Blogads dropped
We’ve stopped running Blogads today. We apologize if you saw what Dave termed “the hooker ad” but yeah… the ads you run are part of the site, for better or worse, and if we can’t do them right, we won’t have them.
There’s an obvious question about where that line lies, and why this set us off when the ad for the female Brazillian jujitsu fighter didn’t (she was wearing a sportsbra!) or, much more commonly, the PETA one. In the first case, I don’t think we had even thought about it. Female athlete promotion, all for it. We might have talked if it were more… Go Daddy-ish.
The PETA thing, yeah, if you clicked through, you got a gross ad, but it’d be pretty hard not to tell what you were getting into. And if I’m honest, I think if I’d tried to figure out why we turned down crummy text link offers and online gambling ads but ran that one, I don’t know if I’d run them again.
Ideally, you’d want to run relevant ads to Mariner fans, but we never got to the point where we’d hire an ad sales person, and there’s no The Deck equivalent for baseball or sports fans. It’s possible to create ads that are good for the site, the reader, and the advertiser, and right now for most online publishers it’s a bind.
Anyway. Sorry. Thanks for being here.
I thought it was odd, but figured you’d guys catch it soon enough.
I’d rather see the “Buy the author a beer” links return anyhow.
I still think Whatifsports.com would do well to advertise HBD here.
I had to laugh a little at how ridiculous the ad was. Thanks for caring about this sort of thing–I know some websites that don’t.
I’m sorry I missed the party
I feel as though I’m not sufficiently outraged by this ad. Someone please describe it…in detail…so that I may attain the appropriate level of fury. Or other things.
Whew! What a relief! I was worried Blogads was an acronym for Mike Blowers’ gonads.
I never saw the ad but I echo Milendriel above. Thanks for caring enough to do something about it.
lol@shortbus
1. Damn, I missed an interesting ad.
2. “there’s no the deck available for baseball or sports fans” This might be a business idea for someone.
3. Agree with Carson on teh buy the authors a beer link.
I checked in this AM and did a double-take when I saw what amounted to a “are you female and looking for a sugar daddy?” ad. But, having had to deal with the occasional odd ad issue on a site I run, I completely understand how it can happen – and I don’t blame the site operators in the least.
It made me laugh, to be honest. I’m offended by the sort of people who placed the ad, but not by the fact it managed to get on here briefly.
Thanks for a great site!
The bigger news to me is a DMZ sighting. We miss your posts here, man!
Yes, DMZ’s absence is more offensive than any ad!
This is not the only place that struggles to police it’s own ads. search seattle weekly Mcginn http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2015626703_seattleweekly16m.html
Thanks for pulling the ad.
Aw I missed a hooker ad? This is the first time I have ever wished I hadn’t installed you, Adblock Plus! Joking aside, I appreciate that you guys care about what your fans think. Bravo!
As a father of two girls I appreciate your thoughtfulness.
Obviously there’s a fine line between prudishness and common sense discernment, but thank you for sacrificing revenue to keep this site free of classless ads.
It’s just one more reminder to me that I need to send money your way to keep this going.
I’m more offended that we couldn’t replace Pineda with Latos in the deal the Padres just struck.
What was the clickthrough rate?
Well, the ad was targeting women – so, given the testosterone-heavy readership of this site… pretty low. π
I completely understand how it can happen β and I donβt blame the site operators in the least.
Westy: You wouldn’t happen to be the Westside Gardener by any chance – would you?
I agree that DMZ-less USSM is to me a bigger deal than any ad, which I pretty much ignore anyway. I guess if an ad got sufficiently offensive, then yeah it’s smart to ditch it but I don’t know how big a deal it really is. I don’t even know if I saw the ad in question or not.
Haha, Mike, not sure I should admit it – but yeah, that’s me.
You left a couple clues over the years and I pieced it together. Ice Probe, Sumner, Technical Background, Manage your own website. At that point, it was easy. As such, I scouted you as being a 3+tool player with an overall OFP of 51.
