call within a couple weeks.
It will be interesting to see if Fister ends up in Detroit. Would be funny if Beavan ended up being the one traded, after all the talk about Bedard, Vargas, and Fister!
Seems like you’re not going to get much from Boston unless New York is in play as well.
And the best part is that the M’s shelled Phil Hughes, which means that they’re all that more interested in SP.
Northeast paranoia may get us something for nothing. Loving it.

This basically sets up a WMP/Carp platoon at DH then?
Marc, you are doing a good job, but doesn’t the recent transaction (title) suggest that the Mariners essentially traded Langherhans for some cash and WMP. We got WMP for nothing a couple days ago … and we got rid of Langerhans for cash considerations, correct?
I liked having Langerhans available, though I guess he could be resigned this winter. Maybe it was a move for his benefit, to get him some playing time and exposure.
I suppose they will wait to see if they trade someone away before they try to sort out the 6 SP’s. IF they keep them all, Beavan could get the Jeff Gray role of gathering splinters for a few weeks. I would doubt they’d go to the 6-,man rotation, but they might arbitrarily shut someone down – is Pineda getting high on IP?

What have the Red Sox got to trade for Bedard? Ryan Lavarnway (C/DH, Pawtucket)? Will Middlebrooks (3B, Portland)? Brandon Jacobs (OF, Greenville)? There’s not that much that looks appetizing on the Pawtucket roster.
