Comments from our second try at this: Marc sounds great. I sound way better than last time, but not as great as Marc. We gotta figure out levels. I don’t think our sponsor got value for their support. Technical-wise: this over Skype, Hijack Studio capturing the feeds, Garage Band to edit the track from that, final thing saved at 32vbr. I gotta get better at editing.
Suggestions welcomed.

On the note of audio editing/production:
I’d highly recommend using Adobe Audition for Mac (paid) or Audacity (free, open-source) for editing. As for editing, I’d use dynamics processing – vocal limiter or something of that nature to even out the volumes. When saving, I’d recommend 48kbps mono VBR or CBR mp3, which will save you a lot of the streaming wooshing/garbled sounds.

I have my volume maxed and have trouble hearing sometimes. I know it’s hard not to drop one’s voice when talking about this team, but it would help us hearing-challenged people with mediocre laptops.

I think that in addition to celebrating the Sonics, the M’s should celebrate Super Bowl XL’s refereeing crew, and also the Great Seattle Fire of 1889.
After saving the raw recording as a .wav consider running it through Levelator. Or at least check Levelator out and see if it works for you.
I use Audacity and it’s perfectly fine for a PC. Most Mac podcasters seem to gravitate toward Garageband.
I’d recommend saving the final .mp3 in either 44.1 or 22.05 Sample Rate as most podcasts do. I believe this is because some media players have problems with kbps that are non-divisible by 11.
As for Bit Rate somewhere between 64 and 128 should be fine if you’re not gonna play a lot of music.
I really like these too. But the embedding is a bit wonky in Chrome.
To be fair, Chrome is a bit wonky, and that’s probably beyond our ability to affect change.

Every time I navigate to the USSM home page, the podcast starts playing. There are fragments of a window with a media player in the upper left corner of the home page, but none of the controls are usable. The audio plays automatically, starting at the beginning, every time I refresh the home page.
In IE 9.0.1 there is a media player under the “Second USSM Podcasty-Thingy” headline. It does not autoplay.
Same here Jim. I notice some kind of issue at least once per week with Chrome. I really like its speed, but it definitely has compatibility problems.
I use Chrome a lot too, and — it’s just not handling the embed the way it should. It’s even tagged not to auto-play in the embed.
Dunno.

An update. I tried this using Chrome on a different computer. One that happens to have the quicktime plugin enabled (i enabled it for this site), and the podcast behaves the same as it does in IE now.
Confirmed… Installing quicktime plugin (/gag) fixes this in Chrome…
I’ve really enjoyed both of these podcasts. A few minor non-technical suggestions/feedbacks:
– On the first podcast, one minor frustration I had in listening to the conversation were points where context or data would’ve helped bring things into focus. Like Miguel Olivo as terrible free-agent signing — I thought his WAR was respectable considering his contract, and wished stuff like that would’ve been mentioned for perspective. Likewise, briefly mentioning Jack Z free agent signings would’ve helped contextualize that part of the conversation.
– I’d give more free reign to impromptu lists, rankings, etc. I would’ve loved to hear an expansion of the top-GMs segment, for instance, with seat-of-pants rankings etc. Lists, retrospectives, rankings are all indulgent, sure, but also really entertaining.
– Speaking as someone who drives family and friends crazy by pausing erratically to find the right word in the middle of sentences, I noticed that you guys (I think more Marc) also have this tendency, which perhaps puts a minor crimp in the pacing. Just something to be aware of.
None of the above are complaints — I think it’s a terrific podcast. Many thanks.
