Dave on Kevin Calabro Show

I’ll be joining Kevin Calabro and Jim Moore on their afternoon shot at 710 ESPN at 3:30 to talk about Prince Fielder. Yup. More Prince Fielder talk. Feel the excitement.
The only thing more boring than talking about Fielder is talking about the other upgrades to the offense that the Mariners have made.
Excellent. Now there will be at least one person on that show that knows anything about baseball.
Dave,
I don’t know if your treatment was like my sister’s, but it made her sense of smell amazingly acute, so can you do me a favor and tell me if you smell alcohol on Calabro? He always sounds drunk on the air…
“The only thing more boring than talking about Fielder is talking about the other upgrades to the offense that the Mariners have made”
Best (and most accurate) line of the off-season, so far.
MrZD,
You may not know this, but KC is actually a tree sloth, who has a stomach that has an internal organism that produces ethanol.
So, yeah.
Good golly Miss Molly!
I miss the Calabro Sonics days.
“a stomach that has an internal organism that produces ethanol…”
Ding Ding Ding!
Now THERE’s a million dollar idea right there. Can you bottle it?
if Prince was going to sign and play in the great NW, he would have done it by now. Don’t play the Boras game.
The “if Prince was going to sign & play here, he would have done it by now” thing was actually a thing, he apparently doesn’t want to sign anywhere.
So yeah, I don’t buy that.
He’s just trying to negotiate a contract from a point of power for the first time in his life. Back off the expectations a bit… give him a little time.

Most accurate comment of this offseason.

Don’t usually listen to Calabro, but I tuned in yesterday knowing you’d be on, Dave. Boy, what a mental block he’s got on Fielder. Common sense just doesn’t seem enter the discussion with a lot of the local sports pundits and fans where Prince is concerned. Is baseball, both the game and building a team, that difficult to understand? Is it just the old “look at the bright, shiny thing” mentality? No wonder Scott Boras got into the huckster business.
Pilate-
I think the bigger issue is it’s commercial radio– emphasis on the commercials. Being smart isn’t necessarily the best way to get the most listeners on a sports radio show… BUT! Feeding into their gut reactions, and off the cuff expectations (ie “dingers! Get your dingers!”), gets you far in that world.
So yeah, that’s about par for the course. I long ago gave up on Salk, Huard and Calabro. They play their listeners like a slot machine– pull the lever, pull the lever, pull the lever… DING DING DING!!!
I’m sure they believe in what they’re doing, but that environment attracts a certain type of (typically) guys and (having worked at a radio station) it’s all a bit Pavlovian… They learn what makes the bell ring, and they ring the bell.
And unfortunately, learning new things and implementing change is not a good approach to their process.
I’m not sure what there’s left to talk about. We won’t get him and our ownership is cheap.
“I’m not sure what there’s left to talk about. We won’t get him and our ownership is cheap.”
Don’t forget to mention that the Mariners have the worst offense in baseball for two years running now and the offensive “upgrades” so far this offseason are John Jaso and Munenori Kawasaki.
What is the “young, impact bat” that Jerry Crasnick says the M’s are on “the verge of completing a trade for”? Anyone?
Greg Johns says he’s trying to confirm a Pineda for Montero rumor.
Pineda and Jose Campos for Jesus Montero and Hector Noesi…
“Being smart isn’t necessarily the best way to get the most listeners on a sports radio show…”
And spelling things right is not the best way to get the most tips from superior-feeling Westerners in Asian restaurants. That’s why you often read on the menu things like “Egg Foo Young” and “Special On Tray .”
And speaking of Asia, does the fact that the MARINERS open the season in Japan have the weight of a “home-town discount” in the eyes of PRINCE FIELDER?
Maybe Mr. YAMAUCHI will make a “one-time-only” contribution so PRINCE can wow the crowds that his daddy wowed.
710 is reporting the trade, too. Must have a lot of faith in the arms within the pipeline to trade pineda, but we just picked up a real nice looking young hitter. Hopefully he can catch a lttle too. But his bat is the tool. Nobody can find much fault with this move at this time
Montero for Pineda
Wow. Equal parts excited and disappointed. Hope Montero is the real deal.
(Meanwhile- via USA Today: “The Texas Rangers are having a face-to-face meeting Friday afternoon with free-agent slugger Prince Fielder at a Dallas-area hotel”)
The current M’s management has to know that if this deal doesn’t work out, they’ll be handed their pink slips by ownership. Brave – and to my mind, eminently defensible – trade by Jack Z.
Sorry, refuse to believe a non-catching catching prospect was the best we could do for Pineda…I’m disgusted. Will enjoy giving Pineda 12 Ks every time we face him for the next 10 years or so…I’ll be rooting for him, at least. Montero better be 35/100 for at least 8 years. THIS IS JUST GREAT!!!
If Z believes suitable replacements exist in the farm system, I’ll trust him. Montero is certainly an exciting addition to the M’s, in any case.
The M’s organization is light on power, heavy on young pitching. This is a very intriguing deal.
I also suspect this means we’re not getting Fielder, and we are signing another P.
On second thought on this– if we’re not gonna get Prince Fielder, one of the only guys currently at the top of the prospects list who pencils in as “the next” Pujols, Fielder, A-Gon… IS Jesus Montero…
And a HELLUVA lot cheaper…
This could be genius in the scheme of a young, emerging team.

Hmmm… NOT awful.
